Verse Satire Between 1798 And 1832 In Relation To The Romantic Movement, Marie Van Driel Oct 1944

Verse Satire Between 1798 And 1832 In Relation To The Romantic Movement, Marie Van Driel

English Language and Literature ETDs

Satire as a literary method is more apt to be associated by the student or critic of English literature with the neo-classical writers of the eighteenth century than with the romantics who followed. Indeed, the critical and intellectual attitude which produces satire was the temper of the neo-classical writers against whom the romantics were in revolt, yet many of the romantics used satire with sufficient frequency to warrant our asking whether satire as used by the romanticists differs from that used in the preceding century, whether, therefore, there is a kind of satire which may be called romantic, and whether …

The Intellectual And Spiritual Development Of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jessie L. Boulter Oct 1944

The Intellectual And Spiritual Development Of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jessie L. Boulter

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the intellectual and spiritual development of Emerson. Intellectual development refers to the growth of Emerson's mind through his family and emotional experiences, his readings, his travels, and his contacts with his contemporaries. Spiritual development refers to the growth of Emerson's understanding of man's relationship to God and the universe and of his insight into the metaphysical, not only through the experiences which influenced his intellectual growth but also through his studies of nature. Since both his intellectual and spiritual development came from similar sources, the two should be considered as a unified …

Some Representative Realists In American Fiction, 1890 To 1910, Clara Morris Oct 1944

Some Representative Realists In American Fiction, 1890 To 1910, Clara Morris

English Language and Literature ETDs

During the closing years of the nineteenth century there appeared upon the American literary scene, suddenly and unannounced, a group of young writers and journalists who gave promise of a literary revolution. They evidenced no qualms in smashing traditional forms and accepted ideals. They wrote with impetuosity and confident ferocity. But although they have passed into comparative obscurity, these writers will be remembered because they were instrumental in opening the way for the naturalism and associated tendencies which predominate in the present era in American literature.

Literary Tendencies In The Short Story, Harper's Magazine, 1850-1870, Marguerite Leahy Aug 1944

Literary Tendencies In The Short Story, Harper's Magazine, 1850-1870, Marguerite Leahy

English Language and Literature ETDs

The short story is a peculiarly American contribution to the field of literature. Harper's New Monthly Magazine, while at the beginning presenting stories mainly from English authors, did not refuse them from other sources, and French as well as German writers were included among the contributors.

During the first decade covered by this study, the author [of a short story] was rarely mentioned, and a great deal of research was involved to ascertain this information. After 1860 due credit was given the author in every instance. Despite their many imperfections, these early stories did form a bridge from the …

Social Problems In The Fiction Of Benjamin Disraeli, Harriet Uhler Simpson Feb 1944

Social Problems In The Fiction Of Benjamin Disraeli, Harriet Uhler Simpson

English Language and Literature ETDs

The main purpose of this study is to present the political and social ideas which Benjamin Disraeli expressed through his fiction. His novels have been said to be a means whereby Disraeli clarified his ideas in his own mind before he attempted direct political or practical action. Since Disraeli was a statesman as well as a novelist, the question of whether or not, or to what extent, Disraeli's ideas were put into action is a more valid question, perhaps, than in the case of any other English author.

The Influence Of Machiavelli On Francis Bacon: A Critical Examination, Blanche E. Ferguson Jan 1944

The Influence Of Machiavelli On Francis Bacon: A Critical Examination, Blanche E. Ferguson

Graduate Thesis Collection

The association of the name of Francis Bacon with that of Niccolo Machiavelli is no novelty to the modern reader. But in most instances this association is brief and fleeting, possessed of a will-o'-the-wisp character that is at once unsatisfying and challenging. The natural conclusion to which one is tempted to leap is that Bacon, since he is the more recent in point of time, was influenced by the great Florentine in matters of philosophy and style. A second possibility is that both men were influenced by similar conditions of political and cultural backgrounds. A still further consideration lies in …

The Philosophy Of Life Reflected In The Poetry Of Emily Jane Bronte And Christina Georgina Rossetti, M. Ildefonse Wagner Jan 1944

The Philosophy Of Life Reflected In The Poetry Of Emily Jane Bronte And Christina Georgina Rossetti, M. Ildefonse Wagner

Master's Theses

The writer of this thesis became interested in the poetry of Christina Georgina Rossetti through the study of "The Blessed Damozel,” a poem by her brother Dante Gabriel. After receiving some helpful suggestions from her adviser, the writer decided to make a rather thorough and careful study of Miss Rossetti's poems. In the meantime, the adviser, Dr. Myrta E. McGinnis, head of the English Department, selected Dr. Clarice Short as director and guide for the study. Dr. Clarice Short suggested that the writer make an additional study of the poetry of Emily Jane Bronte to ascertain likenesses and unlikenesses in …
