Leonardo's Virtuvian Man: A Renaissance Microcosm, Charles Carman Jan 1995

Leonardo's Virtuvian Man: A Renaissance Microcosm, Charles Carman

Quidditas

Human nature is that nature which...elevated above all the works of God...enfolds intellectual and sensible nature...so that the ancients were right in calling it a microcosm, or a small world. Hence, human nature is that nature which, if it were elevated unto a union with Maximality, would be the fullness of all the perfections of each and every thing.

–Nicholas of Cusa

Mathematics From The Viewpoint Of Science In Context, Johan Deklerk

ACMS Journal 2004

This is the first of a series of papers presented over several years by deKlerk exploring the notion of how mathematics might be taught from a Christian perspective. Cowboy Wonderland, History, And Myth: 'It Ain't All That Different Than Real Life, William G. Simon, Louise Spence Jan 1995

Cowboy Wonderland, History, And Myth: 'It Ain't All That Different Than Real Life, William G. Simon, Louise Spence

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson was Robert Altman's bicentennial film. Released for the Fourth of July weekend in 1976, the film examines the western both as a national myth and as a commercial entertainment form; indeed, one might see the film's project as an expos? of the ideological functioning of the western, its white male hero, and the Native American in nearly 100 years of American popular culture.

Creating A Favorable Sentiment: Allensworth, California, Myra Frances Burton Jan 1995

Creating A Favorable Sentiment: Allensworth, California, Myra Frances Burton

Theses

As the nineteenth century drew to a close, most Americans expressed optimism for the future. In the decades following the Civil War, the United States emerged as a burgeoning industrial nation, a nation filled with opportunity and promise. However, not all Americans shared this optimism. For African-Americans, the future would be remarkably similar to the past. From 1865-1877, AfricanAmericans enjoyed a new status in society. The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments to the constitution conferred a measure of legal equality upon blacks, raising hopes of eventual social inclusion in American society. These hopes vanished in the wake of a new …

San Lucas: The History Of A California Cattle Town, Matthew James Gildersleeve Jan 1995

San Lucas: The History Of A California Cattle Town, Matthew James Gildersleeve

Theses

If one follows the Salinas River from its source in the mountains of Santa Barbara north to where it pours into the Monterey Bay, one comes across many settlements along its banks. Such a settlement is San Lucas. With a population of fewer than 500 and little industry the town has been left to wither away in sun baked South Monterey County. This had not always been the case, however, for San Lucas. Over one hundred years ago the settlement was paramount to Southern Monterey County. Once the hub of economic activity in this region, San Lucas boasted of many …

'Conformists' And 'Church Trimmers': The Liturgical Legacy Of Restoration Anglicanism, John D. Ramsbottom Jan 1995

'Conformists' And 'Church Trimmers': The Liturgical Legacy Of Restoration Anglicanism, John D. Ramsbottom

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The attention paid to religion in recent accounts of Restoration England has had the refreshing result of adding complexity to the traditionally one-dimensional image of the established Church in this period. No longer is "Anglicanism" seen as synonymous with the reactionary creed of country gentlemen.

Seeds Of Missiology In The German Erweckung (1815–1848), Wayne A. Detzler Jan 1995

Seeds Of Missiology In The German Erweckung (1815–1848), Wayne A. Detzler

History Faculty Publications

It is my contention that seeds of a primitive missiology emerged early in the nineteenth century in Germany. This was necessitated by the vitality of the religious awakening known as the Erweckung. At first this missionary impulse was sporadic, ecumenical and individualistic. Johannes Aargaard regarded the ecumenical period of missions on the continent of Europe as lasting from 1800 to 1830 and the period following that as characterized by confessional missionary activity. By the same token he considered the emphasis of continental missions in the early years (1800–1820) to be that of training for missions. After 1820 the emphasis shifted …

Preparations For The Forbes Expedition, 1758, In Adams County, With Particular Focus On The Reverend Thomas Barton, James P. Myers

Adams County History

In the year 1755, two events occurred which left their impress upon the history of what was to become Adams county. One was momentous, and its consequences, like concentric ripples produced by a stone hurled into a large body of water, continued to move and shape the history of Pennsylvania's frontier long afterwards. By comparison, the other was insignificant, the mere, almost undetectable slipping of a pebble into the rushing torrent of Time. Yet this second happening eventuated in ways that profoundly contributed to our understanding of Adams county's, and Pennsylvania's, history during the years 1755-59.

The lesser of these …

The Burden Of A Great Name: Robert M. La Follette, Jr., Nancy Unger Jan 1995

The Burden Of A Great Name: Robert M. La Follette, Jr., Nancy Unger

History

In 1925, following the death of the progressive giant Robert Marion La Follette, the people of Wisconsin elected the 30-year-old son who bore his name to complete his father's term in the United States Senate. Throughout his life, Robert La Follette, Jr. ' s sense· of self- natural interests, hobbies, ideas, and ambitions-never fully emerged and developed, so pressured was he to carry out his parents' will, especially his father's. Despite his initial reluctance to serve as his father's political successor, "Young Bob" went on to serve a total of 21 years in the Senate, three more than his famous …

Japan's 1986 Equal Employment Opportunity Law And The Changing Discourse On Gender, Barbara Molony Jan 1995

Japan's 1986 Equal Employment Opportunity Law And The Changing Discourse On Gender, Barbara Molony

History

She stands on a commuter train platform in a dressed-for- success business suit, her feet apart in a decidedly undemure pose, with a large briefcase resting at her side. She gulps the highpotency vitamin concoction marketed to legions of businessmen, hung over from the previous evening's obligatory night out with the boys. But for her skirt and high heels, she could be one of the boys (fig. 1). Her gestures, her dress, and her office destination are modeled on those, deeply embedded in Japanese imagination, of the male sarariman ("salaryman"), a catch-all designation for employed white-collar workers in private business …

Segregation To Exclusion: Japanese In The United States, 1906-1924, Penny Sakuma-Wolf Jan 1995

Segregation To Exclusion: Japanese In The United States, 1906-1924, Penny Sakuma-Wolf

Whittier Scholars Program

With racial prejudice and discrimination being common in the history of the United States, it is no surprise that Japanese immigrants were not welcomed into the country. A great amount of Japanese immigrants arrived in the U.S. in the 1890 as they filled up the labor shortage left by the Exclusion Act against the Chinese. Many of them stayed on the west coast and Hawaii. After the San Francisco earthquake and fire in 1906, Japanese students were segregated for the first time. The paper goes into great detail about how these events began and escalated. President Roosevelt had to get …
