Thoughts On Creative Teaching In The Undergraduate Classroom, Jeffrey Shepherd Dec 2006

Thoughts On Creative Teaching In The Undergraduate Classroom, Jeffrey Shepherd

Jeffrey P Shepherd

This article discusses several innovative approaches to teaching U.S. History in undergraduate classrooms. It argues that history teachers can engage students in dialogues about the past if they use more interactive forms of pedagogy. Role-playing, historical re-enactment, debate, and other creative formats will simultaneously enrich the classroom experience and strengthen students critical thinking and writing skills. Teachers interested in content do not have to sacrifice "the facts" for dynamic and stimulating--even exciting--approaches to U.S. history.

Adam Arenson

Before public libraries became common in the United States, both elite and striving men sought out social libraries to read business newspapers, attend lectures, appreciate art and good company, and generally learn or relish in respectability. For single male clerks living in rented rooms, the library served as a crucial "third place," away from home and work, where sociability and education could flourish. This chapter describes how elements of the private library, the parlor, and the bookstore informed the furnishing and design of the social library. It reveals how the spaces were intended to be utilized--and what legacies remained for …

Direito À Informação Ou Deveres De Protecção Informativa Do Estado?,, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Do Constitucionalismo Brasileiro: Uma Introdução Histórica (1824-1988), Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

It is not usual to write a constitutional history from the view point of a foreigner. This is a essai of a glimpse of Brazilian constitutional history from the perspective of a Portuguese, descending from Bazilians, descending from Portuguese. In spite of those circunstances, of course the aim was always the possible objectivity in History and in Constitutional Law History.

Feminist Pedagogy: Diversity And Praxis In A University Context, Ann M. Oberhauser Dec 2006

Feminist Pedagogy: Diversity And Praxis In A University Context, Ann M. Oberhauser

Ann Oberhauser

As dynamic today as it was in its first decade, feminist geography continues to undergo significant change. Shifts in institutions of higher education have been fueled by a set of economically driven principles that corresponds to a corporate model of rewards and market-based learning outcomes (Dastree & Sparke, 2000). Feminist geographies challenge these developments in academia through analyses of, for example, hierarchical divisions of labor in the context of changing sociocultural and political-economic structures. This is part and parcel of an effort to transform patriarchal structures in, and the corporatization of, higher education (McDowell, 1990). As we know, feminist course …
