Empathy As A Hermeneutic Practice, Ellen S. More Mar 2008

Empathy As A Hermeneutic Practice, Ellen S. More

Ellen S. More

This essay will argue for the centrality of empathy in the doctor-patient relationship-as a core of ethically sound, responsible therapeutics. By "empathy," I intend an explicitly hermeneutic practice, informed by a reflexive understanding of patient and self. After providing an overview of the history of the concept of empathy in clinical medicine, I discuss current definitions and the use of Balint groups in residency training as a way to develop empathic competence in novice physicians.

Paradigm Shift - The Two Models., Dennis M. Richards

Dennis M Richards

The projected costs of trends expected to occur in Australian society over the next 40 years, particularly demographic changes, have the potential to threaten the fiscal sustainability of Australian Government finances. These costs particularly relate to the financing of health care, and the Government has called for new models of care to address this problem. This paper presents and discusses some historical models or paradigms of health care that may assist in understanding the current need for change and a possible solution.

The Starfish Principle: Drawing Purpose From South Africa's Aids Crisis, Lauren Vickroy Jan 2008

The Starfish Principle: Drawing Purpose From South Africa's Aids Crisis, Lauren Vickroy

Honors Theses

I had come to South Africa in search of a group, organization, or person whose story I could bring back home and use to forge a connection between Americans and the seemingly incomprehensible, hopeless, and overwhelming situation faced by the people of South Africa from the AIDS epidemic. The epidemic in South Africa is among the worst in the world as more people live with AIDS there than in any other country.
