'Conformists' And 'Church Trimmers': The Liturgical Legacy Of Restoration Anglicanism, John Ramsbottom
John D. Ramsbottom
The attention paid to religion in recent accounts of Restoration England has had the refreshing result of adding complexity to the traditionally one-dimensional image of the established Church in this period. No longer is "Anglicanism" seen as synonymous with the reactionary creed of country gentlemen.
Presbyterians And 'Partial Conformity' In The Restoration Church Of England, John Ramsbottom
Presbyterians And 'Partial Conformity' In The Restoration Church Of England, John Ramsbottom
John D. Ramsbottom
In the early eighteenth century, the legacy of conflict among English Protestants found an outlet in the controversy over ‘occasional conformity’. During the years 1702–4, Tory backbenchers in the House of Commons introduced a series of bills designed to strengthen the Corporation and Test Acts (1661, 1673), which had required all officials of local government and holders of Crown appointments to adhere to the established Church of England. Since the passage of these legal tests, Protestant Nonconformists seeking office had circumvented their intent by taking communion in an Anglican parish as seldom as once a year, while attending meetings of …

The Jacobin Republic Under Fire : The Federalist Revolt In The French Revolution, Paul Hanson
The Jacobin Republic Under Fire : The Federalist Revolt In The French Revolution, Paul Hanson
Paul R. Hanson
"One of the central questions of the French Revolution is what happened to the country from the time the monarchy collapsed in the summer of 1791, when the prospects for popular democracy seemed brightest, to the Terror of 1793-94, when the Committee of Public Safety ruled by fiat and repression. A key moment during this interim period was the so-called Federalist Revolt, when four provincial cities - Caen, Bordeaux, Lyon, and Marseille - rebelled against the more radical revolutionaries in Paris threatening to plunge France into civil war. Over the years some very good work has been published on the …

Contesting The French Revolution, Paul Hanson
Paul R. Hanson
"This book presents an overview of what led up to this pivotal event, the turning points that shaped it, and its far-reaching effects, as well as examining the most significant historiographical debates about this period. Were the events of 1789 a social revolution or a political accident? Did they mark the rise of industrial capitalism or the birth of modern democracy? Was the Reign of Terror a response to foreign war and domestic resistance or the product of Jacobin ideology? Paul Hanson offers an engaging analysis of these debates, showing us how historical interpretation of the French Revolution has been …

The French Revolution remains one of the most examined events in world history. Most historians would argue that it was the first "modern" revolution, an event so momentous that it gave the word revolution its current connotation of a political and/or social upheaval that marks a decisive break with the past and moves a society in a forward or progressive direction.- WorldCat

The Dutch Black Legend, Carmen Nocentelli

English “Hollandophobia” is usually understood as a function or reflection of the rivalries that characterized Anglo-Dutch relations during the seventeenth century. Working against such a circumscribed understanding, this essay contends that Hollandophobia is best thought of as a “Dutch Black Legend”—that is, as a deliberate repetition of the Hispanophobic topoi known as the Spanish Black Legend. Only by acknowledging the intimate relationship between these two phenomena can we make sense of Hollandophobia’s peculiar features while discerning how this discourse helped construct what the English took to be proper Europeanness.

Review Of Michael Ostling, Between The Devil And The Host: Imagining Witchcraft In Early Modern Poland. Oxford University Press, 2011, For Polin/American Association For Polish Jewish Studies, Magda Teter
Magda Teter
Witches and witchcraft have fascinated not only the people of the premodern era, but also modern scholars who produced a tremendous amount of scholarship that has covered not only a large geographic area but also a wide variety of topics related to this subject in European history. Scholars have studied the legal and cultural underpinnings of witch-hunts; records of witch trials and works on witchcraft have served scholars as sources for the history of women and gender and the history of folk medical practices in the premodern era. Anyone interested in the history of witchcraft and magic in Europe can …

Schooling And Society, Joanne Schneider

A much repeated truism credits nineteenth century Germany, especially Prussia, with the most advanced public education system in Europe. Karl Schleunes's Schooling and Society examines this notion by exploring the politics of education not only in Prussia, but also Bavaria. What emerges is an informative discussion of how the fortunes of public school reform were tied to various government leaders' goals for education, in association with the wider political and social scene.

"They Have Travailed Into A Wrong Latitude:" The Laws Of England, Indian Settlements, And The British Imperial Constitution 1726-1773, Arthur Fraas
Arthur Mitchell Fraas
In the mid-eighteenth century the British Crown claimed a network of territories around the globe as its "Empire." Through a close study of law and legal instutions in Bombay, Madras, Calcutta, as well as London, this dissertation examines what it meant to be a part of that Empire. These three cities on the Indian subcontinent were administered by the English East India Company and as such have often seemed abberant or unique to scholars of eighteenth-century empire and law. This dissertation argues that these Indian cities fit squarely within an imperial legal and governmental framework common to the wider British …

Nationalists Who Feared The Nation: Adriatic Multi-Nationalism In Habsburg Dalmatia, Trieste, And Venice, Dominique Reill
Dominique Kirchner Reill
We can often learn as much from political movements that failed as from those that achieved their goals. Nationalists Who Feared the Nation looks at one such frustrated movement: a group of community leaders and writers in Venice, Trieste, and Dalmatia during the 1830s, 40s, and 50s who proposed the creation of a multinational zone surrounding the Adriatic Sea. At the time, the lands of the Adriatic formed a maritime community whose people spoke different languages and practiced different faiths but identified themselves as belonging to a single region of the Hapsburg Empire. While these activists hoped that nationhood could …

In June of 1996, the Hungarian Parliament passed a law that made Imre Nagy the Martyred Prime Minister of the Hungarian Nation. Nagy had been the Prime Minister of Hungary during the ill-fated Hungarian Revolution of 1956. His refusal to step down from his post in favor of Janos Kadar after the successful Soviet military intervention that began on November 4, 1956 had led to his condemnation as a traitor and executed on June 16, 1958.

French Caribbeans In Africa: Diasporic Connections And Colonial Administration, 1880-1939, Veronique Helenon
Veronique Helenon
This is the first book-length study of the French Caribbean presence in Africa, and serves as a unique contribution to the field of African Diaspora and Colonial studies. By using administrative records, newspapers, and interviews, Véronique Hélénon explores the French Caribbean presence in the colonial administration in Africa before World War II. The phenomenon of this colonial administration is an especially productive site for understanding the complex relations established both within the African Diaspora and with the French colonial power.
Putting "Blood Libel" In Historical Context, Magda Teter
Putting "Blood Libel" In Historical Context, Magda Teter
Magda Teter
When Sarah Palin used the term “blood libel” in response to the shooting in Arizona that left six people dead and severely injured others, including Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords, she stirred a controversy. To defend herself in the midst of the controversy, Palin defined the term “blood libel” very broadly as “being falsely accused of having blood on your hands.” Despite her broad definition, blood libel is a term that refers very specifically to the historical accusation that Jews killed Christian children to obtain their blood. A false accusation, to be sure, but one with a long and painful history, …
