Vormärz Of Germany And The Critique Of Heinrich Heine, Andrew Dean Henley Dec 1997

Vormärz Of Germany And The Critique Of Heinrich Heine, Andrew Dean Henley

Dissertations and Theses

The conclusion of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars marked the beginning of the modem world. In western Europe new ideals about the position of the individual and the future of society flourished in the early nineteenth century--prior to the revolutions of 1848. However, the forward move into the modem world was stymied in the multitude of states which composed Germany after 1815. Due to a combination of factors- political repression, conservative/romantic trends, social lethargy, and liberal immaturity--German society in the period 1815-1848--the Vormärz (pre-March 1848) clung to traditional ways. The most famous German writer of this period, Heinrich …

The Rest Of The Kingdom On The Mississippi: Mormon Settlement Patterns In Illinois 1838-1846, R Philip Reynolds Dec 1997

The Rest Of The Kingdom On The Mississippi: Mormon Settlement Patterns In Illinois 1838-1846, R Philip Reynolds

Librarian and Staff Presentations

Mormon settlement outside of Nauvoo, Illinois is one of the most neglected topics in Mormon history. Most discussion concerning Mormons between 1839 and 1846 is limited to Nauvoo although, as one researcher put it: "Mormon contact in Illinois was infinitely larger."1 After further investigation these settlements emerge as being far more important to Mormon history and the city of Nauvoo than this neglect suggests.

Thomas Jefferson's Support Of The Separation Of Church And State, Travis J. Rose Dec 1997

Thomas Jefferson's Support Of The Separation Of Church And State, Travis J. Rose

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

This study sought to determine the influences on Thomas Jefferson's support of the separation of church and state. Jefferson's " A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom" (1779), which was enacted into law as the Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom (1786), and his personal letters illuminate Jefferson's position on the separation of church and state. First, Jefferson believed in the sanctity of individual conscience, which the state-supported church in his native Virginia did not comfortably allow. Non-Anglicans in colonial Virginia (1607-1776) were not able to hold civil or military offices, nor could they be admitted to its universities, or join municipal …

The Wilsonian Dilemma, Mark Hall Dec 1997

The Wilsonian Dilemma, Mark Hall

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

This essay explores James Wilson’s approach to the so-called “Madisonian Dilemma. ” I first explain how the tension between majority rule and minority rights was more extreme for Wilson than for most founders. I then show how his view of human nature and moral epistemology allowed him to resolve the dilemma. Although Wilson’s solution may be less realistic than Madison’s, it is still worthy of serious consideration because of its influence on the creation of America’s constitutional system.

Challenging Political Culture In Postwar Austria: Veterans' Associations, Identity, And The Problem Of Contemporary History, Matthew P. Berg Dec 1997

Challenging Political Culture In Postwar Austria: Veterans' Associations, Identity, And The Problem Of Contemporary History, Matthew P. Berg

History

This observation, registered by Marianne Enigl and Herbert Lackner, points to an incontestable and compelling feature of contemporary Austrian political culture: during the 1980s and 1990s, the first meaningful steps toward an Austrian Vergangenheitsbewältigung developed out of a discussion of Austrians' military service during the Nazi era and its highly problematic association with wartime atrocities and genocide. Exploration of this important theme had been avoided throughout the period of the Second Republic by a carefully cultivated expression of public memory. The inherent tension between the internationally sanctioned notion of Austrian victimization during the Nazi years and the pride of many …
