Prefatory Note, Leo Schelbert Jun 1995

Prefatory Note, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The first part of .this Review commemorates the founding of New Glarus one hundred and fifty years ago. The farewell address of Caspar Jenny (1812- 1860), a leading Glarnese citizen, speaks to us today as it did to the parting emigrants. The diary entry of Nildaus Durst (1797-1874), one of the two scouts who, after an extended journey through the Midwest, selected the land for the Glarnese emigrants, conveys some of the quiet excitement he felt during New Glarus' very first days. Jessica T. Skropanic, a New Glarnese at heart, offers a sober summary of the town's evolution and the …

New Glarus: Past Success And Future Challenges, Jessica T. Skropanic Jun 1995

New Glarus: Past Success And Future Challenges, Jessica T. Skropanic

Swiss American Historical Society Review

New Glarus had a good foundation for colonization. It had financial support from the sending society via the Emigration Society of Glarus. It was settled in a pleasant location with the resources necessary to gain a good start. Also, the surrounding communities were supportive of colonization. Many people from these communities were of German or Swiss origin and could speak the language fluently. This helped the newcomers to feel some connection with their new environment. The founders came in nuclear family units. This benefitted them in several ways. First, there was the emotional support family members gave to each other. …

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Laura R. Villiger' s study is an ambitious and largely successful attempt to reposition this Swiss-American writer in light of contemporary post-colonial literary theory. The ninth volume in a series of publications by the Swiss American Historical Society, Villiger's study analyzes Sandoz' discourse and situates it within its historical, historiographical, and literary contexts.

Book Review: Captain Wirz. Eine Chronik. Ein Dokumentarischer Roman., Leo Schelbert Jun 1995

Book Review: Captain Wirz. Eine Chronik. Ein Dokumentarischer Roman., Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This work, part novel, part chronicle, part historical reconstruction, pursues the thesis: "All involved with Andersonville were in the main pushed, manipulated, cheated" (189). This tale of misfortune has no heroes: Its central character is Henry Wirz, who for some months towards the end of his life was commander of Andersonville, one of the most notorious Confederate prisons for captured soldiers of the North.

Rescue As Imperative For The Preservation Of Integrity: A Study Of Gentile Rescuers During The Holocaust And Their Motivations, Lynn M. Osborn Jun 1995

Rescue As Imperative For The Preservation Of Integrity: A Study Of Gentile Rescuers During The Holocaust And Their Motivations, Lynn M. Osborn

Masters Theses

When Nazi policies dictated the gradual and continual reduction in the liberties and rights of those deemed undesirable, most did nothing. Most continued to do nothing when these policies were extended to include mass sterilization and extermination. In spite of this, there were a few who acted. They gave of their own meager resources of food, money, and space, to help those who needed it. They risked their very lives as well as the lives of their loved ones to protect and save fellow human beings from the Nazi reign of terror.

Research into rescuers and their motivations have shown …

Religion And Conflict: The Case Of Northern Ireland, Padraig O'Malley Jun 1995

Religion And Conflict: The Case Of Northern Ireland, Padraig O'Malley

McCormack Graduate School General Publications (active until 2013)

Now that the peace process, however fragile and tenuous, has stayed the course, despite some serious obstacles and setbacks, and talks between the British government and Sinn Fein are taking place, it is a time to reflect on the nature of the divisions that have scarred our lives and psyches.

One of the most under-researched and least understood aspects of the conflict is the role religious differences play - or do not play. 1 While it is a common practice to label the two communities as "Catholics" and "Protestants," and to keep the tally-roll of the dead according to religious …

Farewell Address To The Glarnese Emigrants Bound For New Glarus, April 15, 1845, Casper Jenny Jun 1995

Farewell Address To The Glarnese Emigrants Bound For New Glarus, April 15, 1845, Casper Jenny

Swiss American Historical Society Review

What our forefathers, who now rest in God, tried about 130 years ago, namely to organi7.e an emigration of Glarnese people, has now after many efforts become a reality in the fifth decade of the nineteenth century. On the 16th of April 1845, 196 citizens are leaving the homeland that is so dear to all of us, to seek under the guidance of the Emigration Society, which was founded in the year 1844, a new fatherland across the Atlantic Ocean. In order to safeguard all the best interests of the emigrants, the committee has seen fit to appoint two men …
