Atlantic Republicanism In Nineteenth-Century Colombia: Spanish America’S Challenge To The Contours Of Atlantic History, James Sanders Jan 2009

Atlantic Republicanism In Nineteenth-Century Colombia: Spanish America’S Challenge To The Contours Of Atlantic History, James Sanders

History Faculty Publications

This article argues that the Age of Revolution and the abolition of slavery do not adequately mark the termination of the Atlantic world's political processes, at least concerning Latin America. Employing archival evidence from Colombia as a case study (as well as evidence from Mexico and Uruguay), the article explores how during the nineteenth century in Spain's former colonies, subalterns, especially popular liberals, and elites debated the meanings of nation, citizen, and democracy. These struggles over visions of republicanism and democracy that racked the region throughout most of the nineteenth century cannot be understood outside of an Atlantic context, nor …

Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú Jan 2009

Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú

History Faculty Publications

The article examines how adverse climatic conditions and high food prices influenced the opportunities of peasants in pre-industrial Mexico between 1730 and 1835. Particular attention is paid to data of soldier heights, global climate events, warm-season tree growth, and real food prices to determine how these factors may have affected urban and rural populations. Declines were seen in the general standard of living and average height, while the cost of food increased. It is argued that distribution and acquisition of food has an equal influence on biological well-being as the availability of food at any specific given time.

"It Was Still No South To Us": African American Civil Servants At The Fin De Siècle, Eric S. Yellin Jan 2009

"It Was Still No South To Us": African American Civil Servants At The Fin De Siècle, Eric S. Yellin

History Faculty Publications

If Washingtonians know anything about black civil servants of the early twentieth century, it is that they faced discrimination under President Woodrow Wilson. Beginning in 1913, Wilson’s Democratic administration dismantled a biracial, Republican-led coalition that had struggled since Reconstruction to make government offices places of racial egalitarianism. During Wilson's presidency, federal officials imposed "segregation" (actually exclusion), rearranged the political patronage system, and undercut black ambition. The Wilson administration's policies were a disaster for black civil servants, who responded with one of the first national civil rights campaigns in U.S. history. But to fully grapple with the meaning of federal segregation, …

An Outpouring Of ‘Faithful’ Words: Protestant Publishing In The United States, William Vance Trollinger Jan 2009

An Outpouring Of ‘Faithful’ Words: Protestant Publishing In The United States, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

In a period characterized by expanding markets, national consolidation, and social upheaval, print culture picked up momentum as the nineteenth century turned into the twentieth. Books, magazines, and newspapers were produced more quickly and more cheaply, reaching ever-increasing numbers of readers. Volume 4 of A History of the Book in America traces the complex, even contradictory consequences of these changes in the production, circulation, and use of print.

Contributors to this volume explain that although mass production encouraged consolidation and standardization, readers increasingly adapted print to serve their own purposes, allowing for increased diversity in the midst of concentration and …

Sister Katie: The Memory And Making Of A 1.5 Generation Working Class Transnational, Caroline Waldron Merithew Jan 2009

Sister Katie: The Memory And Making Of A 1.5 Generation Working Class Transnational, Caroline Waldron Merithew

History Faculty Publications

Identifying the theoretical and chronological fault lines that divide immigration and women’s history, I use memory and biography to argue that assimilation and transnationalism in the 1.5 and second generations were not oppositional. In this article, I tell the story of an Italian immigrant who moved to the United States as a young child and who became a self-proclaimed “left winger.” I cast Katie’s story less from her own words as from the recollections of others who remade and remembered her from the 1930s until 1960. I argue that a working-class transnational’s identity was one that could move through large …

Running The Ancient Ark By Steam: Catholic Publishing, 1880-1950, Una M. Cadegan Jan 2009

Running The Ancient Ark By Steam: Catholic Publishing, 1880-1950, Una M. Cadegan

History Faculty Publications

This essay highlights two aspects of Catholic culture related to books and reading between 1880 and 1940: the connection between.material objects and the printed word, and the role of authority in shaping both the institutional aspects and the content of Catholic publishing. It also emphasizes how, in their tumultuous but thriving print culture, U.S. Catholics adopted technically and organizationally advanced processes in the pursuit of religious and cultural goals that were, in the eyes of their contemporaries, perceived as largely modern.

