Women Rising: The American Revolution And Evangelical Thought, Roxanne Reinhardt Jan 2019

Women Rising: The American Revolution And Evangelical Thought, Roxanne Reinhardt

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

This project explores the events leading up to the American Revolution such as the Great Awakening and the Seven Years War through the works of Hannah Heaton and Esther Edwards Burr's diaries, as well as Sarah Osborn's writing. Thus, by looking at the religious views of women during this time, this paper explains the trend of revivalist and evangelical uprisings and the religious break from authority for marginalized members of society. This paper argues that female evangelicals found religion and prayer an active way to participate and promote themselves in the American Revolution.

Projecting A White Savior, The Body, And Policy: Pre-Classical And Transitional Cinema's Boxing Films In The United States 1893-1915, Siobhan Marie Chaney Carter

WWU Graduate School Collection

This thesis examines pre-classical and transitional cinema’s boxing films from 1893-1915 alongside the arc of World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson’s career, a career that was oftentimes captured on film. My aim is to demonstrate ways in which cinema was used by white filmmakers to perpetuate and reproduce a sense of visual knowing on behalf of audiences regarding a racial hierarchy on cinema screens and perpetuate the myth of white masculine superiority over African Americans through the visuals of male bodies in the boxing ring. With this thesis, I hope to expand critical understandings of white mythmaking in cinema that preceded …

The Good Bloke In Contemporary Australian Workplaces: Origins, Qualities And Impacts Of A National Cultural Archetype In Small For-Profit Businesses, Christopher George Taylor

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study explored the nature and significance of a common but widely misunderstood phrase encountered in Australia: The Good Bloke. Underlying this enquiry was awareness, based on the researcher’s personal and professional experience, that the idea of a Good Bloke powerfully influences individual perceptions of leaders in Australian small-to-mid sized for-profit firms. The study commenced with an exploration of the origins and history of the phrase, tracing it to the 1788 arrival of a disproportionately male Anglo-Celtic population was composed significantly of transported convicts. The language and mores of this unique settler population evolved for two centuries based on relationships, …

Developing And Sustaining Political Citizenship For Poor And Marginalized People: The Evelyn T. Butts Story, Kenneth Cooper Alexander

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study tells the deep, rich story of Evelyn T. Butts, a grassroots civil rights champion in Norfolk, Virginia, whose bridge leadership style can teach and inspire new generations about political, community, and social change. Butts used neighbor-to-neighbor skills to keep her community connected with the national civil rights movement, which had heavily relied on grassroots leaders—especially women—for much of its success in overthrowing America’s Jim Crow system of segregation and suppression. She is best-known for her 1963 lawsuit that resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1966 decision to ban poll taxes for state and local elections, a democratizing event …

Volunteering To Lead: Combat Affairs That Shaped The Command Philosophy Of Major Rufus R. Dawes, U.S.A. And Captain James Cooper Nisbet, C.S.A. (1861-1862), Trace Brusco Jan 2019

Volunteering To Lead: Combat Affairs That Shaped The Command Philosophy Of Major Rufus R. Dawes, U.S.A. And Captain James Cooper Nisbet, C.S.A. (1861-1862), Trace Brusco

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The frequently disorganized command structure which dictated American Civil War battles often resulted in direction of military strategy being passed over into the junior officer ranks. These volunteer leaders fought directly with the regular volunteer soldier that filled the ranks of both Union and Confederate armies. In exchange for their position amongst the common volunteer, the junior officers shared the same dangers in combat as their subordinates. In this study, junior officers Rufus Dawes and James Cooper Nisbet serve as the focus of a study that reveals what attributes contributed to the success and failures of command. Dawes, who served …

A Comprehensive Bibliography Of Nineteenth Century Bicycling Periodicals, Christopher A. Sweet Dec 2018

A Comprehensive Bibliography Of Nineteenth Century Bicycling Periodicals, Christopher A. Sweet

Christopher A. Sweet

Bicycling became hugely popular in the second half of the nineteenth century. At the time, bicycle manufacturing was an important American industry, bicycle racing was one of the most popular spectator sports, and joining a bicycle club was a mark of social distinction. This bicycle craze occurred at the same time as an explosion in the publishing of American periodicals. Bicycle manufacturers invested heavily in newspaper and magazine advertising which spurred the creation of new periodicals. This paper documents more than one hundred bicycling periodicals that were published in the nineteenth century. The bibliographic essay provides historical context for both …

On The Global Hot Seat: University Presidents In The Global 1968, Deborah Cohen, Lessie Frazier Dec 2018

On The Global Hot Seat: University Presidents In The Global 1968, Deborah Cohen, Lessie Frazier

Deborah Cohen

The claim that ’68 was global has become axiomatic. How so, for whom, with what impact? Scholars have productively pursued two scales of analysis: grassroots and geopolitical. While student movements have been the premier instance of the more socio-cultural scale, seldom has their mobilization been analyzed vis-à-vis the ostensibly more macro scale of supra-state entitie. Intermediaries between these sectors, leaders of major universities occupied an acutely uncomfortable, pivotal place. Through historical analysis based on archival research (on the biographies of university administrators, student movements, and media debates) the Global 1968 is here considered from the perspective of higher education administrators …

Ultramontanism, Nationalism, And The Fall Of Saigon: Historicizing The Vietnamese American Catholic Experience, Tuan Hoang Dec 2018

Ultramontanism, Nationalism, And The Fall Of Saigon: Historicizing The Vietnamese American Catholic Experience, Tuan Hoang

Tuan Hoang

Notwithstanding the steady growth of Vietnamese Catholics in the United States,
the lack of historical research has left many gaps and led to a generic and imprecise
understanding of their experience. The scholarship from the social sciences and
religious studies has shed light on some areas but also leaves out the historical
dimensions, particularly the exilic identity that formed among Catholic refugees
during the initial period of resettlement. This identity came from three major
historical developments: the impact of ultramontanism during the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries, the experience of nationalism and anticommunism, and the
abrupt end of the Vietnam War. …

Uncle Tom's Cabin In Krakow: Cross-Cultural Apprehensions, Nancy Schultz

Nancy Lusignan Schultz

Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin has been mired in controversy since 1852; it continues to challenge readers today. During spring 2018, I had the opportunity to teach the novel twice, once at Salem State University in Massachusetts, and then as a visiting professor at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland.

The Resettlement Of Vietnamese Refugee Religious, Priests, And Seminarians In The United States, 1975–1977, Tuan Hoang Dec 2018

The Resettlement Of Vietnamese Refugee Religious, Priests, And Seminarians In The United States, 1975–1977, Tuan Hoang

Tuan Hoang

The fall of Saigon (1975) was a significant factor in the large numbers of Vietnamese American vocations to the priesthood and religious life. This event led some 125,000 refugees from South Vietnam to the U.S., including hundreds of priests, seminarians, and men and women religious. Their sudden presence prompted a host of responses from American Catholics under the leadership and coordination of the United States Catholic Conference. This leadership led to relatively quick resettlement of religious, priests, and seminarians. Combining exilic experience and identity with the Catholic faith, these refugees established communities in the U.S. and promoted vocations to the …
