Introduction To The Special Issue Defending Ethnic Studies In Arizona: Obama, The Rise Of The Hard Right, Arizona And Texas And The Attack On Racialized Communities Studies, Sundiata Keita Cha-Jua
Sundiata K Cha-Jua
Arizona’s and Texas’s recent anti-ethnic studies enactments have a long and sordid history; they represent the culmination of Eurocentric, nativist and racist initiatives begun decades ago, though their roots go back nearly two hundred years. Arizona House Bill 2281 represents rightwing responses to the current national socioeconomic crisis and the state’s failing economy. According to Duane Campbell, a progressive political economist, “with little else to offer the unemployed, scapegoating immigrants has become a substitute in Arizona for having a real solution to solving the economic needs of its residents.” Collectively, HB 2281 and the Texas State Board of Education revisions …

Missing Mandalas: Development And Theoretical Gaps, Rosita Dellios
Missing Mandalas: Development And Theoretical Gaps, Rosita Dellios
Rosita Dellios
The mandala is a fitting metaphor to act as a model for a more balanced conception of development, one that recognizes culture as central to human resource development. A globalising world can be understood as a unity, in which cultural and material divisions - as well as connections – are more readily discerned. The mandala exhibits three key attributes necessary for a more balanced world. They are the integrating elements of the relational, the educational and orientational – whereby cultural and ethical direction serves to bestow meaning in people’s lives. In the opposite direction, a disintegrating world scenario would feature …
Mata Hari: A Life Of Lies, Olivia Blessing
Mata Hari: A Life Of Lies, Olivia Blessing
Olivia L Blessing
During the international scandal of her 1917 trial and subsequent execution, Mata Hari’s name became a universal title for a traitorous woman. Since then, spies like Tokyo Rose and Radient Jade were known respectively as the "Mata Hari of the airways" and the "Mata Hari of the East." However, unlike the other two women, Mata Hari was famous for being a woman who would do anything for a price years before the French accused her of treason, and this image hurt her during the trial as much as the accusations of treason did.
Unrwa: Through The Eyes Of Its Refugee Employees, Randa Farah
Unrwa: Through The Eyes Of Its Refugee Employees, Randa Farah
Randa R Farah Dr.
The article argues that the absence of Palestinian political leadership and institutions following al-Nakba in 1948, led the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to take on an exaggerated role that mirrored those of a welfare government-in-exile. The Agency created the matrix that organized daily life in refugee camps, a process facilitated by its Palestinian and refugee employees.1 Local staff holds a paradoxical position: (i) as Palestinians who share with their beneficiaries a collective history, and (ii) as UNRWA employees who exercise less power and authority compared to international staff. The latter …

“Knowledge In The Service Of The Cause”:Education And The Sahrawi Struggle For Self-Determination, Randa Farah
Randa R Farah Dr.
This article examines the education strategy of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), the state-in-exile with partial sovereignty on “borrowed territory” in Algeria. The article, which opens with a historical glance at the conflict, argues that SADR’s education program not only succeeded in fostering self-reliance by developing skilled human resources, but was forward looking, using education as a vehicle to instill “new traditions of citizenship” and a new imagined national community, in preparation for future repatriation. In managing refugee camps as provinces of a state, the boundaries between the “refugee” as status and the “citizen” as a political identity were …

Charles Tilly As A Theorist Of Nationalism, Rogers Brubaker
Charles Tilly As A Theorist Of Nationalism, Rogers Brubaker
Rogers Brubaker
This paper considers Charles Tilly as an important but underappreciated theorist of nationalism. Tilly’s theory of nationalism emerged from the “bellicist” strand of his earlier work on state-formation and later incorporated a concern with performance, stories, and cultural modeling. Yet despite the turn to culture in Tilly’s later work, his theory of nationalism remained state-centered, materialist, and instrumentalist—a source of both its power and its limitations.

