Welfare For Florida's Nba Franchises, Richard C. Crepeau May 1996

Welfare For Florida's Nba Franchises, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I picked up the newspaper last weekend and saw on the front page under the headline, "New Welfare Era Dawning," two related stories. The first was about welfare reform. Florida's welfare to-work bill was just passed by the State Legislature. The bill will require the 170,000 parents on Florida's welfare rolls to find jobs, and will limit, to four years, the time that anyone can receive medical benefits, subsidies for children, and other dependency-creating luxuries so generously supplied by the state over the years.

The Reception Theory Of Hans Robert Jauss: Theory And Application, Paul Hunter Rockhill May 1996

The Reception Theory Of Hans Robert Jauss: Theory And Application, Paul Hunter Rockhill

Dissertations and Theses

Hans Robert Jauss is a professor of literary criticism and romance philology at the University of Constance in Germany. Jauss co-founded the University of Constance and the Constance group of literary studies. Hans Robert Jauss's version of reception theory was introduced in the late 1960s, a period of social, political, and intellectual instability in West Germany. Jauss's reception theory focused on the reader rather than the author or text. The original reception of a text was compared to a later reception, revealing different literary receptions and their evolution. Jauss's Rezeptionsgeschichte (history of reception) illustrated the evolution of the reception of …

Oregon Territorial Governor John Pollard Gaines: A Whig Appointee In A Democratic Territory, Katherine Louise Huit May 1996

Oregon Territorial Governor John Pollard Gaines: A Whig Appointee In A Democratic Territory, Katherine Louise Huit

Dissertations and Theses

In 1846 negotiations between Great Britain and the United States resulted in the end of the Joint Occupancy Agreement and the Pacific Northwest became the property of the United States. Nineteenth Century Oregon represented a new beginning for many citizens of the United States and around the world. The settlers arriving in the Oregon Country consisted of a hardy, self reliant, breed; yet they sought the protection of the United States government from Native Americans living in the region and from Great Britain's Hudson's Bay Company. When Oregon became a territory, in 1848, the pioneers struggled to preserve their independence. …

Isaac Murphy: A Great Jockey And A Victim Of Segregation In Horse Racing, Richard C. Crepeau May 1996

Isaac Murphy: A Great Jockey And A Victim Of Segregation In Horse Racing, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Isaac Murphy is not a name commonly known in American Sport, and even among those who follow horse-racing it is not likely to evoke wide recognition. But on this day before the Kentucky Derby it might be worth recalling the career of Isaac Murphy because he was one of the greatest jockeys in the history of the event and one of the greatest jockeys in racing history. Murphy was one of many African-Americans who played a major role in horse-racing in the United States until early in the Twentieth Century when African-Americans were systematically removed from the sport.

Confederate Veterans At Rest: Archeological And Bioacheological Investigations At The Texas State Cemetery, Travis County, Texas, Helen Danzeiser Dockall, Douglas K. Boyd, Martha Doty Freeman, Rolando L. Garza, Kevin E. Stork, Karl W. Kibler, Joan E. Baker

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Since its inception in 1851, the Texas State Cemetery in Austin has risen in stature to become the state's premier burial place for state officials, historical figures, and prominent citizens. Extensive renovation work that began in 1995 necessitated an archeological study that included historic archival research, pedestrian survey, geomorphological assessment, mechanical testing in proposed construction zones, recording and investigation of historical features (including three unmarked graves) found in construction zones, and excavation and relocation of 57 graves of Confederate veterans and spouses. Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted these investigations between April and August of 1995. Archival research provides a concise …

Striking Resemblance: Kentucky, Tennessee, Black Codes And Readjustment, 1865-1866, Beverly Forehand May 1996

Striking Resemblance: Kentucky, Tennessee, Black Codes And Readjustment, 1865-1866, Beverly Forehand

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To date, the scholarship covering the Black Codes has centered on these laws' role as the predecessor of Jim Crow. Little study has been given to the laws as a whole--the one encompassing work being Theodore Wilson's Black Codes of the South. Other studies have examined the Black Codes' effect on specific states; however, no specific study has been done on the Black Codes of Kentucky and Tennessee nor has any study been made of these laws' relation to the antebellum Slave Code. This project therefore will represent an attempt to show that the Black Codes of Tennessee and Kentucky …

