The Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century Sugar Industry In The Lafourche Country, John Alfred Heitmann
The Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century Sugar Industry In The Lafourche Country, John Alfred Heitmann
History Faculty Publications
The Lafourche Country's narrow highways, characteristic swamplands, and ever present tidal pools convey to the unfamiliar visitor the feeling of being in a strange and rather mysterious land far removed from modern technology and culture. Yet, this land's navigable waterways, favorable climate, and rich soil has long favored a productive sugar cane industry that has been neglected by scholars. A careful examination of the past reveals that the Lafourche Country sugar industry ranked as an equal in terms of innovation and productivity to that of the well-studied plantations along the Mississippi River and Bayou Teche. Indeed, both in the past …
Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger
Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger
History Faculty Publications
The category independent Christian colleges and universities is not a very large one. The reason for this is rather simple: as William Ringenberg has noted in the introduction to his helpful 1988 bibliography on such schools, "there are not many contemporary colleges and universities that are both continuing Christian in philosophical orientation and independent of denominational ties in governance." While this may change in the future, given the weakening of denominational loyalties among American Protestants, the fact remains that there are not too many independent Christian colleges.
For purposes of this essay I will I be looking at fourteen institutions. …
"Young Germans, Not Young Greeks And Romans": Art, Culture And Educational Reform In Wilhelmine Germany, Charles E. Mcclelland
"Young Germans, Not Young Greeks And Romans": Art, Culture And Educational Reform In Wilhelmine Germany, Charles E. Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
The demand to inculcate young Germans in a modern and German-nationalist spirit rather than the traditional reverence for classical antiquity emanated from no lesser person than Wilhelm II in 1890. But the previously little-examined backstage of reformed professional education and decision-making in lesser civil-service offices, private schools and impersonal art markets were real driving forces for change, including the embrace of what we call modernism.
The Professionalization Of Artists: A New Approach To The Social History Of Art, Mcclelland
The Professionalization Of Artists: A New Approach To The Social History Of Art, Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
Perhaps because of the somewhat inchoate and seemingly disorganized nature of the world of the arts, most students of modern social history and professions have steered clear of engagement with this fascinating crowd. Yet further acquaintance with the subject reveals that artists did in fact attempt to professionalize, and -- even if their efforts were not as successful as those of some others -- these efforts left a clear record of articulated demands and statements.
Civilizing The Civil Engineer: How A History Course Can Serve As A Curriculum Capstone, John Alfred Heitmann
Civilizing The Civil Engineer: How A History Course Can Serve As A Curriculum Capstone, John Alfred Heitmann
History Faculty Publications
Beginning in 1989 and then every other year thereafter, a unique course dealing specifically with the history of civil engineering has been taught to all civil engineering majors at the University of Dayton. What has evolved over time -- in response to student feedback, ongoing reform in the curriculum, and a maturing of faculty expertise -- is a course in the history of civilization that has as its major focus the discipline of civil engineering.
In reality, what happens in the classroom is a far broader learning experience than either the disciplines of history or civil engineering could provide standing …
Narrating The New South, Edward L. Ayers
Narrating The New South, Edward L. Ayers
History Faculty Publications
My book, The Promise of the New South, was intended as something of an experiment with narrative. While some reviewers thought the experiment worked well enough, others disagreed. In the eyes of such critics, my book was underdeveloped and noncommittal, refusing to say what it really meant and refusing to cast itself as an alternative to other interpretation. " Given these criticisms, I thought that perhaps a word of explanation would be useful, describing the intentions, if not necessarily the accomplishments, of Promise.

Seeds Of Missiology In The German Erweckung (1815–1848), Wayne A. Detzler
Seeds Of Missiology In The German Erweckung (1815–1848), Wayne A. Detzler
History Faculty Publications
It is my contention that seeds of a primitive missiology emerged early in the nineteenth century in Germany. This was necessitated by the vitality of the religious awakening known as the Erweckung. At first this missionary impulse was sporadic, ecumenical and individualistic. Johannes Aargaard regarded the ecumenical period of missions on the continent of Europe as lasting from 1800 to 1830 and the period following that as characterized by confessional missionary activity. By the same token he considered the emphasis of continental missions in the early years (1800–1820) to be that of training for missions. After 1820 the emphasis shifted …
Memory And The South, Edward L. Ayers
Memory And The South, Edward L. Ayers
History Faculty Publications
Our sudden interest in memory has something to do with the democratization of history, with our interest in how literally every one saw themselves. It has something to do too with our loss of faith in the coherence and objectivity of professional history. Memory, unlike older conceptions of "national character" or "American culture," tends to divide as much as unify.

Review Of The Most Promising Young Officer: A Life Of Ranald Slidell Mackenzie By Michael D. Pierce, Michael L. Tate
History Faculty Publications
Michael D. Pierce has produced a credible and nicely written interpretation of Ranald Mackenzie's life. By focusing on the frontier years and placing this officer's experiences within the broader context of military events, he provides the reader a good sense of time and place. Pierce also successfully utilizes the standard source materials and moves well beyond Robert G. Carter's somewhat unreliable On the Border with Mackenzie (1935). Unfortunately, the personal dimensions of Mackenzie's thoughts and deeds will never be fully known because he was an intensely private man who left little documentation about himself. Even his official reports tend to …
Creationism In Twentieth-Century America: The Antievolution Pamphlets Of William Bell Riley, William Vance Trollinger
Creationism In Twentieth-Century America: The Antievolution Pamphlets Of William Bell Riley, William Vance Trollinger
History Faculty Publications
It is difficult to overstate William Bell Riley's importance to the early fundamentalist movement; it is well-nigh impossible to exaggerate his prodigious energy. In the years between the world wars, when he was in his 60s and 70s and pastor of a church with thousands of members, Riley founded and directed the first interdenominational organization of fundamentalists, served as an active leader of the fundamentalist faction in the Northern Baptist Convention, edited a variety of fundamentalist periodicals, wrote innumerable books and articles and pamphlets (including, in the less-polemical vein, a forty-volume exposition of the entire Bible), presided over a fundamentalist …
The Problem Of Artists As Professionals In Germany, Mcclelland
The Problem Of Artists As Professionals In Germany, Mcclelland
History Faculty Publications
The social history of art, or more precisely, the social history of artists, has until fairly recently been an abused stepchild of both art history and "mainstream" history. Yet historians have at their disposal from the nineteenth century on increasingly rich material on both individual and collective artistic life. These sources have not been fully exploited.

