Effects Of The Writing Instructional Model With Integration Of Inquiry-Based Learning And Visual Literacy On 21st Century Skills Of Efl Learners, Patsawut Sukserm

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Although a body of research illustrates the potential of inquiry-based learning in promoting the 21st century skills among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students (AbuRezeq, 2018; Imansyan et al., 2019; Milatasari, 2013; Palupi et al., 2020; Tongjean et al., 2019), other studies have indicated its occasional failure in eliciting students’ engagement (Duschl & Wright, 1989; Gill, 2005), which affects students’ success in language learning. This results in the need to leverage other pedagogical strategies, including visual literacy, to increase the efficacy of inquiry-based learning (Gonzalez-Ledo, 2015; Maricimoi, 2017; Navidinia et al., 2018; Rokhaniyah, 2019, Sulastri, 2019; Tayib, 2015; Villasor, …

The Representation Of Animal And “Non-Human” Characters In Indra Sinha’S Animal’S People, Sirawit Sriphuthorn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This paper aims at examining the representation of Animal, the protagonist, and “non-human” characters in Indra Sinha’s Animal’s People (2007). It discusses various ways in which the socially constructed concepts of “humanity” and “animality” are called into question and strategically deployed in the portrayal of these characters. It argues that Sinha attempts to dismantle binary thinking which not only constitutes the distinction between the human and the animal but also underpins the West’s domination of the East. More specifically, the paper argues that Animal whose deformity is caused by exposure to the toxic gas suffers from alienation—both from himself and …

Environmental Ethics, Survival And Apocalypse: An Analysis Of Margaret Atwood’S Maddaddam Trilogy, Sarawut Kururatphan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis examines the connection of ethics and survival in the pre- and post-apocalyptic worlds in Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy: Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013). It investigates the author’s imaginings of a dystopian society marked by rampant technocratic capitalism and unchecked scientism in Oryx and Crake. Applying Murray Bookchin's social ecology to shed light on the root causes of the apocalypse, it argues that hierarchical ideology and diversiform inequality deeply rooted in society lead to warped ethics, affecting the crisis. This thesis also examines environmental ethics which is embedded in the belief …
