Literature As Event: On Eagleton From After Theory To The Event Of Literature, Yonghua Tang
Literature As Event: On Eagleton From After Theory To The Event Of Literature, Yonghua Tang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Terry Eagleton argues that literary works are unities of structures and events, facts and actions. Literary tradition as a whole is both oppositional to and interwoven with the extrinsic social history, which is not merely a reflection from the given realities and literary works but the presence of literary works in the world when they present themselves as events. The interpretation of literary works should target at events and the specific strategies by which the works present themselves instead of targeting at "objects" and "essences." Eagleton proposes that critics should get rid of the dichotomy between essentialism and anti-essentialism so …

Literature As A Passage Of Life: An Overview Of Deleuze-Guattari's Literary Critical Thought, Jing Yin
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper attempts to summarize Deleuze-Guattari's literary critical thought with their claim that literature is "the passage of Life within language which constitutes Ideas." The paper first explicates Deleuze-Guattari's concept of "Life," pointing out that it refers not to concrete or abstract individual life, but to an impersonal and nonorganic power that is proper to the flow of matter-energy and can produce and create differences. The power carries out ceaseless and endless production of desire and various becomings on the plane of immanence. The paper points out that traditional Western philosophy uses binary oppositions to organize the plane of immanence …
The Degeneration Of The Space: On Baudrillard's Critique Of Contemporary Architecture And Urban Space, Shuyuan Wan
The Degeneration Of The Space: On Baudrillard's Critique Of Contemporary Architecture And Urban Space, Shuyuan Wan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Jean Baudrillard not only revealed the loss of truth and meaning, the degeneration of urban space, and the paradox of the space-consumption in what he might term as the Era of Simulation but also established a logic of causation between the overrunning of simulation and the degeneration of the space. In this light, he indulged in his own poetic aesthetics and philosophy of seduction, and hoped to take it as an antidote to re-animate the urban environment and cultural space lost in simulations and codes and to restore aesthetical function back to urban architecture.
The Visible And The Articulable: Investigating Foucault's Philosophy Of Art Through Paintings, Zhong Zhang
The Visible And The Articulable: Investigating Foucault's Philosophy Of Art Through Paintings, Zhong Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In The Order of Things, Foucault reveals the fissure between reality (things) and language (words), i.e., the fissure between image and words (language) in Classic period. Foucault’s philosophical thought on planar visual art is conveyed through his interpretation of three paintings. This thought is carried forward in the interpretation of the first two paintings, but in the Edouard Manet's Paintings, Foucault finds another "vision". The vision of fissure between seeing and speaking or between the visible and the articulable not only renders Manet's paintings as one type of creation but more importantly enables Foucault to find the possibility of the …

The Problems Of Aesthetic Study And The Dialectical Reflection In Adornao's Aesthetics, Tao Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Norms And Nature Appreciation, Robert Stecker
Norms And Nature Appreciation, Robert Stecker
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In recent writings about environmental aesthetics a variety of proposals have been advanced about relevant norms that constrain appropriate aesthetic appreciation of nature. Some of these norms are cognitive or epistemic. Others are moral. If these proposals are correct, then different kinds of value interact in the realm of environmental aesthetics. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate these claims. Such an evaluation inevitably has two parts. One first has to ask whether the purported norms exist. If they do, one has to assess their bearing on evaluative aesthetic judgments. This paper will argue that there are weak epistemic …
Adorno's Aesthetic Reason And The Intellectual Dimension Of Aesthetic Critique: A Contemporary Approach To The Critique Of Enlightenment Rationality, Xia Zhao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Aesthetic reason is as a key concept in Adorno's aesthetic thinking and belongs to the fundamental category in the aes-thetic modernity tradition. Adorno's idea of aesthetic reason leads to both the undermining and reconstructing of its original conception, and it aims to propose an approach to the redemption of the Enlightenment rationality through unique aesthetic reflection. While initiating a radical project for aesthetic redemption, Adorno's idea reveals the intellectual dimension of aesthetic critique of modernity, which, in today's rethinking of the post-modern discourse and exploration into the revival of Enlightenment spirit, offers vital clues for interpreting certain aesthetic phenomena and …

Reappraisal Of The Aesthetic Thoughts Of Giambattista Vico, Liyuan Zhu, Ming Li
Reappraisal Of The Aesthetic Thoughts Of Giambattista Vico, Liyuan Zhu, Ming Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In Chinese academia, the research into the aesthetics of Giambattista Vico has not been well developed after Zhu Guangqian's inaugural exploration. This paper tries to investigate the following problems. What has restricted the further exploration into Vico's aesthetics? Is it reasonable to regard Vico as a theorist of aesthetics with his own original aesthetic thoughts, while he was generally considered as a historical philosopher and a jurist? Our further probe into Vico's thoughts leads us to the belief that "perception" lies at the foundation of Vico's aesthetics. The discussion of "perception" and "poetic wisdom" is the most important part of …

On "Real Author" And "Implied Author", Yuyu Liu, Yanni Lei
On "Real Author" And "Implied Author", Yuyu Liu, Yanni Lei
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Ever since its proposition by Wayne Booth, the concept of "implied author" has been drawing constant attention amongliterary critics. The term has been attributed different, and even competing, meanings, including "the second self" of the real author and the assumed image of the author inferred purely from the text. This paper on the one hand argues that the implied author is neither the conscious creation of the real author nor his/her second self. On the other hand, the paper attempts to propose a more possible interpretation for the"implied author," based on a derivation and revision of Eco's theory of textual interpretation. …

Origin, Truth And The Structure Of Messianic Time: On Theology Of Walter Benjamin's Philosophy, Guoping Hu
Origin, Truth And The Structure Of Messianic Time: On Theology Of Walter Benjamin's Philosophy, Guoping Hu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Theology is one of the core issues of Benjamin's philosophy. Even after the completion of the Marxist turn, Benjamin is still trying to transform the potential of theology with "profane illumination". The sustained attention for origin and truth, and the desire for the redemption of the Messiah, are revealing his theological attitude. At the same time, Benjamin also tries to examine the tension between modernity and theology. In Benjamin's philosophy, the tension in the structure of the Messianic time is not only the entrance for the reflection of modernity, but also the power source of history itself.
Politics Or Aesthetics? —— T. J. Clark's View Of Social History Of Art, Yubing Shen
Politics Or Aesthetics? —— T. J. Clark's View Of Social History Of Art, Yubing Shen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The paper discusses T. J. Clark's social history of art, claiming that as a development upon the traditional version. Traditional social history of art assumes a simplistic relationship among class, ideology and art form, such as Hauser's notion of class identification as the determinant of artistic style. Clarks asserts that "class" and "ideology" may not be manifest in paintings but can be shown only when these external domains have exerted an influence on the visual structure of painting and changed the established concepts of painting such as tradition and convention in painting.