Review Of The Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, 1877-1900 By Orlan J. Svingen, Michael L. Tate
History Faculty Publications
In the larger context of Plains Indian history, the Northern Cheyenne seem to drop from public consciousness following their military defeat in the campaigns of 1876-77 and their subsequent removal to an arid reservation in western Indian Territory. Mari Sandoz somewhat rescued these people from obscurity in her partially fictionalized Cheyenne Autumn (1953), which dramatized their mistreatment on the reservation, their heroic efforts to return to traditional homelands in Montana, and the bloody 1879 breakout from Ft. Robinson, Nebraska. Yet it is on that note of tragedy that their story seems to end, amid the battered bodies of fifty or …
Discovering The Chichimecas, Charlotte M. Gradie
Discovering The Chichimecas, Charlotte M. Gradie
History Faculty Publications
The European practice of conceptualizing their enemies so that they could dispose of them in ways that were not in accord with their own Christian principles is well documented. In the Americas, this began with Columbus's designation of certain Indians as man-eaters and was continued by those Spanish who also wished to enslave the natives or eliminate them altogether. The word “cannibal” was invented to describe such people, and the Spanish were legally free to treat cannibals in ways that were forbidden to them in their relations with other people. By the late fifteenth century the word cannibal had assumed …

A New Day In The Old Dominion, James R. Sweeney
History Faculty Publications
The presidential campaign of 1964 became a significant turning point in Virginia politics as the 24th Amendment eliminated poll taxes, black political organizations organized voter registration drives, and suburbanites, newcomers, and recent college graduates were attracted to the Republican Party. Republican candidates had made strong showings in elections in 1962 and 1963, due in part to the policies of the Kennedy administration. Democratic Senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr., publicly opposed many of the fiscal and social policies of the Kennedy-Johnson administration, creating difficulty among Republicans in choosing someone to oppose him. His position also created a rift among pro- and …

Review Of Myles Keogh: The Life And Legend Of An "Irish Dragoon" In The Seventh Cavalry, Michael L. Tate
History Faculty Publications
During the summer of 1990, the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum hosted a symposium of Custer scholars and buffs. Rather than devoting their exclusive attention to the subtleties of the legendary 1876 "Last Stand," these researchers examined the life of the second most recognized soldier to emerge from the fight at Little Big Horn-Captain Myles Keogh. The product of their labors has now been published as eighteen loosely integrated essays in this oversized and expensive book that comprises volume 9 in Upton's "Montana and the West Series." Because of its dimensions, its inclusion of more than sixty photographs, and its …
Memorias: A West Texas Life By Salvador Guerrero And Arnoldo De León (Review), Robert M. Salmon
Memorias: A West Texas Life By Salvador Guerrero And Arnoldo De León (Review), Robert M. Salmon
History Faculty Publications
Arnoldo de Leon, a Tejano historian, has added to the historiography of Chicano history in Texas through the publication of The Tejano Community, 1836-1900 (University of New Mexico Press, 1982) and They Called Them Greasers (University of Texas Press, 1983). While de Leon feels that this autobiography helps document the voice of the "so-called Mexican American Generation," it is merely the lightly edited memories of Salvador Guerrero, World War II veteran, civil servant, and West Texas community activist. De Leon, however, finds this slim volume an indispensable contribution makes it clear that his editorial services were primarily style, not substance.

The Elite And Popular Foundations Of German Catholicism In The Age Of Confessionalism: The Reichskirche., Marc R. Forster
The Elite And Popular Foundations Of German Catholicism In The Age Of Confessionalism: The Reichskirche., Marc R. Forster
History Faculty Publications
The political, institutional, and religious particularism of the German church reinforced the loyalty of the population, to local religious traditions. This gave German Catholicism a local emphasis and hindered the imposition of reformed Catholicism, which sought to homogenize, centralize, and internationalize the church. While early modern German Catholicism was certainly conservative, it was not rigidly traditional. Religious change occurred in these centuries and it came out of the interaction between the local population, local institutions like the chapters and monasteries, the parish clergy, and reforming churchmen.[70] The role of chapters and monasteries was not insignificant in this process.

The Spanish American Homeland: Four Centuries In New Mexico's Rio Arriba By Alvar W. Carlson (Review), Robert M. Salmon

This comprehensive examination of Spanish, Mexican, and United States land tenure systems in New Mexico's Rio Arriba is based on the discipline of geography Alvar Carlson undertakes his journey into land grant history in order to ex- amine cultural and environmental changes visible in the region after some 400 years of history. He finds that land grant history is certainly in need of revision as he focuses upon the incorporation of subsistence agriculture and land use pat- terns in Rio Arriba.
