Reappraising The Battle Of Hong Kong: Preliminary Observations From A Spatial History Project, Chi Man Kwong

Canadian Military History

This article summarises the author’s recent experience of revisiting the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941 through a spatial history project based on a critical reading of primary sources from Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan. The spatial history approach allows the author to propose new observations about the operational and tactical dimensions of the battle, the experience of the Canadian forces, the performance of the Japanese forces and the reasons for the battle’s outcome, which was seemingly a foregone conclusion. This article also discusses some possible future research directions on the topic and outlines how these new …

The Night Of The Panthers: The Assault Of Kampfgruppe Meyer/Wünsche On Bretteville-L’Orgueilleuse, 8/9 June 1944, Arthur Gullachsen Aug 2021

The Night Of The Panthers: The Assault Of Kampfgruppe Meyer/Wünsche On Bretteville-L’Orgueilleuse, 8/9 June 1944, Arthur Gullachsen

Canadian Military History

This article provides historical insight into the failure of German armoured counterattacks in the immediate aftermath of the Normandy invasion. The failure of an armoured battlegroup of the 12. SS-Panzerdivision to take the village of Bretteville l’Orgueilleuse on the night of 8/9 June 1944 was not exclusively due to poor planning, lack of coordination and not enough infantry support. Though these factors were present in abundance, the main reason for failure was German confidence in mutated armoured tactics that were successfully used by the Waffen-SS on the Eastern Front. These rough tactics, though successful in the Ukraine in 1943, actually …

“A Calculated And Terrible Efficiency:” The Operation Veritable Fire Plan, February 1945, David Grebstad Aug 2021

“A Calculated And Terrible Efficiency:” The Operation Veritable Fire Plan, February 1945, David Grebstad

Canadian Military History

The First Canadian Army’s Operation Veritable, launched in early February 1945, aimed to drive the Germans from between the Maas and Rhine Rivers in order to establish the jumping off point for the Allied assault into the Rhineland. To support this attack, over a thousand guns were assembled from Canadian and British artilleries to smash and suppress the German defenders as the Anglo-Canadian manoeuvre forces advanced. Through innovation, guile and the use of new and more effective equipment, the gunners in support of First Canadian Army overcame challenging terrain and a weakened but nonetheless resolute enemy to enable the largest …

Cinderella’S Star: The Cp 140 Aurora And The Evolution Of The Royal Canadian Air Force’S Modern Long Range Patrol Capability, 1939-2015, Richard Mayne

Canadian Military History

This article traces the story of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s maritime air capability and the incredible ups and downs it has experienced throughout its service to the nation. Whether it was the stunning highs that it enjoyed during the Second World War and Cold War eras as well as the recovery it has made during recent overseas operations on the one hand, or the extreme lows it faced after the defeat of Nazi Germany and the end of the Soviet Union on the other, the maritime air community has led a life of boom and bust. Its story therefore …

“He Would Be Expected To Crack:” Battle Exhaustion, Desertion And The Court Martial Of Lieutenant R. J. Woods, Matthew Barrett Jun 2021

“He Would Be Expected To Crack:” Battle Exhaustion, Desertion And The Court Martial Of Lieutenant R. J. Woods, Matthew Barrett

Canadian Military History

This article examines psychological breakdown, combat stress and military justice through the 1945 general court martial of Lieutenant Reginald James Woods. During his first day in combat with the Lake Superior Regiment (Motor) on 17 August 1944, the twenty-five-year-old platoon leader disappeared. Woods remerged nearly two months later in London where he claimed to suffer from amnesia. The subsequent medical investigation and legal proceedings forced Canadian authorities to grapple with assumptions about combat leadership, mental responsibility and criminal culpability. This article adopts a graphic history approach to illustrate the subjective and contingent nature of memory and truth through the fog …

Historical Thinking And Visual Literacy: Exploring The Canadian War Museum With Graphic History, Matthew Barrett Apr 2021

Historical Thinking And Visual Literacy: Exploring The Canadian War Museum With Graphic History, Matthew Barrett

Canadian Military History

This article investigates how graphic history, a visual process which uses different artistic styles, illustrated narratives and comic-page sequential drawing, can contribute to our study and understanding of the past. I examine the theories and practices that underpin this visual approach to scholarship and overview how some academic historians are beginning to embrace graphic histories when conducting historical inquiry, analysis and interpretation. I also address important critiques about the academic rigour, pedagogical value and intellectual foundation of graphic history. I conclude with a graphic article to show how drawing, perspective and artistic techniques can be used to unpack historical concepts …

Killing Time, Not Germans: Reserve Positions In The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division During The Battle Of Normandy, Alex Souchen Apr 2021

Killing Time, Not Germans: Reserve Positions In The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division During The Battle Of Normandy, Alex Souchen

Canadian Military History

Allied victory during the Battle of Normandy is often attributed to operational and strategic factors, but the high-level focus on command and combat effectiveness obscures the infantry’s lived experiences. Although combat was their primary purpose, soldiers killed time as often as they killed Germans. This article examines the significance of the reserve position and the “down time” that soldiers spent within its confines. It argues that the reserve position was critical to combat effectiveness and high morale because it provided defensive and offensive flexibility and surplus labour for work parties and logistical tasks, while officers used it to integrate reinforcements …
