Modern Myth And Its Types Of Presence, Xianglin Yan
Modern Myth And Its Types Of Presence, Xianglin Yan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Myth is still alive in modern society and even in post-modern society, but its mode of existence, constructed as contemporary myth, is different from that of the traditional myths. Contemporary society also has its mythical thinking and mythological patterns. Contemporary myth is the contemporary creation responding to the creator' purpose and motivation, and it embodies the aesthetic characteristics of industrial society and cultural industry. The existence types of contemporary myth include the myth of science, myth of nation, myth of ethnic group, myth of heroes, myth of politics, and myth of consumption. To some extent, social ideology and literary production …
A Study On The Framework Of "Literary Research Methodology" In 1904 Educational System Reform, Xuehu Chen
A Study On The Framework Of "Literary Research Methodology" In 1904 Educational System Reform, Xuehu Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper attempts to discuss the framework of "Wenxue Yanju Fa" (Literary Research Methodology) in the 1904 educational system reform and tries to describe and understand the space which this reform carved out for the coming knowledge production and theory formation. During the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China period, the institutionalization efforts to construct the discipline of literary studies kept much of Chinese traditional culture and its literature. As a specific device, the envisaged course of "Literary Research Methodology" was constructed mainly on traditional learning and local imagination, and it was marked with the characteristics of …
Moé: Soft Politics In Contemporary Visual Culture, Ming Wu
Moé: Soft Politics In Contemporary Visual Culture, Ming Wu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Moé is a word frequently appearing in Chinese pop culture vocabulary in recent years, but its semantics and usage require clarification. Moé, which was borrowed from Japan, has broken the boundary of anime subculture and become a buzzword in mass media. The visuality of moé pertains some typical postmodern traits such like entertainment and flattening. Faux-moé has an extensive popularity that accelerates the confusion between the right and the wrong, the good and the evil. A moé object, constructed by a faux-moé player, could impose soft control and systematic violence to the persons who patronizes it. In this sense, moé …
The Human-Nature Relationship In The Pre-Cultural-Revolution 17-Year Literature, Yu Wang, Liu Hong
The Human-Nature Relationship In The Pre-Cultural-Revolution 17-Year Literature, Yu Wang, Liu Hong
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The paper argues that the human-nature relationship in the literature of 17 pre-Cultural-Revolution years cannot be interpreted from the sole perspective of ecological ethics, but it should be examined together with the way and the knowledge background under which the relationship was represented. The relationship shows to be two-folded. On the one hand, man regards nature as "the other," when the consciousness of war culture is introduced in the field of man-nature relationship, taking nature as the target to be conquered through in spiritual and technological levels. One the other hand, nature becomes part of the constructive process of the …

The Differentiation Aesthetics In The Representations Of The Clothing, Food, Residence And Traveling Of Migrant Peasant Workers, Bo Feng, Deming Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Clothing, food, residence and traveling make up the daily life of people, and the first three are the basic needs of life while traveling becomes the condition for the three. The different preferences in clothing, food, residence and traveling means of the migrant peasant workers reflect the politics based on the distinction between the urban and the countryside. In the novels about the migrant peasant workers, the representations of their daily life in terms of clothing, food, residence and means of traveling highlight the aesthetics of differentiation. The pursuit of the lifestyle of the citizens is shown as the motivation …
The Public Nature And The Governance Of Contemporary Visual Culture, Xueqin Min, Liyong Zheng
The Public Nature And The Governance Of Contemporary Visual Culture, Xueqin Min, Liyong Zheng
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Contemporary visual culture is encroaching on daily, social and political lives of the public with diversified content and in hi-tech forms. The public nature of contemporary visual culture brings much convenience for itself to integrate into public space, guide public value and participate into public governance. Empirical investigations show that visual culture representing everyday life tends to provide entertainment and interest, and visual culture reflecting social life is hypersensitive to the public nature, while visual culture referring to political life is becoming more pronounced for its remedying social inequality and nurturing participation habits. Visual culture is provided with an unprecedented …
The Sociality Of The Aesthetic And The Reconstruction In Critique: From Zhu Guangqian's "Misreading" Of Croce, Lang Jin
