The Myth Of Fanfiction: An Examination Of Two Deeply Connected Traditions Of Storytelling, Fionntan I. Ferris Mr.
The Myth Of Fanfiction: An Examination Of Two Deeply Connected Traditions Of Storytelling, Fionntan I. Ferris Mr.
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Fanfiction is an often dismissed medium of storytelling, however our investigation shows that it is deeply linked to the storytelling tradition of Classical mythology. Through the lens of classical reception studies we will examine the shared structures of these mediums as well as the deeper meaning they have and had to their audience in order to establish this deep connection. This paper will conclude with an investigation of why, despite their deep similarities, copyright law has led to fanfiction becoming derided while myth is placed on a pedestal.
Decolonizing Toronto Theatre, Hanna Shore
Decolonizing Toronto Theatre, Hanna Shore
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This research project, “Decolonizing Toronto Theatre,” examines how Soulpepper, a mainstream Toronto theatre company, and their collaboration with Native Earth Performing Arts are contributing to the equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization of Toronto theatre through their recent Indigenous productions: Kamloopa and Where the Blood Mixes. We watched, read, and analyzed both plays to explore how these two productions transform and redefine the intellectual, political, and artistic conventions of Anglo-Canadian theatre. Our analyses of these plays are informed by the various texts centred around Canadian Indigenous history and Indigenous theatre. We also used an ethnographic approach by talking to people …
The Black Artiste: Politization As Racialization, Matthew Dawkins
The Black Artiste: Politization As Racialization, Matthew Dawkins
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
The idea that the personal doubles as the political is a modern analysis of socio- political regimes, popularized by second-wave feminism in the 1960s. However, this understanding has become increasingly relevant for a number of ideologies due to the ways in which modern political frameworks (ie. campaigns, policies, legislation, etc.) continue to target marginalized groups while the global social consciousness demands that political leaders rectify social issues in political arenas.
In this research project, I challenge the relationship between the personal and the political for Black artists in order to examine the extent to which Black art is inherently political. …
Assessing Reading Comprehension And Memory Recall Of Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jasmeen Mander
Assessing Reading Comprehension And Memory Recall Of Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Jasmeen Mander
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This project examined the influence of background knowledge on reading comprehension and memory recall of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in comparison to typically developing children. Furthermore, the true or false scores and average story recalls of the two groups of children, ADHD and without ADHD were also compared. The participants varied in ages 9-14 years old and were assigned a self-paced reading task followed by 24 true or false questions and two memory recall questions. For both groups of children, the amount of background knowledge an individual conveyed did not correlate to their reading comprehension and memory recall. …

Taking Back Control: Memes, Trump, 4chan, Gamergate, And The Rise Of The Alt-Right, Cam Fediuk
Taking Back Control: Memes, Trump, 4chan, Gamergate, And The Rise Of The Alt-Right, Cam Fediuk
Western Research Forum
Background
My thesis’s impetus is the rise of reactionary discourse on the internet, collectively known as the alt-right. As with the traditional right, the alt-right is anti-feminist, anti-immigration, and anti-political-correctness, but unlike its predecessor, is also anti-establishment, anti-religion, pro-Donald Trump, and thoroughly engaged with and immersed in the meme-based political discourse of digital media.
Hypothesis
I argue against the cyber-utopianism proposed by Douglass Rushkoff and other early internet theorists; I argue that, while the internet has made memes central to political discourse, the rise of laissez-faire social media platforms has not made the digital generation more enlightened, or tolerant, …

FIMULAW
Diverse representation in picture books is important for the wellbeing of children and families; this includes LGBTQ+ representation, a frequently contested area of literature. Our poster identifies 33 of the most frequently recommended picture books with LGBTQ+ representations and reports on their inclusion in 40 selected Ontario Public Libraries. We then compared these results with five socioeconomic factors for each library: size of population served, the size of the print collection, the size of the materials budget, the average total median household income and the last decade of provincial election results for the riding in which the main branch of …
"Words, Words, Words": The Idea Of The Absurd As Method In Hamlet., Anthony Faber
"Words, Words, Words": The Idea Of The Absurd As Method In Hamlet., Anthony Faber
Modern Languages and Literatures Annual Graduate Conference
In this paper I explore the idea that Hamlet develops the notion of the absurd as a method with which to confront his world: however, as art imitates nature, Hamlet's discourse of "an antic disposition" suggests, that he in fact embodies the absurd as constituting a meaningless existence.
Class Movements In The New South Africa: Post-Colonial Politics, Neocolonialism, And Mimicry In Pieter-Dirk Uys’S Macbeki A Farce To Be Reckoned With, J. Coplen Rose
Modern Languages and Literatures Annual Graduate Conference
This paper uses Homi Bhabha’s theory of colonial mimicry to analyze Pieter-Dirk Uys’s MacBeki: A Farce to be Reckoned With. In doing so I posit MacBeki is a colonial mimic, a character who comically imitates European gestures and language. MacBeki’s behaviour throughout the play highlights the dangers of greed and corruption in post-apartheid South Africa and encourages the play’s audience to respond with ridiculing laughter. My paper concludes by arguing that Uys’s play should be read as a hybrid text that draws on European dramatic styles and South African political events, staging a critical response to national uncertainties ahead …

Writing, Resistance And History: Violent Rewriting In Postresistance African-American And Polish Prose, Agnieszka Herra
Research Day (Arts & Humanities, FIMS, and Education)
My core area of research is Polish and African-American prose fiction written during and after civil resistance movements in each respective culture. My main research question will be the extent to which literature in the postresistance period questions the events and the narratives that were part of uniting the society to participate in the civil resistance movement.

A Test Case In Comparing Textual Evidence With Evidence From Material Culture: Conceptions Of Valhǫll, Russell Poole
A Test Case In Comparing Textual Evidence With Evidence From Material Culture: Conceptions Of Valhǫll, Russell Poole
Research Day (Arts & Humanities, FIMS, and Education)
Medieval Icelandic manuscripts preserve poems that speak of a hall presided over by the warrior-god Óðinn (Odin) and populated by élite Viking warriors who have died gloriously in battle.
Viking-Age picture-stones (bildstenar) erected in memory of the dead on Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea, contain depictions of warriors being welcomed to a great hall.
How was this hall envisaged in the Viking Age? Would it have been conceived of as a typical Viking-Age building or as something more exotic?
This poster explores these questions.