Sources For The History Of Medicine In Late Medieval England, Carole Rawcliffe May 1996

Sources For The History Of Medicine In Late Medieval England, Carole Rawcliffe

TEAMS Documents of Practice

The material contained here derives from a wide variety of printed and manuscript sources, chosen to give some idea of the rich diversity of evidence available to the historian of English medicine and its place in society during the fourteenth, fifteenth, and early sixteenth centuries. Latin and French have been translated into modern English, while vernacular texts have been slightly modified, and obsolete or difficult words explained. Middle English has otherwise been retained to give the past an authentic voice and to emphasize the similarities as well as the differences between the experience of modern readers and that of the …

The Princess Wenonah Legends, Monica Drealan Degrazia May 1996

The Princess Wenonah Legends, Monica Drealan Degrazia

Student Capstones, Theses, & Dissertations

This thesis explores the Princess Wenonah legend and its permutations. From 1805 to the present, the published versions of the legend-dependent on the imaginations, literary tastes, individual whims, and beliefs of their authors-vary in detail and purpose. The more than thirty versions of the legend share some common denominators, but their variations add color to local history and reflect some of the important cultural changes that have occurred over the course of almost two centuries.

The Life Of Mariano Payeras: A Study In Church/State Relations, Douglas Anthony Cutter May 1996

The Life Of Mariano Payeras: A Study In Church/State Relations, Douglas Anthony Cutter

Theses

To understand the role of Mariano Payeras as Father President of the California Franciscan Missions, it is necessary to place the historiography of the mission in its perspective. Literature abounds regarding California's Franciscan missionaries and their charges--the missions and Indian neophytes. Few historical arenas can claim such easily traceable roots as California and its mission period. In many ways the early Franciscans emerge as the creators of a new civilization, largely because the aborigines kept no written records and because centuries of cultural change, disease, persecution and censure have limited what anthropologists and historians can create of the native past.

Gregory Natural Bridge & La Gorce Arch: Escalante River Landscapes And History, Jared Randall Farmer May 1996

Gregory Natural Bridge & La Gorce Arch: Escalante River Landscapes And History, Jared Randall Farmer

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Among abundant natural splendor, the canyons of the lower Escalante River enclose immense arches and bridges. Secluded in a jungle of slickrock, these natural spans attracted minimal attention until mid-century. Not until 1940 was Gregory Natural Bridge officially-if not genuinely-discovered. The "discoverer " was Norman Nevills, one of the most prominent and most colorful early commercial river runners in the West. Like Glen Canyon, Nevills' staple run, much of the bygone wilderness of the lower Escalante River now lies beneath Lake Powell. Gregory Natural Bridge was submerged by the filling reservoir, easily the largest span lost that way. Its present …

The De Villers Book Of Hours, Kenneth R. Williams May 1996

The De Villers Book Of Hours, Kenneth R. Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Created in France during the late fifteenth century, the illuminations, text, and family genealogy (added by one of many owners) found in De Villers Book of Hours make it an excellent example among other French books of hours from this period. In addition to acting as a repository of the style and iconography of French fifteenth-century illumination, the book's rich decorative program and varied textual content provide a remarkable document of contemporary devotional piety.

This thesis provides the first detailed description and analysis of the De Villers Book of Hours. Following a description of books of hours in general, the …

"Old Flu's" Artillerymen In War And Peacetime, Matthew Glenn Hall May 1996

"Old Flu's" Artillerymen In War And Peacetime, Matthew Glenn Hall

Master's Theses

Using a unique approach to study the 218 members of Snead's Battery, a Civil War artillery unit from Fluvanna County, Virginia, this thesis draws upon material from a variety of public and private records to describe the lives of its members before, during, and after the Civil War. Included in a narrative for the first time, some of the findings provide new insights into the experiences of the soldiers. Through six chapters, their story is presented by addressing three questions: What was the background of the Artillerymen?, What did they experience during the war?, What happened to the surviving veterans …
