Book Review, Professor Vibhuti Patel Jul 2010

Book Review, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

The most mind-boggling issue of the 21st century has been identity politics linked with caste, ethnicity, race, religious and gender identities. It has played havoc in innumerable life situations: in personal lives, in the community, in national politics and in the global scenario. Whether is it communal violence in India, ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, apartheid in South Africa, Crisis in Afghanistan or war on Iraq, genocide in Rwanda or civil war in Sri Lanka, it is these grave socio-political and cultural contexts that makes this seminal contribution by Bhikhu Parekh worthy of debate and discussion.

Review Of Medical Miracles: Doctors, Saints, And Healing In The Modern World By Jacalyn Duffin, Nancy Schultz Jul 2010

Review Of Medical Miracles: Doctors, Saints, And Healing In The Modern World By Jacalyn Duffin, Nancy Schultz

Nancy Lusignan Schultz

This book embarks on an admirable mission: to push a centuries-old, one-way conversation towards dialogue. For more than 400 years, the Roman Catholic Church has probed miracles attributed to prospective saints through the careful assembling of scientific evidence. Inquiries into miraculous healings, then, consist of a rigorous ‘trial’ that frequently includes the testimony of doctors to establish them as supernatural events. Candidates for sainthood advance or await canonization based upon such testimony. For her study of medical miracles, physician and historian Jacalyn Duffin surveyed ‘more than 1,400 miracles pertaining to 229 different canonizations and 145 beatifications from 1588 to 1999’, …

Futebol Como Metáfora, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Jul 2010

Futebol Como Metáfora, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Matai Nosad Ha-Defus Ha-`Ivri Be-Qraqov? [Hebrew: When Did Hebrew Printing Begin In Cracow?], Magda Teter, Edward Fram Jul 2010

Matai Nosad Ha-Defus Ha-`Ivri Be-Qraqov? [Hebrew: When Did Hebrew Printing Begin In Cracow?], Magda Teter, Edward Fram

Magda Teter

The article challenges the common assumption that the first Hebrew book printed in Poland was a Bible printed in 1530. They discuss a book of Selihot (prayers) now in the Ossolinski library in Wroclaw, which was fraudulently dated as published in 1532 but was most certainly published after 1537. The authors carefully establish that the assumption of the 1530 Bible was a result of a bibliographic error that was repeated by scholars over two centuries. They conclude that Hebrew printing was not established in Poland before 1534 when Shaarei Dura was published.

Crime And Sacred Spaces In Early Modern Poland, Magda Teter Jul 2010

Crime And Sacred Spaces In Early Modern Poland, Magda Teter

Magda Teter

This principle of intersection between action and sacredness was shared by both Jews and Christians. Both Christian and Jewish religious elites highlighted differences between sacred. In Catholicism, validation of space required a consecration by a bishop in preparation for the ritual of the Eucharist. Church vessels were viewed as sacred in relation to the Eucharist. The Eucharist defined levels of sacredness. The controversy over the nature of the Eucharist during the Reformation, challenged the notion of Christian sacred place. After the Reformation, in the minds of the church, and in Poland increasingly also in the minds of the secular courts, …

Out Of The (Historiographic) Ghetto: Jews And The Reformation, Magda Teter, Debra Kaplan Jul 2010

Out Of The (Historiographic) Ghetto: Jews And The Reformation, Magda Teter, Debra Kaplan

Magda Teter

Existing historiography has created a historiographic ghetto, seldom considering Jewish sources and Jews as relevant to the larger narrative of European history. This has created two parallel, often disconnected areas of study, “European history” and “Jewish history.” Archival materials from across Europe strongly show that Jews and Christians resided side by side and interacted on a daily basis in early modern Europe. Reformation Strasbourg and post-Reformation Poland, two geographically and demographically diverse cases offer new insights about the past by including sources about Jews. In Reformation Strasbourg, cross-confessional collaboration was more frequent than previously imagined, as leaders of different Christian …

