A Guide To Avpri Materials On Russian Consuls And Commerce In The Near East, Theophilus C. Prousis
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
Tsarist expansion against the Ottoman Empire and commercial access to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean broadened the parameters of Russian influence in the Near East in the nineteenth century. For Imperial Russia, the Eastern Question became a complex and multi-faceted issue, encompassing the pursuit of strategic and diplomatic aims in Istanbul, the Straits, and the Balkan peninsula, the protection of Eastern Orthodoxy, and the extension of trade in the Black Sea and the Levant. Commerce and consuls provide windows on Russia’s interaction with the Near East and illuminate the variety of interests which comprised Russia’s Eastern Question.

The 1960 Presidential Election In Florida: Did The Space Race And The National Prestige Issue Play An Important Role?, Randy Wade Babish
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The landmark launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957, and the subsequent perception that the United States trailed the Soviet Union, not only in space but also in missiles, plagued the Eisenhower Administration for the rest of the decade. The Democratic Party strategy for the 1960 presidential election included using the space race, the alleged missile gap, and declining American prestige abroad to illustrate the need for new leadership in the White House. Senator John F. Kennedy, the Democratic nominee, effectively raised these issues throughout the general election to support his "New Frontier" program and won by the narrowest popular …

Avpr (Arkhiv Vneshnei Politiki Rossii) And The Orthodox East, Theophilus C. Prousis
Avpr (Arkhiv Vneshnei Politiki Rossii) And The Orthodox East, Theophilus C. Prousis
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article contributes to the Russian scholarly tradition of istochnikovedenie (study of sources) by identifying selected documents in Moscow's Arkhiv Vneshnei Politiki Rossii (AVPR, Archive of Russian Foreign Policy) on Imperial Russia's religious contacts with the Greek East during the nineteenth century. Describing the rich and diverse sources available in the archival/manuscript collections of Russia, Ukraine, and other parts of the former USSR is an essential task in laying the foundation for a more precise and systematic account of Russian religious and cultural ties to the Greek East than has hitherto been the case.
A Charge To Keep : Brewster Hospital, Brewster Methodist Hospital, Brewster Hospital School Of Nursing, Brewster-Duval School Of Nursing, 1901-1966, B. J. Sessions
Books
A great loss was felt by the Black community in Jacksonville when Brewster Hospital School of Nursing and Brewster-Duval School of Nursing closed. The closing of the schools was followed by the phasing out of Brewster Methodist Hospital, the only private hospital for Negroes in Jacksonville, Florida. Integration contributed to the closing of the schools and the hospital. The Brewster and Community Nurses Alumni Association voted to preserve the history of the schools of nursing and the hospital by recording it in book form. The History Committee was appointed. Research, collection, and categorization of information and materials were initiated. Research …

Excursion On The Euxine, Theophilus C. Prousis
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
Neal Ascherson, a British writer, journalist, and Poland specialist, has performed an admirable task-and done it well-reminding us of the Black Sea's centrality in the destiny of ancient Greeks, Scythians, Sarmatians, Goths, Khazars, Tatars, Slavs, Turks, and a host of other peoples who swept across the Pontic Steppe. In a work that combines travel writing, journalism, scholarly discourse, intellectual probing, and personal pilgrimage, Ascherson evokes places and peoples, discusses contemporary issues and problems, investigates history, culture, and archaeology, and explores the intrinsically difficult matter of sorting out national identities in multi-ethnic societies. Above all, this richly textured work illumines the …
Brick Versus Earth: The Construction And Destruction Of Confederate Seacoast Forts Pulaski And Mcallister, Georgia, David P. Eldridge
Brick Versus Earth: The Construction And Destruction Of Confederate Seacoast Forts Pulaski And Mcallister, Georgia, David P. Eldridge
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The United States government created America's third coastal defense system during the early-to-mid nineteenth century based upon the recommendations of the Board of Engineers of 1816. The engineers of 1816 believed the most economical means of protecting America was the construction of large, permanent forts along key areas of America's coast.
Union forces under Brigadier General Quincy Gillmore seized Fort Pulaski in April of 1862. Pulaski was one of the most formidable forts built under the third system. Gillmore required two months to install the weapons used against Pulaski; most of the time was spent installing smoothbore Columbiads, the standard …

The 1795 Rebellion In East Florida, Cormac A. O'Riordan
The 1795 Rebellion In East Florida, Cormac A. O'Riordan
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The 1795 rebellion in East Florida was a short lived affair, barely extending south of the St. Johns River, and resulting in the deaths of only three Spanish soldiers. Thirty-three of the sixty-seven people identified as rebels by the Spanish escaped across the St. Marys River into Georgia. The remainder were arrested and temporarily imprisoned in the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine. Though harsh sentences were handed down by a Spanish court in 1798, none were ever carried out. Almost all of those implicated in the insurrection were Anglo settlers. Some had been in East Florida since the …

A Report On Fort Diego, Palm Valley St. Johns County, Florida, William M. Jones
Books
Fort Diego, an 18th century fortified ranch house located in the Palm Valley Section of St. Johns County, Florida, is featured in histories relative to Northeast Florida. Since, however, the actual site of this fort has not been established, it shall be the purpose of this report to point out the place where it was likely situated. In order to bring this report into proper focus, however, it will be necessary first to discuss the activities of "Diego Espinosa," the builder of the fort; second to describe the attack on this fort by General Oglethorpe in 1740; and, last to …