“Our Indians In Our America: Anti-Imperialist Imperialism And The Construction Of Brazilian Modernity”, Tracy Devine Guzmán
“Our Indians In Our America: Anti-Imperialist Imperialism And The Construction Of Brazilian Modernity”, Tracy Devine Guzmán
Tracy Devine Guzmán
Indigenous peoples have been used and imagined as guardians of the Brazilian frontier since at least the mid-nineteenth century. This association was central to the foundation of the Indian Protection Service (Serviço de Proteção aos Índios, or SPI) during the early 1900s and culminated with the Amazonian Vigilance System (Sistema de Vigelância da Amazônia, or SIVAM) at the turn of the millennium. Throughout the period, the abiding desire to establish defensive dominion over disputed national territory subjected individuals and groups identified as "Indians" to the power of overlapping discourses of scientific progress, national security, and economic development. A trinity of …

“According To Our Institute.” The Charter Of The Congregation Of The Mission, John E. Rybolt
John E Rybolt
St. Vincent often referred to the "Institute." The term is inherently ambiguous, but its meaning as "charter" is explained here. Two versions of the "charter" are compared. Its importance lies in its continuing existence as the nucleus of the identity of the Congregation of the Mission as established by the Church.

A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison
A Critical Race Analysis Of The Hiring Process For Head Coaches In Ncaa College Football, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
In this article, we respond to Singer’s (2005) challenge to sport management scholars to consider race-based epistemologies in conducting certain kinds of research in the field, as we use critical race theory (CRT) as a framework to analyze the Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) Hiring Report Card (HRC) (Harrison & Yee, 2009). The BCA HRC was created as a result of the access discrimination that has historically taken place in college sport (Brooks & Althouse, 2000; Cunningham & Sagas, 2005), which has consequently contributed to the underrepresentation of racial minorities in the head coach position in college football. The HRC …

The eeriness of Poe’s words has echoed down throughout the years to enthrall generation after generation with the verses’ sense of dismay, desperation, and fatality. Yet many have forgotten that, centuries earlier, the Celts were telling their own tales of shadowy ravens and tragic futures foretold. Many remain in the form of legends about their goddess of war—Morrígan. This goddess was a complex, triune character; comprehending the entirety of her power and importance in the Celtic myths requires an in-depth examination of her appearances in the old legends and the impact those tales had on the Celts.

A Brief History Of The American Fish Culture Company 1877-1997., Michael A. Rice
A Brief History Of The American Fish Culture Company 1877-1997., Michael A. Rice
Michael A Rice
The American Fish Culture Company operated for nearly 120 years from 1877-1997 in Carolina, Rhode Island growing three species of trout under the under the direction of several generations of the Hazard family of Peace Dale, Rhode Island. The company was one of the first trout producers in the United States, and was considered the largest fish farm in the country by the early 1920s. Major innovations of the company included early adoption of pelleted feeds, and the introduction of photoperiod manipulation to spawn fish out of season. The company ultimately failed due to intense competition from larger producers in …
Gender Differences In The Correlates Of Volunteering And Charitable Giving, Christopher J. Einolf
Gender Differences In The Correlates Of Volunteering And Charitable Giving, Christopher J. Einolf
Christopher J Einolf
Psychological research has found that women score higher on most measures of the traits, motivations, and values that predict helping others, and women are more likely to help family and friends. However, sex differences in the institutional helping behaviors of volunteering and charitable giving are small. This paper seeks to explain this apparent contradiction with the hypotheses that men have more resources and more social capital than women, which compensates for their lower level of motivation. The paper tests these hypotheses using data from the 1995 Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) survey. The data show partial support for these …

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer
Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer
Nancy J. Knauer
The approximately two million gay and lesbian elders in the United States are an underserved and understudied population. At a time when gay men and lesbians enjoy an unprecedented degree of social acceptance and legal protection, many elders face the daily challenges of aging isolated from family, detached from the larger gay and lesbian community, and ignored by mainstream aging initiatives. Drawing on materials from law, history, and social theory, this book integrates practical proposals for reform with larger issues of sexuality and identity. Beginning with a summary of existing demographic data and offering a historical overview of pre-Stonewall views …
