George H Baker

They were leaders in the canning industry, in government, the Methodist Episcopal Church, farming, banking, publishing, academia, and real estate. They built imposing Victorian residences in Aberdeen and established the local cemetery which bears the family name and contains a number of large monuments to mark their final resting places. The purposes of this article, a summary of more extensive genealogical data collected by the compiler, is to provide a sketch identifying …

French Claims In North America, 1500-59, Brian Slattery Dec 1977

French Claims In North America, 1500-59, Brian Slattery

Brian Slattery

Historians usually trace the origins of Canada to the initial explorations of England and France, with emphasis upon the French voyages of the early sixteenth century involving Verrazzano, Cartier, and Roberval. France, it is said, officially asserted territorial rights in North America at this era, based upon the discoveries and acts of taking possession of its emissaries, and that these claims were sustained, if in a somewhat desultory manner, until the successful colonizing efforts of the following century. The French crown is thought to have treated North America as unowned land open to appropriation, territorium nullius, rejecting the claims of …

A 'Potted History' Of The Seamen's Union Of Australia, 1872-1972: Articles From 'The Seamen's Journal', 1972, Rowan Cahill

Rowan Cahill

This is a collection of brief articles covering the century of history of the militant Seamen's Union of Australia (SUA), 1872-1972. The articles were published over nine-months in the SUA journal 'The Seamen's Journal' as part of the union's commemoration of a century of organisation in 1972. The articles are of historiographical interest in that they were ahead of the time in some respects, discussing 'racism' in the union, and attempting to redress the historical neglect of the sea and maritime workers in Australian history, a neglect described and documented later by historian Frank Broeze in his acclaimed study 'Island …

Logical And Persuasive Structures In Charles Darwin's Prose Style, Charles Kay Smith Dec 1969

Logical And Persuasive Structures In Charles Darwin's Prose Style, Charles Kay Smith

Charles Kay Smith

This paper analyzes Charles Darwin's characteristic writing behavior. Darwin was a more interesting and dedicated writer than he is commonly credited for being. This essay will reassess the importance of his writing. The surface characteristics of Darwin's prose (conventionally referred to as his "style") seem at first glance so plain and ordinary that Darwin's writing rarely interests students of style. Exceptions such as Theodore Baird in an essay entitled "Darwin and the Tangled Bank"1 and Stanley Edgar Hyman in a longer study of Darwin's writing, The Tangled Bank,2 both make a point of the current general disregard of Darwin as …

Toward A Participatory Rhetoric: Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal, Charles Kay Smith Oct 1968

Toward A Participatory Rhetoric: Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal, Charles Kay Smith

Charles Kay Smith

This essay is a literary analysis of the special form of satire Swift invented for A Modest Proposal. Some of Swift's more conventional classical figures of speech have already been noted, though more or less in isolation to one another as well as to larger designs and aesthetic aims. Swift's genius in A Modest Proposal is to create a speaker whose monologue keeps two distinct styles operational at all times. The style of which the speaker is aware is constantly opposed by covert and innovative verbal and grammatical techniques which the proposer sets in motion but of which he remains …