Learned Professions And Jews In Modern Germany And Their Heritage For Israel, Charles E. Mcclelland Jan 2009

Learned Professions And Jews In Modern Germany And Their Heritage For Israel, Charles E. Mcclelland

History Faculty Publications

The crisis of German professional life under Hitler was especially fateful for German Jews. When postwar German professional life had to be rebuilt, one of the hardest tasks was to reconnect with the fundamental values of modern professional activity without the emigrated and murdered German Jews who had been so instrumental in sustaining those values. The shape of Israeli professional life can be traced in some as yet little-explored ways back to influences brought to bear by German and other Central and Eastern European émigrés whose professionalization models before migration to Eretz Yisrael had much to do with the German …

From Nationalization Of Islam To Privatization Of Nationalism: Islam And Turkish National Identity, Tamer Balci Jan 2009

From Nationalization Of Islam To Privatization Of Nationalism: Islam And Turkish National Identity, Tamer Balci

History Faculty Publications

This article traces the origins of various proposals to nationalize Islam in Turkey. The initial Turkish proposals failed because none of them had a feasible philosophical base to facilitate the co-existence of Islam and secularism. Aside from the previous studies on the nationalization of Islam, this article carries the topic to the Cold War by arguing that the Turkish-Islamic Synthesis was the last stage on the nationalization of Islam. Since TIS had no vision to alter the official ideology, Kemalism, and it claimed the compatibility of Islam, nationalism, secularism as well as Kemalism, it fulfilled the need of a national …

Why Brownsville Failed To Become ‘The Next Coral Gables’, Robin Robinson

History Faculty Publications

During the early 1920s, Brownsville and the greater Lower Rio Grande Valley region had an opportunity to expand their economic base from one focused solely on agriculture to one that embraced both agriculture and tourism. Despite the efforts of non-Texas boosters and businessmen, most South Texas residents remained unenthusiastic about the prospect of becoming the next Coral Gables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Breaking The Khaldunian Cycle? The Rise Of Sharifianism As The Basis For Political Legitimacy In Early Modern Morocco, Stephen Cory Sep 2008

Breaking The Khaldunian Cycle? The Rise Of Sharifianism As The Basis For Political Legitimacy In Early Modern Morocco, Stephen Cory

History Faculty Publications

This paper argues that the sharifian Sa'di and 'Alawi dynasties ended the Khaldunian Cycle within Morocco through their development of a political creed based upon sharifianism (the idea that Islamic leadership should be held by descendants of the Prophet Muhammad). Within the context of a growing European threat, the Sa'dis created a doctrine that was both new and distinctly Moroccan while alleging it held a universal application deriving from the time of the Prophet. Thus they institutionalised a sense of 'asabiyah in a way that preceding dynasties could not, which later enabled the 'Alawis to exceed Ibn Khaldun's predicted dynastic …

Historiography Of The Asia-Pacific War In Japan, Takashi Yoshida Jun 2008

Historiography Of The Asia-Pacific War In Japan, Takashi Yoshida

History Faculty Publications

Interpretations of Japan’s involvement in the Pacific War and its war crimes have changed over time, and corresponding changes in social and political contexts both within and outside Japan have influenced these evolving interpretations. Today the people of Japan are far from a consensus over the meaning of the Asia-Pacific War (1931-45), and disputes relating to such topics as the Nanjing Massacre, Japan’s colonial occupation of Korea and Taiwan, and the sexual enslavement of the so-called Comfort Women continue to haunt the national memory. However, the current divisions over the significance of the war did not always exist. To the …
