Facing Philadelphia: The Social Functions Of Silhouettes, Miniatures, And Daguerreotypes, 1760-1860, Anne Ayer Verplanck

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In 1807, Charles Fraser lauded fellow miniature artist Edward Greene Malbone's ability to produce "such striking resemblances, that they will never fail to perpetuate the tenderness of friendship, to divert the cares of absence, and to aid affection in dwelling on those features and that image which death has forever wrested from it." The explanations traditionally given for the commissioning of portraits--the perpetuation of family or institutional memory--correspond with Fraser's comments. Yet these explanations rarely incorporate the social context: the communities in which images were produced and the individual, familial, or group meanings of portraits.;"Facing Philadelphia: The Social Functions of …

"The Road To Ruins And Restoration": Roland W Robbins And The Professionalization Of Historical Archaeology, Donald Walter Linebaugh

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Roland W. Robbins helped to pioneer the profession of historical archaeology. as the discipline professionalized, he found himself increasingly excluded. This study analyzes Robbins's career within the context of the disciplines of archaeology and historic preservation and considers the professionalization process, current cultural resource management practice, the value of early data, and the importance of public archaeology.;The study also explores archaeology as Robbins's solution to his long personal crisis of vocation. He reacted to his coming of age during the Depression by searching for personal foundations and also responded to larger cultural needs, including a quest for the roots of …

From Promised Lands To Promised Landfill: The Iconography Of Oregon's Twentieth-Century Utopian Myth, Jeffry Lloyd Uecker May 1995

From Promised Lands To Promised Landfill: The Iconography Of Oregon's Twentieth-Century Utopian Myth, Jeffry Lloyd Uecker

Dissertations and Theses

The state of Oregon often has been viewed as a utopia. Figures of speech borrowed from the romantic sublime, biblical pilgrimage, economic boosterism, and millenialist fatalism have been used to characterize it. The visual arts also have responded to Oregon's utopian myth. During the nineteenth century, the landscape was a primary focus for utopian art. In the twentieth century, past human achievements, recreation, agriculture, and industry have joined the environment as themes which inspire utopian imagery. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that twentieth-century art that responds to Oregon's utopian myth has given rise to an iconography which …

The Chimney Fireplace In Colonial Virginia, Catherine Howe Grosfils Apr 1988

The Chimney Fireplace In Colonial Virginia, Catherine Howe Grosfils

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The study of an architectural feature, the chimney fireplace, suggests changing social patterns in late colonial Virginia society. An examination of fireplace equipment in 175 room-by-room inventories, together with evidence from surviving buildings and documentary sources, reveals changes in chimney fireplaces which in turn signal deep-seated changes within this colonial society. To place the Virginia chimney within its broader context, a brief history of the chimney fireplace precedes the study of changing construction materials, fuel and fireplace equipment, and heated and unheated rooms. The social significance of the chimney fireplace, a status symbol in colonial Virginia, is discussed with relation …

Historical Archaeology Possibilities For Arkansas, Julia Gray Jan 1985

Historical Archaeology Possibilities For Arkansas, Julia Gray

Honors Theses

Despite early examples of historical archaeology in North America, the field did not gain formal status until the mid-1960s. Since that time there has been continual debate as to what historical archaeology actually is, what it does or what it should do. To understand this debate, it is first necessary to examine some early orientations of the discipline.

Dissident Artists' Associations Of Germany 1892-1912, Mary Jo Eberspacher Jan 1984

Dissident Artists' Associations Of Germany 1892-1912, Mary Jo Eberspacher

Masters Theses

With the end of the Franco-Prussian War on January 18, 1871, the German Empire under the leadership of the Hohenzollern king, William of Prussia, was proclaimed in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Now Emperor Wilhelm I, Otto von Bismarck, his chancellor, and their staff as federal executives of the Empire possessed important legislative and economic powers. However, the individual states retained rights in some areas such as: education, health services, police protection and some powers of taxation, and in some instances, there was a distrust of the newly organized federal institutions. Consequently, this states' rights concept seemed to have …

The Renascence Of Classical Thought And Form In The Carolingian Period, Sara James Laster Jan 1983

The Renascence Of Classical Thought And Form In The Carolingian Period, Sara James Laster

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The political stability established under the rule of Charlemagne (768-814) was conducive to the flourishing of the simultaneous resurgence of art and learning. Inspired by the achievements of the Roman Empire, Charlemagne wished to give his subjects a feeling of spiritual unity, a sense of continuity with the past, and an enhanced intellectual life. The classical intellectual tradition is traced from ancient times to the Carolingian present to demonstrate that classicism was a continuum. The thesis examines the classical tradition in the intellectual life of the Carolingian period, its conscious rejuvenation in the figurative arts, and its manifestation in the …

Neoplatonism And The Florentine Renaissance, Donald L. De Merchant Jan 1972

Neoplatonism And The Florentine Renaissance, Donald L. De Merchant

All Master's Theses

This thesis demonstrates the correspondence between the visual arts and the literary sources of a given period in art history. During the Florentine Renaissance this correspondence lay between the Neoplatonism of Marsilio Picino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and the Visual art of the predominant artists; specifically, Sandro Botticelli and Michelangelo Buonarrotti. The impulse that is common to these creative minds is the Neoplatonic conception or the visual image. It is through a study or this tacit dimension that we are able to some extent to view the meaning of Renaissance art.

Prometheus In Sound : One Hundred Years Of Musical Adaptations Of The Myth Of Prometheus: Beethoven, Shubert, Liszt, Wolf, Parry, Fauré And Scriabin, Lurene Mattson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Promethean characteristics of contemporary young iconoclasts as they have expressed disapproval of the society which they have inherited and in which they feel entrapped prompted this study. Our interest here lies with the nature of the dissatisfaction rather than with ways of expressing it. If follows that out concern is primarily with the gift of Prometheus - the fire rather than with the rebellion and defiance associated with the demigod who took action against the tyranny of Zeus.

The Silversmiths Of Old Detroit, Walter E. Simmons Ii Jan 1969

The Silversmiths Of Old Detroit, Walter E. Simmons Ii

Wayne State University Theses

The history of the decorative arts in the United States has been related by many authors, but has always been concerned almost entirely with objects produced in the Eastern portion of the country. In areas such as Detroit that were not directly connected with the seventeenth and eighteenth-century settlements on the East Coast, little basic research has been accomplished. It will be the purpose of this writer to discuss one area of the decorative arts, silver, in depth, with the hope that the reader already cognizant in the field in the Eastern United States may be made aware of the …

A Study Of The Economic Factors Of The Tennessee Valley Authority, Judy Branch

Honors Theses

The story of the Tennessee Valley Authority is a story about a great American river basin; it is a story about water and soils and forests on mountain slopes; it is a story about people who grow cotton and corn, milk dairy cows, cut timber, and work as clerks in country stories; it is a story of local government, community institutions, and a thousand facets of private economic enterprise all working together in developing and using the natural resources of a region; it is a story about the application of large-scale planning and coordination in the solution of problems; it …
