My Verie Good Lorde : The Influence Of Robert Dudley, Earl Of Leicester, Jonathan Perry Weston Jan 1994

My Verie Good Lorde : The Influence Of Robert Dudley, Earl Of Leicester, Jonathan Perry Weston

Master's Theses

The position of Robert Dudley as one of the most influential courtiers and statesmen during the reign of Elizabeth I originated with the affection that queen held for him. For this reason, historians have often discounted his role in Elizabethan politics and patronage. His contemporaries, however, recognized his unique status and frequently wrote him, requesting his assistance to obtain ecclesiastical and secular offices, assistance in purchasing land, and other favors. He responded successfully to many requests, and his influence with Elizabeth made him one of the most powerful nobles in England. This thesis explores the many requests addressed to Robert …

Suvla Bay : The Golden Opportunity Let Slip, Michael John Mortlock

Master's Theses

This thesis analyzes the reasons for the failure of the Suvla Bay landings of August 1915 during the Gallipoli Campaign of the Great War. These included an inefficient chain of command, and a lack of initiative amongst subordinate generals that allowed the waste of precious time. Over-cautiousness hampered the operations that followed the landings. This characterized the 9th Army Corps from its aging commander, General Stopford, down through to many of its brigadiers, and the innate gentility of General Hamilton, Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, made it difficult for him to assert himself. The chance was lost forever because …

Reading Between The Texts: Benjamin Thomas's 'Abraham Lincoln' And Stephen Oates's 'With Malice Toward None', Robert Bray

Scholarship

This essay, previously published in the 'Journal of Information Ethics' (1994) is the one that ignited the Stephen B. Oates plagiarism scandal; that story is fully told in the companion book, 'Dishonest Abe Scholarship.' 'Reading between the Texts' is an analysis of parallels between the two Lincoln biographies of the title, arguing that Oates's book was in parts written out of Thomas's, without acknowledgement of the former's work.

"Education For Service": Gender, Class, & Professionalism At The Boston Normal School, 1870-1920, Ann Froines

Women’s and Gender Studies Faculty Publication Series

"Education for Service," and “The Truth Shall Make You Free,” are two aphorisms engraved in granite over doorways of the Boston Normal School (BNS) buildings on Huntington Avenue in Boston. One can argue that the history of women in the teaching profession, its paradoxical and conflicted reality, are reflected in the complex and contradictory meanings of these two aphorisms. Young women students at BNS were moving toward greater freedom or autonomy by taking advantage of the educational opportunity available to them in this city-supported, tuition-free teacher training institution. At the same time, they were providing a crucial social service sanctioned …

Adventure And Authority In Gold Rush California: Mary Goemaere And The Foundation Of The Dominican Sisters Of San Rafael, M. Patricia Dougherty

History and Political Science| Faculty Presentations

In 1874, the Dominican priest Francis Sadoc Vilarrasa, aged 60, recorded the missionary activities of Dominicans in California over the previous twenty-four years. He concluded his chronicle: "This is a concise history of the [Dominican] Order in California from its beginnings to this day. The Order has progressed slowly up to now, but if it be recalled that only one Father [Sadoc Vilarrasa] was sent here in the beginning, . . . then it will seem wonderful that there are now found in California two houses of Brethren with 17 priests."1 Sadoc Vilarrasa's chronicle is only partially accurate because it …

Learned Law, Droit Savant, Gelehrtes Recht: The Tyranny Of A Concept, Kenneth Pennington

Scholarly Articles

I would like to make several points in this essay. First, the historians of national legal systems are still, by and large, balkanized. They study, explain, and trace the history of their legal systems with only a cursory nod in the direction of the Ius commune. Second, within the Ius commune, some historians still approach a topic as if its various parts can be studied in isolation. A Romanist will study a doctrine of Roman law as if canon and feudal law had only tangential influence on the development of the thought of the civilians.

0598: Marcia Myers Collection, 1895-1993, Marshall University Special Collections

Guides to Manuscript Collections

This collection primarily documents Marcia Myers’ research into female Presbyterian missionaries in Appalachia, particularly West Virginia. Significant in the collection is the correspondence of Helen Desbrow, stationed in Raleigh Co., West Virginia, to her family in New Jersey, regarding her work in the Home Mission between 1922 and 1935, central to Myers’ thesis on female Presbyterian missionaries in Appalachia submitted for her M.Div at Princeton University. Correspondence by Hugh J. May and Frances H. Pindar are directly in response to Myers’ request for information on the same topic, and the Helen Disbrow correspondence was gifted possibly from Disbrow herself. Other …

A New Day In The Old Dominion, James R. Sweeney Jan 1994

A New Day In The Old Dominion, James R. Sweeney

History Faculty Publications

The presidential campaign of 1964 became a significant turning point in Virginia politics as the 24th Amendment eliminated poll taxes, black political organizations organized voter registration drives, and suburbanites, newcomers, and recent college graduates were attracted to the Republican Party. Republican candidates had made strong showings in elections in 1962 and 1963, due in part to the policies of the Kennedy administration. Democratic Senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr., publicly opposed many of the fiscal and social policies of the Kennedy-Johnson administration, creating difficulty among Republicans in choosing someone to oppose him. His position also created a rift among pro- and …