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper investigates the construction of sociality in Zhu Guangqian's aesthetics by analyzing his acceptance of Croce. Misreading is almost a consensus in the studies of Zhu Guangqian's acceptance of Croce, while this might also overshadow his aesthetics construction. When returning to Kant as his point of re-departure, Zhu Guangqian not only directed his critique toward Croce but also the western tradition of idealist philosophy in general, and it is his continuous concern of the sociality of the aesthetic that lies behind his critique. This concern of his starts with his critique of Croce's aesthetics and is realized when he …
Representation, Working And Imagination Of Power: A Study On "The Young Newcomer To The Department Of Organization" And Other "Against-Current Novels", Qinghua Cao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
One important aspect of Wang Meng's novel The Young Newcomer to the Department of Organization and other so-called "Against-Current (Niliu) Novels" is the questioning, exposing and challenging of the way power is represented and worked and the way power is related to its representation and working in these novels, but this has been overlooked for quite a long time in the research scholarship. The paper argues that these novels call into interpellation the representation and working of power in reality while the imagination of power permeated in these novels performs the function of interpellation similar to the in-practice power interplay. …
Traumatic Memory: Psychic Reality And Cultural Representation, Jingrong Zhao
Traumatic Memory: Psychic Reality And Cultural Representation, Jingrong Zhao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Traumatic memory exhibits three fundamental features, namely, the individualistic nature, personal experience, and emotional nature, among which personal experience is the most important because the subject of traumatic memory has a pre-privilege of emotion and ethics. The ultimate goal of the subject with traumatic memory is to get through the negative effects of trauma on the subject and make him cope with the real life. Traumatic memory can be studied from the perspective of its origin in the reality and its cultural representation. Trauma in the form of individual suffering could become collective crisis only when it is studied in …
Towards A Pluralistic Open System Of Literary Theory Studies: A Survey Of British And American Literature Theory Textbooks In Recent 30 Years, Hongbo Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the past 30 years, the drastic changes in literary theories led to corresponding changes in British and American literature theory textbooks. Their textbooks focus on the study of the theories, closely related to literary texts, and exhibit the features such as the diversity of perspectives, openness of concepts, attention to the contemporary, and emphasis on practice. In comparison with them, Chinese course books of literary theories need to get rid of the constraints of essentialism in terms of literary concept and knowledge construction, and construct a student-centered system of literary theory studies that can tackle with the contemporary literary …
Changing Authorship: The Evolution On Literary Practices And Theory, Miaomiao Xu
Changing Authorship: The Evolution On Literary Practices And Theory, Miaomiao Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Focusing on the changing concept of author, this paper tries to investigate the new demands posed to literary theory from the new media by contextualizing its argument in the combined development of literary theory, literary history and new media. The paper claims that literary theory, due to its development in the context of print culture, increasingly shows its deficiencies in the current media. In terms of the authorship, individual authors may not have been essential for literary creation, and the concept of determined authors is established in written system and the print culture and re-enforced with the regulations of intellectual …
Lu Xun's Quartet Of Chinese Practice During The Late Qing Dynasty And The Early Republican Period, Guiliang Wen
Lu Xun's Quartet Of Chinese Practice During The Late Qing Dynasty And The Early Republican Period, Guiliang Wen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
During the late Qing dynasty and the early Republican period, Lu Xun's Chinese practice could be depicted as a quartet. Lu Xun's pro-vernacular interpretative translation of Travel on the Moon and Travel Underground not only demonstrates his ability to use vernacular (baihua) but also exposes his entanglement among vernacular, classical Chinese (wenyan) and Europeanized Chinese. Lu Xun's idea of the unreliability of language was formed after he listened to Zhang Taiyan's exegesis of Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) and his explanation of translating foreign fictions into classical Chinese. Lu Xun's mastery of classical Chinese can be seen in the …

A Diachronic Approach And Synchronic Interpretation Of Xu Zhongyu's Academic Lineage, Zhixiang Qi
