While Waiting For Rain: Community, Economy, And Law In A Time Of Change, John Henry Schlegel Nov 2022

While Waiting For Rain: Community, Economy, And Law In A Time Of Change, John Henry Schlegel

Books

What might a sensible community choose to do if its economy has fallen apart and becoming a ghost town is not an acceptable option? Unfortunately, answers to this question have long been measured against an implicit standard: the postwar economy of the 1950s. After showing why that economy provides an implausible standard—made possible by the lack of economic competition from the European and Asian countries, winners or losers, touched by the war—John Henry Schlegel attempts to answer the question of what to do.

While Waiting for Rain first examines the economic history of the United States as well as that …

Anti-Veiling Campaigns In Turkey: State, Society And Gender In The Early Republic, Sevgi Adak Jan 2022

Anti-Veiling Campaigns In Turkey: State, Society And Gender In The Early Republic, Sevgi Adak

Books

The veiling and unveiling of women have been controversial issues in Turkey since the late-Ottoman period. It was with the advent of local campaigns against certain veils in the 1930s, however, that women's dress turned into an issue of national mobilisation in which gender norms would be redefined. In this comprehensive analysis of the anti-veiling campaigns in interwar Turkey, Sevgi Adak casts light onto the historical context within which the meanings of veiling and unveiling in Turkey were formed. By shifting the focus from the high politics of the elite to the implementation of state policies, the book situates the …

In The Service Of God And Humanity: Conscience, Reason, And The Mind Of Martin R. Delany, Tunde Adeleke

Books

An analysis of Black activist Martin R. Delany's humanist vision for a world where everyone feels validated and empowered

Martin R. Delany (1812–1885) was one of the leading and most influential Black activists and nationalists in American history. His ideas have inspired generations of activists and movements, including Booker T. Washington in the late nineteenth century, Marcus Garvey in the early 1920s, Malcolm X and Black Power in 1960s, and even today's Black Lives Matter. Extant scholarship on Delany has focused largely on his Black nationalist and Pan-Africanist ideas. Tunde Adeleke argues that there is so much more about Delany …

Trade, Politics, And Revolution: South Carolina And Britain's Atlantic Commerce, 1730-1790, Huw David

Books

A study of early transatlantic trade in South Carolina that exposes the divisive complexity that led to war

London's "Carolina traders," a little-known group of transatlantic merchants, played a pivotal but historically neglected role in the rise of tensions in the South Carolina lowcountry. In Trade, Politics, and Revolution, Huw David delves into the lives of these men and explores their influence on commerce and politics in the years before and after the American Revolution.

Beginning in the 1730s, a few select merchants in Charleston fueled South Carolina's economic rise, used their political connections to prosper in British-Carolinian trade, …

Claiming Freedom: Race, Kinship, And Land In Nineteenth-Century Georgia, Karen Cook Bell

Books

An exploration of the political and social experiences of African Americans in transition from enslaved to citizen

Claiming Freedom is a noteworthy and dynamic analysis of the transition African Americans experienced as they emerged from Civil War slavery, struggled through emancipation, and then forged on to become landowners during the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction period in the Georgia lowcountry. Karen Cook Bell's work is a bold study of the political and social strife of these individuals as they strived for and claimed freedom during the nineteenth century.

Bell begins by examining the meaning of freedom through the delineation of acts of …

Laws Of Image: Privacy And Publicity In America, Samantha Barbas Jan 2015

Laws Of Image: Privacy And Publicity In America, Samantha Barbas

Books

Americans have long been obsessed with their images—their looks, public personas, and the impressions they make. This preoccupation has left its mark on the law. The twentieth century saw the creation of laws that protect your right to control your public image, to defend your image, and to feel good about your image and public presentation of self. These include the legal actions against invasion of privacy, libel, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. With these laws came the phenomenon of "personal image litigation"—individuals suing to vindicate their image rights. Laws of Image tells the story of how Americans came …

O! Call Back Yesterday, Joy Trott

Books

When VE Day was announced in 1945, twenty-one year old Joy Trott was halfway across the Atlantic Ocean with a newborn daughter who had yet to meet her father. Armed with a trunk and a pram, Joyce embarked on a new life alongside her Canadian husband.

In her memoirs, Trott recounts her early childhood in Depression-era Great Britain and the death of her parents, her life as a teenaged volunteer in the Auxiliary Territorial Service of the British Army, and her immigration to Canada as a young war bride. Interwoven into this personal narrative are anecdotes and reflections on class, …

Henry Beard Delany And Emma Beard Delaney, Brien Laing Feb 2003

Henry Beard Delany And Emma Beard Delaney, Brien Laing

Books

Henry Beard Delany and Emma Beard Delaney were two African-Americans who rose from the obscurity of an enslaved family to achieve distinguished success in their individual lives. A period of time does not portray a history. To achieve that, one needs ideas, theories, and assumptions. There must be a concept with a structure systematically laid out, which reaches points of view leading to firm conclusions that allow the recording of this history of two dynamic African-Americans. This study is an examination of two remarkable lives. Theirs is a story of dignified control over their destinies, displaying only rare flinching from …

Omar Pound and Robert Spoo have collected and edited the unpublished correspondence between the poet and his wife, combining it with restricted military orders and extensive references to FBI documents, previously unknown photographs, and an insightful introduction, to create the definitive work on this period of Pound's life.

Reflections On Women Of New Mexico, Rosalie Williams Jan 1998

Reflections On Women Of New Mexico, Rosalie Williams

Books

From the beginning of time in New Mexico, women have nurtured, guided, influenced and labored for their people, their families, and their communities. Their contributions have been acknowledged, only in recent years, through the unearthing of women's history. The sources of information about women in the early days had to be teased out from diaries, letters, excavations, oral histories, and other non-traditional sources. Inferences had to be derived from hints and clues in the records of men's activities, then assembled like a jigsaw puzzle into a more complete picture. Learning about the roles and contributions of women to the larger …

A Charge To Keep : Brewster Hospital, Brewster Methodist Hospital, Brewster Hospital School Of Nursing, Brewster-Duval School Of Nursing, 1901-1966, B. J. Sessions

Books

A great loss was felt by the Black community in Jacksonville when Brewster Hospital School of Nursing and Brewster-Duval School of Nursing closed. The closing of the schools was followed by the phasing out of Brewster Methodist Hospital, the only private hospital for Negroes in Jacksonville, Florida. Integration contributed to the closing of the schools and the hospital. The Brewster and Community Nurses Alumni Association voted to preserve the history of the schools of nursing and the hospital by recording it in book form. The History Committee was appointed. Research, collection, and categorization of information and materials were initiated. Research …