Apostasy, Fraud And The Beginnings Of Hebrew Printing In Cracow, Magda Teter, Edward Fram Jul 2010

Apostasy, Fraud And The Beginnings Of Hebrew Printing In Cracow, Magda Teter, Edward Fram

Magda Teter

The article investigates the mysterious history of three Jewish brothers who began a Jewish press in Cracow in 1534 and who converted to Catholicism in 1537 but continued to print Jewish books after their conversion. Their fate has fascinated scholars, since one of the brothers published a New Testament in Hebrew letter transcription, and proselytized among Jews, another continued to print both Jewish and non-Jewish books, while still another became a business man. One of the brothers returned to Judaism and printed Hebrew books in Constantinople. But scholars have been unable to match their pre- and post- conversion names, and …

The Legend Of Ger Zedek (Righteous Convert) Of Wilno As Polemic And Reassurance, Magda Teter Jul 2010

The Legend Of Ger Zedek (Righteous Convert) Of Wilno As Polemic And Reassurance, Magda Teter

Magda Teter

The article analyzes the popular legend of a righteous convert to Judaism in eighteenth-century Wilno (now Vilnius) according to which a prominent count, Walentyn Potocki, converted to Judaism and then died a martyr's death at the stake in Wilno. The article traces parts of the legend to Boccaccio's Decameron, discusses the attitudes to converts to Judaism in Jewish law, and explains the historical and cultural context in which the legend emerged.

Higiene Da Língua, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Jul 2010

Higiene Da Língua, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Pan-Africanism And African Unity: Any Prospects?, Conrad John Masabo Mr. May 2010

Pan-Africanism And African Unity: Any Prospects?, Conrad John Masabo Mr.

Conrad John Masabo Mr.

At the close of 50 years of independence, Africa is still yearning for unity despite of the more than 100 years of the initiatives made by the pan-Africanists. The essay addresses important issues of political, economic, social and cultural rebirth of the African continent. It argues that, if the ideas of Pan-Africanism or Africanisms are deeply persuaded they can make Africa successfully in coping with its problems and orient itself in a rapidly globalising world. While there is hope for Africa in the continental unity and pan-African political and economic projects; the paper also points out imperialism and neo-colonialism as …

Os Fundamentos Do Direito E O Processo De Bolonha, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha May 2010

Semiótica Dos Titulos, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha May 2010

Semiótica Dos Titulos, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

O humanista Clenardo, no séc.

Curry On Schwarzenbach, 'On Civic Friendship: Including Women In The State' (Book Review), Lynne E. Curry May 2010

Curry On Schwarzenbach, 'On Civic Friendship: Including Women In The State' (Book Review), Lynne E. Curry

Lynne E. Curry

In On Civic Friendship, Sybil A. Schwarzenbach engages the reader in an extended exploration of the question, "what holds a good and just society together?" (p. 1). The question seems a particularly urgent one if the reader accepts the author's stark premise that the United States is a democracy in steep decline, a society in which "loyalty and goodness--even justice itself--are frequently laughed at in the face of the almighty dollar, commercial success, or the fame afforded by the wielding of brute power" (p. xi). Schwarzenbach's remedy for this gloomy state of affairs is to resuscitate Aristotle's concept of  …

The Digital Future Is Now: What The Humanities Can Learn From Escience, Christine L. Borgman May 2010

The Digital Future Is Now: What The Humanities Can Learn From Escience, Christine L. Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

As the digital humanities mature, their scholarship is taking on many characteristics of the sciences, becoming more data-intensive, information-intensive, distributed, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative. While few scholars in the humanities or arts would wish to be characterized as emulating scientists, they do envy the comparatively rich technical and resource infrastructure of the sciences. The interests of all scholars in the university align with respect to access to data, library resources, and computing infrastructure. However, the scholarly interests of the sciences and humanities diverge regarding research practices, sources of evidence, and degrees of control over those sources. This talk will explore the …
