South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman Jan 1994

South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this article I first offer a brief historical account of European white settlement, and ultimately political dominance, in southern Africa. Next, I outline how whites, and in particular Afrikaner-dominated National Party governments after 1948, achieved almost total subjugation of South Africa’s black majority through oppressive legislation and the calculated use of force. In that regard I enumerate some of the draconian laws enacted in the post-1948 apartheid state — laws that served as an impetus for black nationalism, anger, resistance, protest and, after 1960, armed struggle to achieve liberation from white oppression. Against this background, I examine salient factors …

Manufacturing Concern: Worthy And Unworthy Victims. Headline Coverage Of Male And Female Victims Of Violence In Canadian Daily Newspapers, 1989 To 1992, James William Boyce Jan 1994

Manufacturing Concern: Worthy And Unworthy Victims. Headline Coverage Of Male And Female Victims Of Violence In Canadian Daily Newspapers, 1989 To 1992, James William Boyce

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis examines the portrayal of male and female victims of violence in the headlines of seven Canadian daily newspapers between 1989 and 1992. Headlines were gathered from The Canadian Newspaper Index. Women's and men's victimization was found to receive different types and amounts of coverage. This coverage is inconsistent with known rates of violence against women and men, and I suggest three reasons for the disparities. I conclude by considering the possible consequences such coverage has for public perceptions and public policy.

Sentenced To Be Hanged: The Tragic Story Of A Danish Immigrant, Peter D. Thomsen Jan 1994

Sentenced To Be Hanged: The Tragic Story Of A Danish Immigrant, Peter D. Thomsen

The Bridge

Several years ago, Thorvald Hansen who was then in

charge of the Danish Immigrant Archives at Grand View

College, Des Moines, Iowa, asked if I would be interested in

writing the Peter Mathiasen story. I had previously told him

that in my childhood home I had heard bits and pieces of this

tale and that what I remembered most was how intensely it

was discussed by some of the immigrant people with whom

my parents associated. Little did I realize they were talking

about something that happened fifteen years before my

birth.

Recollections From Our Voyage To America, Soren Pedersen

The Bridge

We departed from Limskov in Norup Sogn May 6, 1862,

to visit my sister, my brother-in-law, and my mother on my

home farm, and were there a couple of days before we took

leave of the whole family never to see them again in this life.

It was both a serious and a sad time.

Mary Queen Of Scots: The Legend Continues, Shari A. Herlein Jan 1994

Mary Queen Of Scots: The Legend Continues, Shari A. Herlein

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The views expressed about the life of Mary Queen of Scots from the sixteenth century onwards by poets, dramatists, and historians have created a legend around her. These views will be compared and contrasted in this paper. The works selected for this paper reflect both ends of the spectrum: Mary as a political figure ("queen") or as a romantic figure ("woman"). The purposes of the first chapter are to introduce Mary Stuart and provide a historical context for specific episodes in her life. Mary's actions in England and Scotland led Edmund Spenser arranged Mary's crimes in allegorical form in order …

A Research Note: Race, Slavery, And The Ambiguity Of Corporate Consciousness, Herman L. Bennett

Publications and Research

In 1769, as he languished in Córdoba's prison, Diego Antonio Macute seethed. He was not alone. Fifteen of his compatriots shared his sentiments as they confronted their re-enslavement. Recent events painfully reminded them that racial consciousness had limits: their maroon allies, after all, had returned them to their former masters.

[Introduction To] From Civilization To Segregation: Social Ideals And Social Control In Southern Rhodesia, 1890-1934, Carol Summers

This study examines the social changes that took place in Southern Rhodesia after the arrival of the British South Africa Company in the 1890s. Summer’s work focuses on interactions among settlers, the officials of the British South America Company and the administration, missionaries, humanitarian groups in Britain, and the most vocal or noticeable groups of Africans. Through this period of military conquest and physical coercion, to the later attempts at segregationist social engineering, the ideals and justifications of Southern Rhodesians changed drastically.
