Three Peaces Of Empúries (1189-1220), Stephen P. Bensch
History Faculty Works

This Great And Sacred Trust: Robert R. Moton's Legacy At Tuskegee Institute, 1916-1930, David J. Paul '96
Honors Projects, History
Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, an African-American school of agriculture, teacher training and vocational trades in Tuskegee, Alabama, was at one point the world's most respected school of its kind. This superior reputation was the work of Booker T. Washington, a man who rose up from slavery to help establish the school in 1881 and served as its principal until he died in 1915. Known as "The Founder," Washington used the support of rich and influential whites to develop a major center of practical education; over time, he also created a massive web of patronage and power which he used …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
In 1954, Marshall College followed the national law that banned segregation in the school systems of the United States. The law included the integration of athletic programs. While only a small part of the process, athletic programs often presented integration on a more visible stage than the integration of classrooms.

Interview With Jane H. Adams - Oh 241, Jane H. Adams
Winthrop University Oral History Program
In her 1996 interview with Ron Chepesiuk, Jane Adams described her time as a 1960s radical. She covered various topics, including bohemians, socialism, beatniks, civil rights, women’s liberation and consciousness, the Vietnam War, counterculture, and World War II. Adams also discussed the Student Peace Union, SNCC and its factions, Progressive Labor, prairie populism, feminism, the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings, and other ‘60s activists. Adams also briefly discussed her current work with the indigenous people of Latin America and her work as a professor. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections Oral History Program.

All Student Scholarship
Women's roles were in flux during the late nineteenth centuury and early twentieth century. Faced with neurasthenia and other health problems, many upper and middle class women accepted the suggestions of doctors and social reformers that they take more exercise, usually in the form of calisthenics and bicycling. The quest for genuine experience in the increasingly artificial and overpopulated cities brought many male sports to Maine's untamed woods and, by 1890, women joined them in increasing numbers.
This study explores the attraction that the Maine wilderness held for upper and middle class Victorian women.

The Jameson Raid (1758) As A Focus For Historical Inquiry, Charles H. Glatfelter
Adams County History
Each year the Adams County Historical Society receives inquiries either in person or by mail from persons asking for information about a young woman who with the rest of her family was seized and carried off from their home in what is now Adams county during the French and Indian War. She was the only member of that family who was not slaughtered as the raiding party and its captives moved into the western part of Pennsylvania. The subsequent life of this woman among the Indians was deemed of sufficient historical importance that she was chosen to be among some …

Oberlin Perfectionism And Its Edwardsean Origins, Allen C. Guelzo
Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
An impression has very generally prevailed," wrote James Harris Fairchild toward the end of his twenty-three-year presidency of Oberlin College, "that the theological views unleashed at Oberlin College by the late Rev. Charles Grandison Finney & his Associates involves a considerable departure from the accepted orthodox faith." It was an impression that Fairchild believed to be inaccurate, and he would probably be horrified to discover a century later that the prevailing impression the "Oberlin Theology" has made on historians of the nineteenth-century United States continues to be one in which Oberlin stands for almost all the progressive and enthusiastic unorthodoxies …
Union Civilian Leaders, Allen C. Guelzo
Union Civilian Leaders, Allen C. Guelzo
Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications
The American Civil War was a war of civilians. The fact that 3 million or so of them happened to be in uniform was almost incidental, since the soldiers, sailors, and officers of both the Union and Confederate armies were mostly civilian volunteers who retained close contacts with their civilian social worlds, who brought 1f9Culent civilian attitudes into the ranks with them, and who fully expected to return to civilian life as soon as the shooting was over. By the same token, civilian communities in both North and South kept closely in touch with their volunteers all through the war, …

The Walter Prescott Webb Memorial Lectures - Archive
Once a year, the department of history of the University of Texas at Arlington invites several distinguished scholars to participate in the Walter Prescott Webb Memorial Lectures, an event that honors Texas' well-known historian of the West. Southern Writers and Their Worlds, the theme of the twenty-ninth annual lectures, may seem rather removed from the Great Plains of Texas that were so dear to Professor Webb. But, then, Texas belongs not just to the West; it also belongs to the South.... We dedicate this volume to Wendell Knox, historian and teacher, Texan and Southerner, who retired after thirty years of …

Black Women In Antebellum America: Active Agents In The Fight For Freedom, Sandra M. Grayson
Black Women In Antebellum America: Active Agents In The Fight For Freedom, Sandra M. Grayson
William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications
The most prominent images of Black women in antebellum America depicted in classes across the United States are of passive victims as opposed to active agents of change. The names and deeds of Black women like Frances E. W. Harper, Maria Stewart, Sarah Mapps Douglass, and Sarah Jane Giddings are not an integral part of American education. Further, most history books overlook Black women's roles in antebellum America — oversights which can be considered suppression through historical omission. In order to reflect a more accurate picture of American history, public and private school curriculums need to include texts by and …
