Cuba, Social Policy At A Crossroads: Maintaining Priorities, Transforming Practice, Miren Uriarte
Cuba, Social Policy At A Crossroads: Maintaining Priorities, Transforming Practice, Miren Uriarte
Gastón Institute Publications
From the beginning of the Cuban revolution in 1959, the model of social development has underscored equity across society and universal access. Full responsibility rests on government to fund and deliver social entitlements. These values have framed the development and implementation of social policy during the last 40 years. During this time Cuba has instituted free and universally accessible health care and education and has built on its formerly weak pension system to develop a universal and government sponsored one.
Cuba's safety net of benefits includes protection of workers' employment and housing, food subsidies, utilities and other necessities, and mechanisms …

Bowling Green In Vintage Postcards, Jonathan Jeffrey
Bowling Green In Vintage Postcards, Jonathan Jeffrey
SCL Faculty and Staff Book Gallery
Bowling Green in Vintage Postcards is an engaging collection designed to entertain, educate, and enthrall history buffs, residents, and visitors alike with scenes of Bowling Green of yesterday. When long hunters paused along the banks of the Barren River in 1776, little did they realize that this beautiful, varied landscape would one day boast a thriving city. Today, the city is hailed as the educational, retail, and commercial hub of South Central Kentucky. Preserved in this photo journal is the area’s rich and vibrant past. Showcased are things unique to the region—horses, tobacco, strawberries, building stone, Corvettes, and Western Kentucky …

Hockey In Sweden And Finland: The European Game Is Better, Richard C. Crepeau
Hockey In Sweden And Finland: The European Game Is Better, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It was just about a year ago that I sat in a bar in Halifax and listened to a former Canadian hockey player explain that the European game, sans red line, was not a more open offensive style of hockey than that played in North America. After watching the tremendous hockey on display at the Olympic games last February I doubted the validity of the analysis. Over the last week after seeing two games, one in Sweden and one in Finland, I am even more skeptical of those defending the red line.

The English Primeirship: My Introduction To The Beautiful Game In England, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Outlined on a blue-gray October sky, or was it a September sky? Actually it was both and it was football. The four horsemen of Notre Dame were nowhere to be seen nor was Grantland Rice. It was English Premiership football and now after attending two games and watching others on television I am beginning to get a feel for this sport that makes Americans yawn and the world go into a frenzy.
