From Black Studies To Multiculturalism: The Evolution Of The Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center At Wright State University, 1971-2018, Opolot Okia

History Faculty Publications

With the growth of Black studies departments and programs across the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the field developed with a prominent multidisciplinary focus and a mission to affect meaningful social change. Much of the literature on the Black studies movement has focused on the academic programs and departments established during this formative period. Outside of Ohio State University and Kent State University, little has been published on the development of Black studies in Ohio. Moving beyond academic programs, there is also very little research on Black cultural centers. Compounding this problem, the research on Black …

Threads Of Empire: Loyalty And Tsarist Authority In Bashkiria, 1552–1917. By Charles Steinwedel., Sean Pollock

History Faculty Publications

This book addresses relations between Russian imperial officials and the peoples of Bashkiria, in the southern Urals Mountains region, in the period between 1552 and 1917. Its purpose is to show the many ways that officials sought to weave Bashkiria into the fabric of Russian empire, as well as the ways that Bashkiria’s peoples shaped the process of their incorporation into it. Steinwedel rightly emphasizes the protracted, negotiated nature of this process. Russia’s “fundamental challenge” in extracting resources from the region was “to cultivate loyal servitors of the tsar who could represent and stabilize imperial authority” (4). As this and …

The congregation of St. Anthony's parish in Bellevue, Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati, was stunned on Sunday, December 7, 1902, when Father Thomas McGrady, its beloved pastor, announced his resignation. According to the fullest newspaper account, "there was bowing of heads, women and children wept." With great affection, the account continued, "almost all of the congregation lingered and crowded around their beloved pastor, weeping and pleading with him not to leave them." He told them he would remain in the community, "only not as their priest."

This account examines McGrady's decision to become a socialist, his experience trying …

Mustaches And Masculine Codes In Early Twentieth-Century America, Christopher Oldstone-Moore Oct 2011

Mustaches And Masculine Codes In Early Twentieth-Century America, Christopher Oldstone-Moore

History Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to deepen our understanding of twentieth-century masculinity by considering the social function of facial hair. The management of facial hair has always been a medium of gendered body language, and as such has elicited a nearly continuous private and public conversation about manliness. Careful attention to this conversation, and to trends in facial hairstyles, illuminates a distinct and consistent pattern of thought about masculinity in early twentieth-century America. The preeminent form of facial hair-mustaches- was used to distinguish between two elemental masculine types: sociable and autonomous. A man was neither wholly one nor the …

The Forgotten Origins Of The Ecumenical Movement In England: The Grindelwald Conferences, 1892-95, Christopher Oldstone-Moore

History Faculty Publications

Ruth Rouse, writing in A History of the Ecumenical Movement, made an extraordinary claim about the origins of modern ecumenism. She identified two factors in the 1890s that, in her words, "changed the course of Church history and made possible the modern ecumenical movement." One was the Student Christian Movement, established m 1895 by the American Methodist layman, John R. Mott. The other factor was the Grindelwald (Switzerland) Reunion Conferences, an assembly mostly of English church leaders organized by a Methodist minister, Henry Lunn, between 1892 and 1895. Mott's movement is very well known to modern readers. The Grindelwald Conferences, …