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The subject of this research is Prof. Xu Zhongyu's (1915-) six-volume Collected Writings, and the paper approach his academic achievements through diachronic and synchronic methods by putting them into the social context in the past century. The three academic peaks in Prof. Xu's life can be linked by the fundamental literary thought which may be summarized as his advocacy of literature's positive role in the social progress, his promotion of art and academic freedom, and his emphasis on truth pursuit and independent thinking. His achievements are shown in four areas of Anti-Japanese War period literary theory, ancient Chinese literary theory, …
"Form" As A Term In Chinese Aesthetics, Qinfang Lai
"Form" As A Term In Chinese Aesthetics, Qinfang Lai
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As an aesthetic term, Chinese phrase "xingshi" as a translated equivalent for form has taken time to get its meaning established. The term has once been considered to be a borrowed word from Japanese, but it is actually an existent word invested with new meaning whose appearance was similar to the phrase "meixue (study of beauty)" for aesthetics. Chinese term "xingshi (pattern of shape)" came into being when translation for German formal aesthetics posed this necessity, and then the term gradually takes root into Chinese aesthetics and takes on local significance. Like in the Western context, formalism has once had …
The Logic Of Space: The Internal Relationships Within The Spatial Layers Of Literary Context, Jie Xu
The Logic Of Space: The Internal Relationships Within The Spatial Layers Of Literary Context, Jie Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Just as linguistic context is divided into three layers: verbal context, situational context and socio-cultural context, so the literary context of literature as a language art can be divided into literary textual context, literary situational context and literary cultural context. The textual context is the core layer in literary context, and literary cultural context defines the outer layer of the literary context, with situational context intermediating the inner and outer layers of literary context. Literary situational context is further divided into three interrelated dimensions which may be termed as literary media context, literary discourse context and literary function context. These …
"Organic Entity" And The Evolution Of Zhu Guangqian's Early Thought, Hongbing Zhou
"Organic Entity" And The Evolution Of Zhu Guangqian's Early Thought, Hongbing Zhou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The concept of "organic entity" is the foundation of Zhu Guangqian's early intellectual thoughts since 1927. This concept was repeatedly used from 1927 to 1944 in Zhu's work to observe, describe and interpret life and art, and it was also used as a dominant concept to re-examine the evolution of Western philosophy and science in the 19th and 20th centuries, and re-examine the Kantian-Crocian influence upon him for the construction of his own aesthetic theory of "artification of life." The researches on Zhu's concept of "organic entity" are generally superficial for their focus on his organic knowledge, which has not …
The Formation Of Chinese New Poetry As Translated Modernity, Liming Chen
The Formation Of Chinese New Poetry As Translated Modernity, Liming Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper approaches the modern construction of Chinese "new poetry" from the perspective of translingual practice, and argues that the production of the new poetry is a combined result of the pursuit of cultural transformation and the influence from the Western modernity while translation functions as the medium. Chinese literary modernity presents itself first in the Europeanized baihua (vernacular mandarin). The vernacular mandarin baihua was not originated in as late as the late Qing dynasty or the early Republic of China, as commonly believed, but as early as the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, for its close relation with …
The Practical Orientation And Hasty Theorization In The Expansion Of Literary Theory: An Unfinished Case On Literature And Literariness, Nan Gao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The expansion of literary theory has been accepted by all the related circles. However, the theoretical explorations into it appear haste and leave much to be clarified. Central to the expansion is the argument over the relationship between literariness and literature, whereas literariness becomes crucial for social life to be included into literary theory. In fact, the concept of literariness itself is not sufficient to support the theory. The leading role of literariness in the expansion arises from the so-called marginalization of literature, which reflects a strong sense of loss among the elitist thinking of literature and literary theory. However, …
A Revolutionist's Loyalty Crisis And Its Dissolution: A Re-Reading Of Wang Meng'sBu Li, Dongfeng Tao
A Revolutionist's Loyalty Crisis And Its Dissolution: A Re-Reading Of Wang Meng'sBu Li, Dongfeng Tao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Wang Meng's novel Bu Li ("Bolshevistic Salute") is about the loyalty crisis of the protagonist Zhong Yicheng, a Chinese revolutionist. The terror of the loyalty crisis lies in that Zhong can never be an independent being but is totally attached to revolution itself. The faith of a revolutionist and the loyalty to Chinese Communist Party serve as the foundation of Zhong's identity, and his relation with revolution becomes the sole reason and meaning for his life as well as the guarantee for him to be a "human." The only thing he can be is a revolutionist and a son of …
