This Master’s thesis is concerned with analyzing key themes and ideas in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein through an existentialist lens which is made possible through a comparison to themes and ideas in Albert Camus’ The Stranger. I aim to make a contribution to my field by fulfilling a comparison that has long been made since the late 1960s when conversations about British Romanticism and Existentialism were still common. This research centers on big ideas about flowers, fruit, and growing up as themes that create a bridge between American, British, and South Korean Romanticism. Through comparatively analyzing Romantic elements in literary works across genres, the globe, and time periods—from poems, a short story, to popular contemporary music—this research will trace out the dimensions and contours of that bridge, which more and more people are crossing today than ever before as readers, music fans, and as travelers and immigrants. Organizations Of Knowledge About The Orient In German And British Romanticism 1780-1820, Naqaa Abbas

This dissertation examines the various literary modes in which German and British Romantic literature and culture organize knowledge about Islam and the Middle East. I explore how the Orient exceeds and troubles the “place” it is given in a historical and geographical classification systems. I argue that many Romantic writers challenge the constructedness of the Oriental narrative during their time, thus questioning what really constitutes knowledge and the limits of knowledge. In this context, I re-evaluate Edward W. Said’s socio-historical generalizations regarding Orientalism as a form of Western control over the East. The early nineteenth century was characterized by a dynamic literary discussion and debate over the nature and effects of human relationships. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley, two of the foremost writers of the period, experimented with and drew conclusions about differing images of marriage within their works. Making use of this public literary genre, the couple engaged in a conversation with one another as they explored and refined their views and judgments of relationships including their own. “A Tragic Farce: Revolutionary Women In Elizabeth Inchbald’S The Massacre And European Drama.” European Romantic Review 17.3 (Summer 2006): 275-88., Wendy Nielsen

This essay examines Elizabeth Inchbald’s treatment of French Revolutionary women and relationship to European drama in order to appreciate the implications of tragic writing for British women playwrights. Focusing on Inchbald’s connections to French culture and English theater in late 1792 and early 1793 elucidates the self‐censoring and generic conventions of her only tragedy, The Massacre. Events in France like the September Massacres unsettled Burkean notions of femininity and raised the possibility of female violence. This mixing of traditional gender characteristics resembles discourse about Inchbald’s dramas as neither tragic, comic, nor tragicomic. The genre of tragic farce describes Inchbald’s revisions …

The Reality Of Artifice: Villiers De L'Isle Adam's L'Eve Future And The Anxiety Of Reproduction, Boyd J. Petersen

First, Villier's L'Eve future employs a poetics of confusion, calling into question binary oppositions and destabilizing the narrative. Second, the novel is concerned with the production of art in a technological age, calling into question the notion of an "original" in a world of technological reproduction. Third, the novel is concerned with the ethics of male desire and the construction of women's bodies. Finally, the text critiques the emerging scientific worldview as an alternate religion, requiring faith, administering sacraments, and officiating rituals.

The psychoanalitical theories of Nicholas Abraham and Maria Torok offer a new interpretive lens through which to consider Frankenstein's monster: as a psychic manifestation of trauma--both that which Victor Frankenstein has inherited from his parents and that which the text inherited from its parent, Mary Shelley.
