South Pacific Cultures And The Concept And Practice Of History, Daniel Reynaud Oct 2016

South Pacific Cultures And The Concept And Practice Of History, Daniel Reynaud

Daniel Reynaud

The practice of history is often assumed to be transparent and universal, but in fact it is a highly specialised phenomenon which exists only in certain societies. This raises problems for those writing about cultures where the practice of history has not traditionally existed, one such region being the South Pacific. A better understanding of the oral nature of Pacific societies and the way in which this affects one’s understanding of the past will be helpful to the historian of this region, and others like it.

"The ‘Spanish Jewish Project:’ Reciprocity In An Age Of Westernization”, Aviva Ben-Ur Dec 2015

"The ‘Spanish Jewish Project:’ Reciprocity In An Age Of Westernization”, Aviva Ben-Ur

Aviva Ben-Ur

This chapter explores the historical origins and development of the "Spanish Jewish Project," a movement to recast Jews of Iberian origin as "Spanish Jews" (judíos españoles). The movement emerged during the Hispano-African War (1859-1860) and sparked the imagination of a small but influential group of Ladino-speaking Jews and Spanish Christian liberal politicians, journalists, and intellectuals critical of their country's history and politics and eager to recapture the economic ascendancy of the Spanish Empire. Although the "Spanish Jewish Project" could not have materialized outside this political and economic context, the connective power of language was at the heart of …

History Of The Blues, Dan Rager Dec 2014

History Of The Blues, Dan Rager

Dan Rager

This all inclusive History of the Blues introduction begins as early as 1400, when the first global trading routes began. Two early maps are enclosed from this period showing the direction and locations from which people, food and supplies were moved.

This research presentation illustrates African tribes such as the Arada, Dahomey and Fulani who sang music in their daily rituals and ceremonies long before they were moved to other continents. Early developmental music elements are introduced including spirituals, worksongs, Scottish ballads, Methodist and Baptist hymns, call and response, guttural effects, interpolated vocality, falsetto and blue notes. All of these …

Empoderamiento - La Cultura, Reclamando Derechos E Identidad Y Expresión Poética En El Valle Del Chota, Hannah Roth Apr 2010

Empoderamiento - La Cultura, Reclamando Derechos E Identidad Y Expresión Poética En El Valle Del Chota, Hannah Roth

Hannah Roth

Fear And Projection As Root Causes Of War, And The Archetypal Energies "Trust" And "Peace" As Antidotes, Carroy U. Ferguson Sep 2009

Fear And Projection As Root Causes Of War, And The Archetypal Energies "Trust" And "Peace" As Antidotes, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

I want to use this opportunity to discuss a phenomenon that continues to plague the human experience. It is called the game of war. War is perhaps the deadliest game that humanity has created. The conflict itself represents what appears to be opposing views about the way things should be. Each side believes that it is right and that its actions are justified. Each side therefore seeks to impose its views on the other or to defend its views against the other. Each side fears the other as an enemy and each side projects its fears onto its perceived “enemy.”

We Speak And Write This Language Against Our Will’: Jews, Hispanics, And The Dilemma Of Ladino-Speaking Sephardim In Early 20th Century New York", Aviva Ben-Ur Dec 1997

We Speak And Write This Language Against Our Will’: Jews, Hispanics, And The Dilemma Of Ladino-Speaking Sephardim In Early 20th Century New York", Aviva Ben-Ur

Aviva Ben-Ur

This article explores interactions of Puerto Ricans and Spanish expats with Ladino-speaking Ottoman Jews (Sephardim) in New York during the first half of the twentieth century, as reported in the U.S. Ladino press. These immigrant periodicals demonstrate that Ladino and Spanish were for the most part mutually intelligible languages. Yes, Sephardim did not always welcome the overtures of Puerto Ricans or Spaniards,