The Literariness Of Theory: A New Perspective On Writing Textbooks Of Literary Theory, Yang Liu
The Literariness Of Theory: A New Perspective On Writing Textbooks Of Literary Theory, Yang Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Toward the second decade of the 21st century, literary theory textbooks should absorb the recent developments in literary theory around the world. In contrast to the two existent measures of aniti-theory and the politicization of theory, "the literariness of theory" may be more instructive in the writing of college literary theory textbooks. Literariness has gradually entered the academic field of humanities and liberal arts, and it has helped to form a legitimate discourse for the discipline of literary theory. This discourse is mediated through situations which have the contents such as narrative, fiction, imagination, metaphor, language, dialogue, suspense, anecdotes and …
The Paradigm Shift Of Literary Theory And Its Discourse Renovation, Wenfang Yao
The Paradigm Shift Of Literary Theory And Its Discourse Renovation, Wenfang Yao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The literary theory discourse has undergone extensive innovation in recent decades in two main ways: using the existent concepts and inventing new concepts. When inventing new concepts, two methods are seen to be reinvesting existent concepts with new meaning and changing the meaning of the existent concepts. These transformation mechanisms are corresponding to Kuhn's theorization of paradigm and Foucault's theorization of discourse. The discourse innovation is required for the paradigm shift in literary theory, and it embodies the prescriptive features of the literary theory paradigm such as the age, society, economy, geography, and language, giving new content and form to …
The System Of The Press And The Emergence Of Chinese Contemporary Literature, Jun Zhang
The System Of The Press And The Emergence Of Chinese Contemporary Literature, Jun Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The way the system of the press intervenes in the emergence and development of Chinese contemporary literature (1949-1976) requires convincing research from the academic circle. In fact, the system of the press affects the existence of contemporary literature in the three progressive aspects. Initially, the socialist ownership of the press turns the old-new and left-right dichotomies into the imbalanced state dominated by "the literature for the new people." Then, the agency dilemma of the press leads to the competition between the different literary discourses and interests in the internal integration of contemporary literature. Finally, the operation principles of the sectionalist …
The Concept Of Image In Zhu Guangqian's Early Aesthetic Thoughts, Huaiyi Wang
The Concept Of Image In Zhu Guangqian's Early Aesthetic Thoughts, Huaiyi Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In such early works as Psychology of Literature and Arts and On Poetry, Zhu Guangqian constructed his transcendental aesthetic theory centered round the concept of image, putting forwards his theory of imagery structure and his critique of the concept of jingjie (the poetic state) in Chinese poetics. Although Zhu's theory is centered around imagery, and it is realized on the basis of the unity of the poetic state, his criticism on Wang Guowei's concept of the poetic state and on the concept in ancient Chinese poetics in general appear to have missed the point, due to his preconceived ideas that …
Beyond The "Adaptation Paradigm": The "Spreadable Literature" And Its Contemporary Characteristics, Lulu Zhou
Beyond The "Adaptation Paradigm": The "Spreadable Literature" And Its Contemporary Characteristics, Lulu Zhou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the era of fast changing multimedia environment, the problem of the literariness and its formats of existence and communication require new theoretical approaches. On the basis of empirical observations of some concrete cases in mainland China and abroad, this paper proposes the concept of "spreadable literature" to expand the theoretical vision of the mainstreamed "adaptation paradigm." The "adaptation paradigm" focuses on the studies of film and televisual screen adaptations of literary works and follows the linear communication logic, which not only eschews the strong tradition of the spreadability of ancient folk literature but also fails to help us understand …
Ethical Interpretation Of Narrative Perspective In Novels, Shouyi Jiang
Ethical Interpretation Of Narrative Perspective In Novels, Shouyi Jiang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As a formal technique, narrative perspective in novels also has ethical meaning. Different perspectives in narration produce different ethical effects, and a change of perspective results in different ethical effect. In terms of the rhetorical effects of narrative perspective, both the decorative and the persuasive natures of rhetoric point eventually to ethics, while in terms of the value in narrative perspective, the communication between the reader and the author based on psychological exchange is also an ethical communication.
