Historic Preservation And The Civil Rights Movement Of The 1950'S And 1960'S: Identifying, Preserving, And Interpreting The Architecture Of Liberation, Robert Weyeneth
Faculty Publications
This report surveys the extent to which the civil rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's has been commemorated in the United States. It concludes that there are wide-ranging and imaginative efforts not only in the South but all over the counny that seek to identify, preserve, and interpret historic sites associated with the civil rights movement These efforts, however, have been hampered by the difficulties of commemorating chapters of history that are local, recellt, and controversial. These problems of selectivity are analyzed in order to facilitate incorporation of missing aspects of civil rights history into future heritage preservation projects. …

Gabriel Vacca Interview For The Faces Of The Holocaust Series, Gabriel Vacca, Renate Frydman
Emmanuel Ringelblum Collection of Oral History Memoirs of the Holocaust (MS-215)
Major Vacca was a fighter pilot whose squadron was stationed at a captured base in Weimar just before the end of the war. He was one of the first Americans to see Buchenwald when it was liberated, and he witnessed a famous event: hundreds of civilians from Weimar were rounded up and brought to see the death camp. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Gabe joined the army in 1941 and worked as an aircraft mechanic. He then went to flight school and was trained as a fighter pilot, sent to England, and then to France after the Normandy invasion. His 406th …

Bernard Mellman Interview For The Faces Of The Holocaust Series, Bernard Mellman, Renate Frydman
Emmanuel Ringelblum Collection of Oral History Memoirs of the Holocaust (MS-215)
Bernie Mellman served with the U.S. Army in Europe in 1945 and 1946. In April 1945 his battalion, the 542nd Field Artillery, assisted in the liberation of the concentration camp at Dachau. I can still see ... starved, emaciated inmates. . . . I remember seeing those ovens and smelling the stench of dead bodies." A few days later Bernie took part in the capture of …

It was just over a year ago that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman fired the first shot of the recently concluded hockey war. On January 12, 1994 Bettman notified the players that the owners opening proposal would have a salary structure with a limited amount of compensation. The players flatly rejected anything resembling a salary cap.
