All Finding Aids
This collection consists of an unbound class memorial which has been kept in its original order. The original letters have been removed for archival preservation and replaced with copies. Almost all letters are written from Gettysburg College students stationed in stateside military training camps between 1917 and 1919 and addressed to Lybarger or "Brothers of Phi Sigma." Review Essay: Reflections On Three Novels Of Carol Williams, Kristina Marcy
Review Essay: Reflections On Three Novels Of Carol Williams, Kristina Marcy
Swiss American Historical Society Review
The writer Jean Cocteau once descriped the fiction that he produced as "des mensonges vrais." If we agree that his description is apt, that indeed all fiction consists of true lies, then historical fiction might be considered a special genre , since it tries to blend true lies with genuine truths. Attempting to present simultaneously both the historical truth and a fictional narrative that brings that truth to life is a less straightforward task than it might seem, because the novelist and the historian must write at cross-purposes: the former is concerned with the story of individual lives, the latter …

The Special Operations Executive (Soe) In Austria, 1940-1945, Gerald Steinacher
The Special Operations Executive (Soe) In Austria, 1940-1945, Gerald Steinacher
Department of History: Faculty Publications
In January 1941, Great Britain’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) defined its policy on Austria with two objectives: (1) to assist in the disintegration of the Third Reich by fostering the soon to be expected all-out revolutionary and separatist uprising in Austria; and (2) to bring about the “restoration of Austria as a national unit” within the framework of a central European federation. In short, the hopes and aspirations of the SOE in the Austrian resistance against Nazi Germany were flying high. Five years later, in March 1946, Britain’s political representative in Vienna, William B. Mack, summarized the history of the …

" ... Verlangt Das Gesunde Volksempfinden Die Schwerste Strafe ...": Das Sondergericht Für Die Operationszone Alpenvorland 1943-1945. Ein Vorbericht, Gerald Steinacher
Department of History: Faculty Publications

Travellers And The Industrial Revolution: Observations Of Cornwall, Cynthia Lane
Travellers And The Industrial Revolution: Observations Of Cornwall, Cynthia Lane
Theses : Honours
The following dissertation is a "contribution to contemporary debates about the industrial revolution and the perpetuation of 'differcnce'."1 It covers the era of Cornish industrialisation and the attendant socio-economic and cultural changes from the emergence of copper mining in the 1690s to the eve of its crash in 1866, through the observations of a selection of contemporary travellers/writers. It explores the image of Com wall through West Barbary versus Industrial Civilisation, and compares the county's processes of industrialisation with the canonical industrial revolution of the midlands and the north of England. Cornwall is examined as an example of the …

The Bridge
1£ you were to peruse the pages of Danneuirke, the Danish language weekly, for the first half of the year 1923, you would find the pages filled with articles pro and con concerning the pastoral pledge (praesteloflet). The pastoral pledge is not to be confused with the pastoral vow to remain true to the Orristian faith. No one objected to this. The pledge, on the other hand, was a promise to remain true to the canonical books of Lutheranism. Some had refused to take this pledge and had, accordingly, been denied ordination. This matter was to be dealt with at …

Emigration From Jystrup And Valsolille, Pia Viscor
The Bridge
Traveling eastwards across the Danish island of Sjrelland, you turn off superhighway E66 at Ringsted and take highway Al towards Roskilde. Soon, you see a sign pointing to Jystrup and take the short side road to that village. The rolling countryside is idyllic, dotted with small lakes and ponds, tidy farmland alternating with forest. Jystrup lies on the eastern shore of a lake, with the church and village of Valselille on the opposite shore. On a peninsula at the northern end of the lake are ruins of Skjoldenres castle, beseiged and conquered by King Valdemar Atterdag in the mid-fourteenth century. …
The Bridge Builders Of Luther Memorial, Wilber J. Williamson
The Bridge Builders Of Luther Memorial, Wilber J. Williamson
The Bridge
The congregation of Luther Memorial Church in Des Moines, Iowa, celebrated its centennial anniversary in 1999, during which time there was a good deal of reflection concerning the historical roots and activities of the church during the preceding one hundred years. Much of the early history of the congregation was closely associated with Grand View College. During the first decades, the school provided worship facilities as well as the pastor services for the emerging congregation. With financial support from the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, a building was erected in 1917, which has served as the home for the congregation since …

The Bridge
Kristian Pedersen 0stergaard (Ostergaard in English) was born 1855 in Volstrup, Hjerm parish, near the little town of Struer on the southern shore of the Limfjord. He grew up on the family farm and, like many other Danish farm boys of that day, went to work as a hired hand after eight years of schooling and confirmation. As a farmhand, he spent all of his spare time in reading. At an early age, he began to teach in private schools, first on Fyn and later on Langeland, though he had no formal training as a teacher. Time and again, he …
