Innovation, Liberation, And Agency In The Outsider Visionary Art Of James Hampton And Purvis Young, Griffin J. Joerger Jan 2024

Innovation, Liberation, And Agency In The Outsider Visionary Art Of James Hampton And Purvis Young, Griffin J. Joerger

Senior Projects Spring 2024

This project argues for the urgency of scholarship, inherent artistic sensibility, and legitimacy of modern, religious, spiritual, visionary, untrained, and self-taught art from the American South which challenges conventions of materials and exhibition. The research focuses on two specific African-American visionary outsider artists named James Hampton (1909-1964) from South Carolina and Washington, D.C., and Purvis Young (1943-2010) from Miami, Florida, both of whom defied white and classical standards of beauty and value. The subject of education will shape my argument, comparing how the differences in artistic opportunities, training, and support systems in the South versus the North impact Southern, self-taught, …

The Northport Beatnik, Aidan Lily Athanasio Jan 2024

The Northport Beatnik, Aidan Lily Athanasio

Senior Projects Spring 2024

I have always had a passion for history and have spent my years in school studying ancient and often far-away civilizations, but I have yet to look at the history closest to me. Where I’m from is a massive part of who I am, and discovering that history is just as important as the topics I’ve learned in class. My research brought me to discover the rich history of Northport, New York, a small town on the north shore of Long Island, and my hometown. My love of history and film initially had me hoping to make a documentary about …

The Namasudras And The Invited Missionary: Caste, Recognition, And Agency In 19th And 20th Century Bengal, Cedric Rule-Becker Jan 2024

The Namasudras And The Invited Missionary: Caste, Recognition, And Agency In 19th And 20th Century Bengal, Cedric Rule-Becker

Senior Projects Spring 2024

The Namasudra community of West Bengal is currently the focus of electoral politics in the region. As political parties attempt to gain or maintain power, this community is seen as a valuable asset to that end. The Namasudras are no strangers to this position, caught in the push and pull of outsider overtures for allegiance. This project seeks to investigate the actions of the Namasudras in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to better understand their current position. It will focus on their interactions with missionaries as a method of discussing issues of agency, caste, and recognition. The analysis …

Americans In Japan: A Look At Race, Land, And The Colonization Of Hokkaidō In The Meiji Era, Jack Bamford

Senior Projects Spring 2024

The signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States on July 29, 1858 saw the opening of Japan to international relations on a much larger scale than previously experienced, allowing for not just the creation of connections with the Western world, but the transmitting of Western ideas of power and control--namely, the structures of imperialism and colonialism. The research that follows aims to grapple with just how much influence the United States had in the development of Japanese colonialism by looking at the development of Japan’s northern island of Hokkaidō in the Meiji period. …

Towards Illegibility: A Series Of Reflections On Living Beyond Language, Ariella Brodie-Weisberg

Senior Projects Spring 2024

After she died, the ecstatic and the mundane collided and exposed each other. The dead live in the place of stories. Those who survive gather the scattered remains of a life, cohere them into forms so they may be remembered. But in making this story, we so often sacrifice raw, visceral experience –

But every once in a while, caught off guard, the ecstatic comes. Something animal like a moan or wail overrides sense and sensation overrides story and there you are as you were in life: singular and without reference, indescribable and so utterly here.

My mother wasn’t buried …

Más Grande Que Una Isla, Georgi Elizabeth Valero

Senior Projects Spring 2023

Más Grande Que Una Isla is a film about the political leanings of Cuban-Americans in Miami-Dade County, highlighting the dissonance in supporting policies that negatively affect the immigration process for others when they were incredibly privileged in the programs and opportunities available to them. It explores these political beliefs by tracing back to their origination, drawing out the privilege in the Cuban immigration experience that has existed for over half a century, leading us back to the present. While the film extends to a broader discussion, exploring the views of the Cuban community in Miami, it is personal at its …

Staging Soviet Ideals: The Birth Of Soviet Ballet And Its Reception 1927-1932, Abigail Rose Crosby Jan 2023

Staging Soviet Ideals: The Birth Of Soviet Ballet And Its Reception 1927-1932, Abigail Rose Crosby

Senior Projects Spring 2023

This project explores ballet’s development as a Soviet art form through the critical reviews of three early Soviet ballets: The Golden Age (Zolotoy vek, 1930), The Bolt (Bolt, 1931), and Flames of Paris (Plamya parizha, 1932). Prior to the implementation of Socialist Realism, which set parameters for all cultural production within the Soviet Union from 1934 onward, definitions of Soviet culture were often unclear. As a result, it was often difficult for ballet makers to know what to produce and given the art form’s deep aristocratic roots, pressure to innovate in order to fit into the Soviet cultural project was …
