Friendship: An African-American Community On The Prarie Margin Of Northeast Texas, Melissa M. Green, Duane E. Peter, Donna K. Shepard

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The following report summarizes the findings of an intensive archival and oral history review, coupled with limited archeological investigations, of the small post-Reconstruction era African-American community of Friendship located on the Prairie Margin of Northeast Texas. The archival and oral history reviews concentrated on the community as a whole between the years of 1880 and 1945: its beginnings, its social and religious structures, its economic development, its interaction with other communities in the area, and ultimately, its demise. The archeological investigations were directed more toward individual sites or homesteads within the community. The results of these investigations have culminated into …

“The Muhlenberg County [Kentucky] Heritage” was published four times a year by the Muhlenberg County Genealogical Society in Greenville, Kentucky, from 1978 to 2001. The cover title sometimes appears as “The Heritage.” The publication’s purpose was to support the society and to publish information about the genealogy, culture, and history of Muhlenberg County. The Recovery Of The First History Of Alta California: Antonio María Osio’S La Historia De Alta California, Rose Marie Beebe, Robert M. Senkewicz

History

The transformation of Alta California was as sudden as it was unexpected. From a population of less than 15,000 gente de razón [literally, people with the capacity to reason, meaning people born into Christianity; that is, any non-Indian people] in the mid-1840s, it contained over 100,000 inhabitants in 1850 and almost a quarter of a million two years later. Swarming over the landscape, hostile to the system of land ownership and use that had developed over the previous half century, the newcomers, imbued with their longstanding belief in Anglo-Saxon superiority, went where they willed and took what they wanted.

A Final Visit To The Land Of My Birth Baselland, Switzerland June 1994, Ernest Albert Thurkauf

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Mother was exiled 30 years in America -- so I spent 30 days in Liestal, one for every year she was isolated and banished! My mind was constantly on such thoughts as I daily walked the streets of Liestal. Tired as I was, I never reached the point of exhaustion such as she did - - especially when she walked behind the harrows with a four-horse team [One Small Lifetime, page 79.] My 30 days for her 30 years was poor compensation for a devoted mother who almost died to bring me into the world! [One Small Lifetime, bottom of …

Entering The United States Excerpted From One Small Lifetime, Ernest Albert Thurkauf

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the autumn of 1923, father left for the States. Mother and the four children remained on the farm. Father had to get himself established somewhere. I (age sixteen) was now the man of the house. Mother and I learned to butcher a cow; we sold some young stock and raised pigs and chickens. We somehow made enough to exist. Winter was now coming on, and about every two weeks ma and I had to go to town through the ice and snow -- and occasionally blizzards.

A Pre-Negotiation Guide To The Conflict In Northern Ireland, Padraig O'Malley Jun 1996

A Pre-Negotiation Guide To The Conflict In Northern Ireland, Padraig O'Malley

McCormack Graduate School General Publications (active until 2013)

On September 1, 1994, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) declared a ceasefire.

The declaration was potentially one of the most significant developments in Irish history since Ireland was partitioned in 1920. It represented, or at the time it seemed to represent, an acknowledgement by the IRA and its political wing, Sinn Fein, that Ireland cannot be united by physical force, that the armed struggle of the last twenty five years to drive the British out of Northern Ireland has not worked, that the strategy of "the Long War," based on the premise that if the IRA persisted in its campaign …
