Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During the month of July, 1983, the Center for Archaeological Research conducted a fourth season of excavations at Rancho de las Cabras (41 WN30) near Floresville, Texas. Eleven excavation units were completed in the east part of the compound. Details of the construction of the south wall of Room 3 and the southeast portion of the compound wall were recorded. A trench for a palisade-type fence was located and followed out in the vicinity of the original northeast wall section. The fence was probably constructed for use in small livestock raising during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Additionally, …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio contracted with the city of Boerne, Texas, to conduct a pedestrian survey with limited shovel and backhoe testing of 103 acres of raw land planned for development as a city park in south Kendall County. The purpose of the survey was to identify archaeological sites visible on the surface and areas with potential for buried sites. Seven prehistoric sites were found and recorded. A plan of avoidance was recommended for all sites; however, the proposed construction plan could not be altered to accommodate both the needs …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Site 41DW269 was tested by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) archeologists in July of 1997. The investigations were conducted in the right-of-way of a proposed bridge replacement project on DeWitt County Road 122 at its crossing of Clear Creek. The investigations at Site 41DW269 consisted of mechanical trenching for archeological prospection and stratigraphic evaluation of the site, and the manual excavation of two 1 x 1 m test units and two shovel tests.
Site 41DW269 is a multi-component terrace site with cultural deposits ranging in age from the Early Archaic through the Late Archaic. Two discrete alluvial fills, both containing …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Study of the archeology of the Wilson-Leonard site has opened broad new vistas for the reexamination and improved interpretation of regional prehistory. Beyond that, it is of national importance in terms of both data and interpretation (for example, on the Paleoindian era) and the concepts used in its excavation and analysis. It is unique in other ways. In most cases, deep, stratified, multicomponent sites of this integrity are rarely excavated (in Texas, at least) more than once and the potential for long-term research is not fully met. As the reader will learn, Wilson-Leonard was first excavated on a large scale …

“Renew my will from day to day.
Blend it with thine, and take away
all that new makes it hard to say
Thy will be done.”
December 17, 1863
Susanna Gordon Waddell transcribed the above passage in her diary to reflect her pervading belief and conviction: a resignation to God’s will. She does not indicate the author of the verse, and it so aptly describes the beliefs expressed in her diary she may have written it herself. Interestingly, this particular passage contains an inherent contradiction. The prayer asks God to renew my will while simultaneously asking that it be taken …

Henry Norris And The Boleyn Faction: 1528-1536, Jeff Lavender
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This work details primarily the last nine years of the life of Henry Norris, a British court figure during the reign of Henry VIII. His career in Tudor England developed from and through his role in the Privy Chamber, which was a department of court operating in the king’s private suite of rooms. Norris was the most prestigious of the chamber groomsmen who took care of the king’s daily needs and personal care. As chief groomsman or Groom of the Stool, Norris also played a significant part in the distribution of offices through patronage and through his influence with the …

In The Fullness Of Time: The Literature Of Denise Giardina, Cathy Pleska
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Appalachia can lay claim to many authors who have written works worthy of critical analysis and scholarly research, as the literature they have produced warrants consideration. This consideration, however, is often not forthcoming, and it is the situation concerning West Virginia author Denise Giardina. To date there has been no definitive, full-length study on her and her literature. As an author of considerable talent, who by any measure has published literature of significant quality, she deserves serious scholarly study, not just as an author of regional literature, but also as a contemporary author of the late twentieth century.
The purpose …

eBooks
"Established in 1968 to improve conditions in the barrio of East Los Angeles, the East Los Angeles Community Union has had a pronounced impact on the area, providing social services, helping increase political representation, and, most notably, promoting economic development, particularly through extensive real estate dealings. The history of TELACU is especially significant because it has provided a model for community development in other Mexican-American neighborhoods throughout the Southwest (including Oakland, California; San Antonio, Texas; Embudo, New Mexico; and Phoenix, Arizona).
TELACU and other ethnic community development corporations also offer a successfully tested general model of cooperative economic development for …

The History Of Louisa Barnes Pratt, George Ellsworth
All USU Press Publications
In her memoir, and 1870s revision of her journal and diary, Louisa Barnes Pratt tells of childhood in Massachusetts and Canada during the War of 1812, and independent career as a teacher and seamstress in New England, and her marriage to the Boston seaman Addison Pratt.
Converting to the LDS Church, the Pratts moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, from where Brigham Young sent Addison on the first of the long missions to the Society Islands that would leave Louisa on her own. As a sole available parent, she hauled her children west to Winter Quarters, to Utah in 1848, to California, …

The Bridge
The Danes have always expressed their joys by having
festivals. Fastelavns (Fest before Lent) is celebrated on
Shrove Tuesday . The Fifth of June, a traditional celebration,
remembers the day Denmark got its first constitution and
became a democracy. America's patriotism and freedom are
celebrated on the Fourth of July. The bounties of agriculture
are celebrated with the annual Harvest Festival. Christmas is
celebrated not only in the majesty and solemnity of a candlelight
church service but by dancing around a huge tree when
the children also recieve bags of candy, apples and nuts,
and gifts.
