Only the chirping of the chickadees all around the passing farm fields broke the silence of the evening as we neared the place of our destination -- the village of Bern, Kansas.

It all started in June 1987. Michigan Today had arrived in the mail, a University of Michigan newspaper that carried some pictures of wonderful Byzantine mosaics. They had been photographed in the monastery of St. Catherine on Mt. Sinai, a community that had survived some fifteen hundred years and harbors numerous treasures brought there to be hidden from the ravages of turbulent times.

Fred Anderegg's conversation is full of colorful anecdotes, which is to be expected from a gregarious archeological photographer whose job has been to take the ideal picture, in less than ideal circumstances, all over the globe.

The 'Vie Chère' Riots Of 1911: Traditional Protests In Modern Garb, Paul R, Hanson
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
In the early evening hours of a warm September night sorne two thousand women gathered in front of a French dairy farm to the rallying cry, "We must have butter at 30 sous, or it will be revolution!"1 One might well guess that the date of this demonstration was 1789, or perhaps the tumultuous years of social protest and food riots that heralded the coming of the Second Republic and then the Second Empire. But the date is 1911 and the place is the small town of Somain located in the department of the Nord...

Hijalmar Petersen Of Minnesota: The Politics Of Provincial Independence, Gerald Rasmussen

It is not often that we have the pleasure of reviewing the biography of a politically prominent Danish-American; in this case Hjalmar Petersen of Minnesota. To our knowledge Petersen was the only Danish-born governer of any of the United States -- Minnesota. The fact alone creates some interest in Petersen among Americans of Danish descent and to the Danish American Heritage Society. But by and of itself that does not warrant a biography -- or a book review. But, make no mistake, the author, Steven Keillor has demonstrated convincingly that his biography of Hjalmar Petersen is warranted and a worthy …

Eighty years ago, on July 13, 1907, Helena residents picked up their newspaper, the Helena Independent and read these front-page headlines:
"PETER LARSON DIES AT HIS HOME IN HELENA."
"A CALAMITY TO THE WHOLE NORTHWEST."
"The Man Who at the Age of Twenty Was Still a Danish Peasant is Remembered by Thousands for His Benefactions" . . ."Contractor and Master Business Man."

Identifying Danish-American Folklife, Gregory Hansen

Danish-American ethnicity has traditionally been studied by examining the literature, religion, social and educational institutions, and business enterprises of Danes in America. In general researchers have looked to Fine Arts and Culture to understand the Danish ethnic identity. But examining only Culture and Art yields an incomplete understanding of culture and art. Danish ethnic culture in America consists primarily of the non-elitist traditions and arts of individuals' everyday lives rather than the contributions of the elite, and the discipline of folklore can provide a more complete concept of Danish heritage. Folklife studies involve the stages of identifying, documenting, interpreting, and …

R. B. Nielsen's Journey From Aarhus To Dannebrog, Harold Jensen
The Bridge
Many years ago, possibly when I was seventeen years of age, my grandfather, Rasmus B. Nielsen (affectionately called R.B.) asked me if I would write the account of his experiences as a young man emigrating from Denmark in 1878, with Dannebrog, Nebraska as his destination and future home. I said I would. We had several sessions at the kitchen table in his home near Nysted by Dannebrog, Nebraska. He sat in his captain's chair, and I in a straight-backed kitchen chair. He dictated in Danish while I jotted down what he said. I filed these notes and for some years …

The Bridge
These are some memories of a woman whose life spanned a whole century, from 1886 to 1986. As a Danish immigrant in Minneapolis, she saw the changes in the Danish community from the time when the newcomers clung to their heritage, until today, two or three generations later when almost no one speaks in the mother tongue. Her special gift for story telling, her acting ability, and her amazing memory of poetry made her a very unusual, lovable person. Her outgoing personality and friendliness touched the lives of countless people.

From Scandinavia To America: Proceedings From A Conference Held At Gi. Holtegaard, Peter L. Petersen, Reviewer
The Bridge
In early September 1983, scholars from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the United States gathered at Gammel Holtegaard, north of Copenhagen, for a three-day conference on Scandinavian emigration to the United States. Because a majority of the papers presented at the conference deal with elements of the Danish experience, readers of The Bridge should welcome this belated publication of the proceedings made possible by a grant from the Danish Research Council for the Humanities.

From 'The Help Of Grave And Modest Women' To 'The Care Of Men Of Sense': The Transition From Female Midwifery To Male Obstetrics In Early Modern England, Karen L. Smith Adams
Dissertations and Theses
Until the sixteenth century, childbirth in England was the exclusive domain of women and was orchestrated by the female midwife. By the end of the seventeenth century, university-educated and church-approved male physicians were systematically beginning to usurp the midwife's role in the lying-in room and to gradually assume authority and power over the process of childbirth. Ultimately doctordominated childbirth threatened, and in some places accomplished, the displacement of the midwife. No one factor was responsible for the shift in delivery room personnel nor was the transition from female midwives to male obstetricians a "natural" one. This thesis looks at three …

Patterns In Creativity : An Examination Of Viennese Culture And Politics At The Turn Of The Century, Allen Nolan Hauser
Dissertations and Theses
This examination explores the Viennese cultural milieu at the turn of the century in an effort to show the commonality of backgrounds and interests among those who created the culture during that period. In this the study aims at illustrating the similarities among those artists, intellectuals, and politicians in spite of the fact that their ideas helped lay the basis for the breakdown in integration of twentieth century culture which was illustrated by Carl E. Schorske in his Fin-De-Siecle Vienna: Politics and Culture. All this is in pursuance of the overall issue of the origin of the ideas which have …

A Journey With Obstacles, Jens Jensen
The Bridge
Jens Jensenwas born May 2, 1892 on a farm outside of Olgod, Denmark in central Jutland. When he was nine years old his mother died (of pregnancy toxemia), leaving five children. Jens Jensen then lived with his neighbors and relatives Kirstin and Hans Christiansen. He worked on the farm which required much labor since the Christianden family took on, in addition, the operation and management of a nearby creamery (Lindbjerg).
