When Beef Was King. Or Why Do Colombians Eat So Little Pork?, Shawn Van Ausdal
When Beef Was King. Or Why Do Colombians Eat So Little Pork?, Shawn Van Ausdal
Shawn Van Ausdal
This article seeks to understand why Colombians, compared to many other Latin Americans, have traditionally eaten so much more beef than pork. The article first points to the development of a culinary tradition that favored beef. The bulk of the argument, though, centers on the fact that, historically, beef has been substantially cheaper than pork. This price difference, in turn, is rooted in the low productivity of Colombian agriculture, which made corn, often used to fatten hogs, expensive. Additional factors that favored beef include a receding agrarian frontier, a small hog population, the various advantages of cattle, a conflict–ridden history …

American Women Physicians In 2000: A History In Progress, Ellen S. More, Marilyn Greer
Ellen S. More
This article surveys major trends in the history of women physicians in American medicine during the 20th century, noting especially factors that have elicited renewed and increasingly public attention during the past two decades. These include the challenges of achieving greater professional visibility while also balancing family and career, of sustaining women physicians' legacy of commitment to women's health and primary care medicine without reinforcing the traditional stereotype that these are the specialties "best suited" to women doctors, and of addressing the need for more ethnic and racial diversity in the medical profession. Other recent developments include the leveling off …

Changing The Face Of Medicine: One Historian's Experience As A Curator, Ellen S. More
Ellen S. More
In the spring of 2001 during a meeting of the American Association for the History of Medicine, Elizabeth Fee, Chief of the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), invited me to become the Visiting Curator for a new exhibition they intended to present on the history of women physicians. It was the first full-scale exhibition ever devoted to that subject by the NLM. After more than two years’ preparation, the exhibition, “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians,” opened in April 2003 and continued on display at the NLM for more than two …

Empathy As A Hermeneutic Practice, Ellen S. More
Ellen S. More
This essay will argue for the centrality of empathy in the doctor-patient relationship-as a core of ethically sound, responsible therapeutics. By "empathy," I intend an explicitly hermeneutic practice, informed by a reflexive understanding of patient and self. After providing an overview of the history of the concept of empathy in clinical medicine, I discuss current definitions and the use of Balint groups in residency training as a way to develop empathic competence in novice physicians.

Vision For "A New Human Being" And A "Human Synergistic Movement": A New Humanistic Movement Aligned With Transformational Archetypal Energies, Carroy U. Ferguson
Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.
In previous writings, I spoke of the “Path of the Bridger: AHP’s Role in Co-Creating a New Reality for Human Togetherness and the Evolution of Consciousness,” “The Voices of Transformational Archetypal Energies: The Psychic Energy behind AHP’s Mission,” and “The Gift and Challenge of ‘Free Will’: The Connection to Transformational Archetypal Energies.” I wanted to remind us of how and why AHP came into being as a “Mother Organization,” arguably to give birth to an organized focus on validating the dignity of the Human Spirit, maximizing Human Potential, and planting seeds for Well Being and the Evolution of Consciousness. In …

Gender Audits As An Input To Engender Governance: Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Gender Audits As An Input To Engender Governance: Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Professor Vibhuti Patel
‘gender audit’ is referred to as ‘mainstreaming’ public policy, including legislation, regulations, allocations, taxation and social projects, from the point of view of their effect on the status of women in a given society. Gender audits also analyse the income and expenditures of the government from a gender perspective. The basic assumption of a gender audits is that public policy impacts differently on men and women. The variance stems from the different roles of women and men in the family and from the lower economic status of women. The purpose of gender audits is to lead to changes in public …

Bottom-Up Organizing In The Trades: An Interview With Mike Lucas, Ibew Director Of Organizing, Jeff Grabelsky
Jeffrey Grabelsky
[Excerpt] Like the bottom-up organizers who built the IBEW 100 years ago by traveling from city to city, working at their trade and preaching the union creed, Lucas has been around the block. From Florida to Oklahoma, Indiana to Tennessee, he worked from 1954 to 1959 as a member of the Laborers and Teamsters unions. He began his organizing career in the utility construction industry, and first volunteered his talents to the IBEW in 1960 by organizing the manufacturing workers at a new Studebaker plant in Bloomington, Indiana, which he had recently helped build as a union electrician. He served …
The Trial Of Queen Caroline And The Impeachment Of President Clinton: Law As A Weapon For Political Reform, Daniel H. Erskine
The Trial Of Queen Caroline And The Impeachment Of President Clinton: Law As A Weapon For Political Reform, Daniel H. Erskine
Daniel H. Erskine
This article explores the calculated use of legal mechanisms to impact national politics and the effect such utilization had on accomplishing deliberate political reform. In answering why political actors use legal procedures as political weapons and whether such use is effective, this paper analyzes two historical examples to illustrate that law as political weapon is extremely successful in accomplishing political change. In the early 1800’s, England’s King sought to defrock his politically radical heroine Queen Caroline through the parliamentary mechanism of a Bill of Pains and Penalties, which caused a flourish of public criticism and call for political revolution. Public …

This collection of poems by Ernest Antony (1894-1960) was first published in 1930, and since then has been largely forgotten, except for the title poem, 'The Hungry Mile', which has become iconic, but generally attributed to 'Anonymous'. This edition was published by the Maritime Union of Australia, and Cahill's 'Introduction' is the first detailed account of the poet's work and life.

Paradigm Shift - The Two Models., Dennis M. Richards

The projected costs of trends expected to occur in Australian society over the next 40 years, particularly demographic changes, have the potential to threaten the fiscal sustainability of Australian Government finances. These costs particularly relate to the financing of health care, and the Government has called for new models of care to address this problem. This paper presents and discusses some historical models or paradigms of health care that may assist in understanding the current need for change and a possible solution.

This paper proposes a comparative analysis of some rulings of the US Supreme Court and of the European Court of Human Rights. Reviewing cases related to international legal problems or using comparative legal reasoning, the paper suggests that the difference of attitudes between the two courts in human rights cases is embedded in the classical opposition between men and citizen.

A Brief History Of The Philippine Communist Movement, Roberto Martin N. Galang
A Brief History Of The Philippine Communist Movement, Roberto Martin N. Galang
Roberto Martin N. Galang
These chapters provide a snapshot of the history of the Philippines from 1850 to 1963 from the point of view of the Philippine communist movement. The papers trace the rise of Philippine communism as an offshoot of the economic development of the country, which began under the last half-century of Spanish colonial rule. It then narrates the changing composition of the communist movement as the Philippines embarks on a path of tremendous political revolution from Spanish, Revolutionary, American, Japanese colonial rule, then finally as a fledgling republic.
