Dear Members of the SAHS,

Membership is a key concern to us and unfortunately this year we have lost three members here in Switzerland. One due to death, Dr. Lucie Zehnder; one member, Anselm Zurfluh, has asked to be taken off the list, and The Institut des Suisse Dans le Monde is closed. Christine von Graffenried has cancelled membership as of 2023 so that will be reflected in 2023.

This year the Swiss members of the SAHS held their traditional meeting on Saturday, October 9, 1999 in St. Gallen's Washington House. Despite the first signs of winter - windy conditions and low temperatures characteristic for the region at this time - Dr. Marcel Mayer of the City Archive of St. Gallen first took some thirty guests on a tour of St. Gallen's merchant houses typical of the City's 19th and 20th centuries' textile industry. Promptly at ten a.m. President Karl J. Niederer called the business meeting to order. He noted that since the Swiss Town House had been sold, this was the first time that we have met in another New York City location. He expressed the thanks of the society to Rosa Schupbach, a member of the Board of Advisors, for having found the location in the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church and for having so efficiently taken care of the local arrangements. He also acknowledged Richard Frey of the church staff for his help.

Niederer called the meeting to order at 10: 10 a.m. The members were greeted by the Swiss honorary consul, Franz Portmann, who invited them to visit the Swiss consulate between 6th and 7th Streets, time permitting. Next Eric Pumroy, director of the Balch Institute of Ethnic Studies, welcomed those present and reminded them that this was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Institute. The Attache Culturel of the Swiss Embassy, Walter Haffner, welcomed the members of our society to the Swiss Embassy. He was followed by our president Erdmann Schmocker who greeted the attendees to the business meeting. He expressed the society's appreciation to Ambassador Carlo Jagmetti for hosting the meeting and for graciously inviting the participants to be his guests at lunch.

President Erdmann Schmocker greeted the members assembled for the business meeting at 9:30 a.m. Mr. Lukas Gloor moved and Mr. Peter Sehlinger seconded the acceptance of the minutes of the Philadelphia meeting on October 9, 1973. This motion passed unanimously. Mr. Schmocker then asked for a moment of silence in memory of the late Helen Muller of Stamford, Connecticut.

The Annual Meeting of the Swiss American Historical Society will be held this year on Saturday, October 25, 1980, at the Kiva Auditorium of Temple University, located at the northeast corner of Broad Street and Columbia Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Professor Samuel Lauchli, a faculty member of Temple University's Departrrent of Religion and Honorary Consul for Switzerland, and Mrs. Theodore J. Finckh who has played a decisive role in the affairs of the SAHS for many years, will make the necessary arrangements. Their generous and indispensable help is gratefully acknowledged.

In the early summer of 1978 Marianne Burkhard, of the University of Illinois, circulated a questionnaire among the members of the Swiss American Historical Society designed to probe their opinions regarding the future course of the Society. The varied responses she received run the gamut of strong support for new directions to emphatic warnings against becoming involved in expensive programs or diluting the purpose and goals of the Society. The eleventh annual meeting of the reactivated SAHS was held on December 28 , 1974, in Evanston , Illinois . Nine people attended the business meeting, some fifteen members were at the luncheon and at the afternoon session. The meeting was held in the pleasant atmosphere of the Orrington Hotel in Evanston, owned by the family Zweifel from New Glarus. Mr. Rolf Born, Consul General of Switzerland in Chicago, invited the assembled members to a cocktail hour before lunch which greatly added to the pleasantness of the occasion.

The book is a facsimile reproduction of the 1833 edition, a small volume appealing in appearance and pleasant to hold. It describes, in the form of a diary and letters, the experiences of a group of Swiss who emigrated to the prairies of Illinois. Two-thirds of it are devoted to the Journey, the ordeal of "getting there": from Sursee to Base l, through France to Havre, on a three-master to New York and over rivers and canals to St. Louis, Missouri the last stepping stone efore settling in Illinois.

From August 17 to 19, 1973, many Swiss living abroad met in St. Gallen under the auspices of the secretariat of the Swiss Abroad, a branch of the New Helvetic Society. The topic of this year's plenary session was of great interest: "Swiss Societies and Institutions Abroad and Their Activitiies." A wide range of such institutions was discussed by speakers who were all activly involved in their maintenance and development.

In April we received the sad news of the death of Mario Muschi. The editor of the San Francisco-based Swiss Journal, Mr. Muschi had been a member of our society for many years and had served on our Board of Advisors. His obituary by his son Achille Muschi, reprinted in the Amerikanische Schweizer Zeitung of April 18, 1973, states that Mario Muschi was born in Tesserete (Ticino) in 1893 and came to this country in 1915. He spent his life in working for his beloved Swiss Journal with which he s erved the many Swiss on the West Coast. The …

The family of Hans Ulrich Baggens toss of Rafz, Switzerland, arrived in Pennsylvania in 1743. Two m9re immigrations of Baggenstoss families from Rafz followed - one settled in Minnesota (1879); the other in Tennessee (1895). All appear related to the same Swiss ancestry. The earliest record of the name is found in 1401.
