"The Worry That You Are Yourself": Darl's Unforgivable Neurodiversity In As I Lay Dying, Neal Hallgarth Jan 2013

"The Worry That You Are Yourself": Darl's Unforgivable Neurodiversity In As I Lay Dying, Neal Hallgarth

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"This paper is concerned with the character of Darl Bundren and the repeated motif of madness in William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. Possible psychiatric explanations for Darl's madness, including linguistic evidence for his psychotic breakdown, are explored. The paper does not agree with the critical use of words such as "insane" or "crazy" as the book itself questions the verity of such labels. Critical analyses concerning Darl tend to be sympathetic but use derogatory language when defending the character. Articles related to the relatively new idea of neurodiversity will counter the backhanded sympathy with which the critics regard Darl. …

"Rosa Alchemica," "The Tables Of The Law," And "Adoration Of The Magi," Edited And With An Introduction, Brady J. Peneton

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"This volume contains an introduction to William Butler Yeats' early occult short stories "Rosa Alchemica," "The Tables of the Law," and "The Adoration of the Magi." Panned by critics over the last century, the three stories contained in this volume are both controversial and difficult. The introduction explains the language of occultists and alchemists in terms of Jungian psychology and describes how alchemical doctrine influenced Yeats' writing and the largely alchemical mythology contained in A Vision. Yeats' desire for apocalypse is identified as a desire for the general population to see the divine through symbol and to discover the psychological …

The Ogbanje In Little Bee By Chris Cleave, Courtney A. Harler

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"In Chris Cleave's 2008 novel Little Bee, he offers readers a literary representation of the Nigerian spirit-child for the purpose of political and post-colonial examination. Cleave's intentions are revealed through a full study of this traditional Nigerian concept. The Nigerian spirit-child, known as the ogbanje in the lgbo language and the abiku in the Yoruba language of Western Nigeria, is imprisoned in an endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The concept of the ogbanje-abiku is indeed related to the overall concept of reincarnation, but it differs in the sense that the child who is unduly linked to the spirit …

"This analysis will examine authenticity through the conflated elements of identity, home, ceremony, and storytelling in Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony and N. Scott Momaday's House Made of Dawn. Coming home for characters Tayo and Abel involves redirecting of isolated individual energy to the whole community, enabling them to return to their estranged homes. Traumatic experiences in the war have alienated these men to the point where they can no longer claim place, identity or self. The author analyzes the ways in which these men have become "un-homed" as well as the various forces that "home" them. This thesis, on a …
