Benjamin Franklin And Heinrich Zschokke, Donald H. Crosby Nov 1994

Benjamin Franklin And Heinrich Zschokke, Donald H. Crosby

Swiss American Historical Society Review

History has not seen fit to couple the names of Benjamin Franklin and Heinrich Zschokke. To attempt to do so at this 1ate date, then, may well suggest dilettantism or even charlatanry. What can be said in defense of what might seem to be a whimsical coupling, one which flies in the face of time-tested historical judgment? To proceed logically: one begins, as an American, with a study of colonial history before, during, and after the Revolution, where one very quickly encounters the towering figure of Benjamin Franklin. Then, as a student of Swiss history and culture, one turns to …

Helga Levy Interview For The Faces Of The Holocaust Series, Helga Levy, Renate Frydman Nov 1994

Helga Levy Interview For The Faces Of The Holocaust Series, Helga Levy, Renate Frydman

Emmanuel Ringelblum Collection of Oral History Memoirs of the Holocaust (MS-215)

A native of Berlin, Helga Levy witnessed first-hand the rise of Nazi power. She was in grade school when the first discriminatory laws were passed against Jews, and learned what it was like to have her identity as a German taken away. While still in her teens she was forced to work in a munitions factory, and was left to fend for herself when her parents were taken away by the Gestapo. She was one of several thousand Jews who survived the war in Berlin itself, using false identities and moving from one place to another to avoid the authorities. …

Delbert Cooper Interview For The Faces Of The Holocaust Series, Delbert Cooper, Renate Frydman

Emmanuel Ringelblum Collection of Oral History Memoirs of the Holocaust (MS-215)

Delbert Cooper was born in Dayton and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1941. As a soldier with the 71 st Infantry Division in 1945, he was among the first Americans to enter and liberate Gunzkirchen, a satellite of the notorious Mauthausen concentration camp. Today, his most vivid memory of that harrowing experience is the sickening smell of dead bodies -"the odor of evil," he calls it. After seeing the camp, the next day he wrote a detailed account to his wife Joan and this letter is now part of our exhibit. He also took part in the capture of …

A Swiss Phenomenon: Bauernmalerei (Peasant Painting), Walter Angst Nov 1994

A Swiss Phenomenon: Bauernmalerei (Peasant Painting), Walter Angst

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Ever since, some 50,000 years ago, the paleolithic Cro-Magnon aborigine of Altamira (a large cave near Santander in Northern Spain) painted magnificent pictures of wild animals on their cave walls, people of all kinds from many lands have used colorants to embellish the interiors of dwellings. The use of pigments mixed with various binders for decorating peoples' surroundings as an expression of the human desire for beauty has fluctuated throughout the centuries, but has never totally abated.

Fred Long Interview For The Faces Of The Holocaust Series, Fred Long, Renate Frydman Nov 1994

Fred Long Interview For The Faces Of The Holocaust Series, Fred Long, Renate Frydman

Emmanuel Ringelblum Collection of Oral History Memoirs of the Holocaust (MS-215)

Born on a farm in Harlan County, Kentucky, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. He was trained as a medical corpsman in England and participated in the Normandy invasion in June 1944. He was with Patton's 3rd Army as it moved across France and Belgium into Germany in 1944-45. Allied troops were not told of the existence of the concentration camps (although their superiors knew), and it was often a traumatic experience when young soldiers stumbled into them. As Fred said, even the horrors of the battlefield were not enough to prepare someone for his first sight of …

Donald Key Interview For The Faces Of The Holocaust Series, Donald Key, Renate Frydman

Emmanuel Ringelblum Collection of Oral History Memoirs of the Holocaust (MS-215)

Donald was born in Union City, Ohio but grew up and now lives in Union City, Indiana -the town is split by the state line. On graduating from high school in 1942, he got married and was soon drafted. Serving as a courier with the Third Army, he participated in the D-Day invasion and was present when the first American troops crossed the Rhine at Remagen in 1945. Although he carried thousands of messages and was always near the front lines, he says he had never heard about the concentration camps until his regiment liberated Buchenwald in April 1945. The …

Book Review: A Very Civil War: The Swiss Sonderbund War Of 1842., Sabine Jessner Nov 1994

Book Review: A Very Civil War: The Swiss Sonderbund War Of 1842., Sabine Jessner

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The Sonderbund war of 1847 was, as the author convincingly demonstrates, "a very civil war." Unlike the later North American sectional conflict, Switzerland's regional strife lasted but twenty-five days and cost fewer than a hundred lives. Yet these statistics belie the rancor that divided the opposing parties, the more than 150,000 men under arms on both sides, and the very imminent danger of international involvement.

The Tumult Of Amboise And The Importance Of Historical Memory In Sixteenth-Century France, Trevor Charles Schmitz-Thursam Nov 1994

The Tumult Of Amboise And The Importance Of Historical Memory In Sixteenth-Century France, Trevor Charles Schmitz-Thursam

Dissertations and Theses

Humanist legal scholarship was the catalyst to historical revolution that took place in sixteenth-century France. French philologists succeeded in demonstrating the cultural distinctiveness of France from a heretofore assumed classical heritage shared with ancient Rome. As a result, scholars sought to retrace the historical origins of France in the non-Roman Gauls and Franks. Their intensive study of the laws, customs and institutions that developed in France, as distinct from ancient Rome, transformed the understanding of the national past. Following the introduction of the principles of historical anachronism and cultural relativism, the sixteenth century witnessed a transformation of traditional perceptions of …

British Aristocratic Women And Their Role In Politics, 1760-1860, Nancy Ann Henderson Nov 1994

British Aristocratic Women And Their Role In Politics, 1760-1860, Nancy Ann Henderson

Dissertations and Theses

British aristocratic women exerted political influence and power during the century beginning with the accession of George III. They expressed their political power through the four roles of social patron, patronage distributor, political advisor, and political patron/electioneer. British aristocratic women were able, trained, and expected to play these roles. Politics could not have existed without these women. The source of their political influence was the close interconnection of politics and society. In this small, inter-connected society, women could and did influence politics. Political decisions, especially for the Whigs, were not made in the halls of government with which we are …
