Literature in America has led an eventful career for almost three hundred years . There were first, the almost barren years of the early settlers, when the task of sustaining life left little leisure time for either reading or writing, and the lack of printing facilities discouraged the rearing of a literature. Among the literary pioneers who surmounted these difficulties were the Pur­itan historians, sermonists and poets.