Wang Yuanhua's Concept Of Ideology-Academics As Social Remedy And Its Implications To Intellectual History, Chengwan Lao, Guoqiao Lan
Wang Yuanhua's Concept Of Ideology-Academics As Social Remedy And Its Implications To Intellectual History, Chengwan Lao, Guoqiao Lan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Wan Yuanhua (1920-2008) believed that academic research and ideology should be integrated with each other, and this idea of ideology-academics integration is Wang's preposition to redress the social maladies. Although his idea has not found fervent echoes in the academic circle, the paper claims that his idea could not be ignored during the development of our cultural intellectual history and can be done full justice by scholars who have investigated the origin, trajectory and outcome of his idea. What worried Wan Yuanhua was the spiritual rootlessness shown in the cynicalness toward and mindless challenge of serious academic pursuit. Wang Yuanhua's …
History As Re-Presentation: With Reference To Nation, History And Narrative Of The State, Xinjian Xu
History As Re-Presentation: With Reference To Nation, History And Narrative Of The State, Xinjian Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The paper proposes that history is also literature, and examines the historical representation of China from the perspectives of literature and literary anthropology. The paper argues the following three main prepositions. In terms of literary and oral representation, history belongs to literature in the broad sense. All the representations of Chinese history can be investigated from the perspective of literature. Since China is a multi-nation state, the representations of its history require a vision of pluralist dialogue, and this asks for a deep understanding of sinology while the dialogue should extend to the communication within the studies of the ethnic …
Literary Folkloristics: The Trend Of Interdisciplinary Research In The Recent Thirty Years, Meili Shen, Qinjian Chen
Literary Folkloristics: The Trend Of Interdisciplinary Research In The Recent Thirty Years, Meili Shen, Qinjian Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since the mid-1980s, literary folkloristics has become one of the new methods in literary study for its focus on the interdisciplinary study of literature and folklore. The theoretical interpretation and research practice have since taken two different academic orientation and theoretical approach. One emphasizes on the instrumentality of folklore theory in study of literary text, analysing the styles in literary works and exploring the folklore materials in them. The other has its theoretical foundations from the concepts such as "the cultural existence of man" and "literary study as the study of man," and it is more concerned with the understanding …
The Theoretical Reflection On The Problem Of Literary Ontology: A Case Study Of Qian Zhongwen's Literary Theory: Explorations And Reflections, Zhixiang Qi
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper takes Qian Zhongwen's book Literary Theory: Explorations and Reflections as its research subject, and surveys his reflections and debates since the turn of the century on some important issues in literary ontology. The issues include: Dose literature have its own "essence"? Does anti-essentialism mean the cancellation of research on "essence"? If the research on literary "essence" cannot be cancelled, what is the "essence" of literature? How can we evaluate the expansion of the bounders of the literature and literary theory after deconstruction? How to put into the perspective the alarming claims of "the end of literature" and "the …
Verbal Image And Image-Idea: A Divide Of Semiotic Interpretation Of Poetry, Xinshi Li
Verbal Image And Image-Idea: A Divide Of Semiotic Interpretation Of Poetry, Xinshi Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper starts from the perspective of semiotic poetics and by introducing the poetic term "verbal image" and re-interpreting the traditional term "yi xiang" (image-idea), it tries to clarify the relationship between language, verbal image and image-idea in poetics. Verbal image and image-idea can be distinguished for the different natures of their symbolic objects. Verbal Image can be divided into physical verbal image and transferred verbal image. The combination of meta-language and connotative signification can illustrate the formation mechanism of verbal image. The difference in language use, aesthetic principle, and the definition of poetry between the modern and the classical …
