The paper maintains that the emergence of aesthetic reflection theory in China was largely the contribution of Prof. Xu Zhongyu as the result of his respect to and explorations into the artistic law of literary creation. Prof. Xu first incorporated the notion that "literature is the study of man" into the literary theory course books in China and demonstrated the profound interconnection between literature, humanity and humanitarianism. Non-fiction Writing is not a particular genre, but a narrative strategy with anti-conventional characteristics. It relies heavily on the specific value of the subject matter itself and the subjective thinking of the writer, and thus makes it difficult to take into account the inherent artistic value of the work per se. Throughout the process from identifying the subject matter to narrating, the writer is an ever-present figure, providing irrefutable facts for the narrative. Concerns with and reflections on self-portraits afford a perspective to glimpse numerous dimensions in social and cultural issues, including gender representation. Self-portrait is a record of the result of self-presentation. As a special artistic style, women's self-portraits have distinctive images and implications, and are irreplaceable in the consideration of gender issues. Women's self-portraits demonstrate female artists' unique pursuit in the constructions of self-image, performances of interpersonal relationship, and means of expression. The 15 existing plays by the Yuan-Dynasty playwright Guan Hanqing reflect the playwright's originality in processing subject matter through transformation of conventional themes and his realistic concerns with profound thoughts. Guan Hanqing's plays, literally variety dramas in Chinese, demonstrate a variety of structural types with different dramaturgic techniques. The plot from suspense, misunderstanding, and discovery to return is well adapted into plays with each act comprising two sections, and this greatly promotes the expressiveness of the plays. In his questioning of Chinese fiction, Howard Goldblatt suggests that, thanks to its obsession with the depiction of daily life, Chinese fiction features loosely-knit plots, which as a result deprives itself of literariness. Goldblatt's perception is problematic, because the depiction of everyday details precisely originates from the long history of Chinese literary tradition, which pursues the harmony of writing, man, and the world. Such a harmony-seeking practice bespeaks the Chineseness of modern Chinese fiction. The term "Fangweng Style" was first used in The Metrical Marrow of the Hall of the Literary Notables, in order to describe the style of Lu You's poetic creations. Today, the prevalent definition of the "Fangweng Style" is focused on its patriotic themes and magnificent artistic conceptions. In fact, the connotations of "Fangweng Style" varied during different periods. During the Ming and Qing periods, it featured the subject matter of daily life, with a smooth and fresh style. Wei Xi(1624-1681), an early Qing-Dynasty prose theorist, proposed the concept of "genuine air(zhen-qi)," and it is an important component to his literary theory. In essence, the concept highlights author's personality and centers round author's reason, while it also implicitly promotes cultural pluralism. With this concept, Wei's theory framework can refrain from overreliance on the rules, reason and knowledge. Derrida's deathbed interview raises important questions about the relationship between theory and death. His dying and his words about death form the tension of this interview event. Through survival theory, he charts the theorist's path to immortality beyond life, but he also frankly shows the helplessness in the face of real death. He raises questions but does not answer them; rather, he leaves them to posterity because he could not find a convincing (or in his words, "sincere") balance or consistency between the theory and death.

Qian Xuantong borrowed and transformed Zhang Taiyan's resources of literary language when he joined the camp of the May Fourth literary revolution. This research seeks to investigate the politics behind these woodblock prints by studying social and political climate of the time it was produced. The decades immediately following the Meiji Restoration of 1868 saw Japan rapidly develop as a “modern” nation — replete with industrial technology, a powerful and sophisticated military, a burgeoning capitalist economy, a broad based educational system, and, by the early twentieth century, a massive influx of contemporary Western political, philosophical, literary and artistic ideals, including socialism, anarchism, and nearly all variations of avant-garde art and aesthetics. This instructional design paper introduces an instruction method called MovieTalk. Discussed are the reasons of MovieTalk application in class, the criteria of choosing appropriate MovieTalk materials, and the concerns for MovieTalk instruction. The design aims to explain the benefits of this comprehensible input method of Chinese language instruction of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. With the Disney cartoon film “Bridge” as an example, this design employs the backwards design to demonstrate how to deliver MovieTalk instructions step by step in class with the TPRS method and class activities.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of studies on “teacher talk” used in TCSL classrooms. Many of these studies are focused on language interactions between the teacher and the students as well as on the individual functions of “the teachers’ classroom talk.” This article examines the current status of, and problems associated with, teachers’ instructional language, i.e., teacher talk. Based on transcripts of audio recordings of teachers’ instructional language, this study analyzes problems ranging from inaccurate to excessive words in the instructional language and the causes of these problems. This study aims to explore the effect of participation in extracurricular activities (ECAs) on Chinese language learning in Zimbabwe. The study employed survey design as the major research method. The questionnaire constructed by the researcher included ‘yes/no’, multiple choice and open-ended questions. A total of 45 students from the University of Zimbabwe participated in the study. The results indicate that more than 78% of students had some experience with ECAs and were aware of ECAs available through their university. Language-related ECAs included trips to China, luncheons at Chinese restaurants, games and competitions, movies, and language retreats. The majority of respondents …

This study explores how Japanese EFL students engaged in translingual practices during a telecollaborative project that connected two college classrooms in the US and Japan. The project aimed at encouraging the students’ creative uses of languages, promoting an appreciation for their multiple linguistic resources, and nurturing their sense of ownership of languages informed by translingual practices. Contrary to our expectations, students in Japan exhibited great efforts to write in monolingual English and/or Japanese, which prompted us to investigate the reasons behind their language choices. After enduring the systematic oppression under Suharto’s three-decade regime (1967-1998) in Indonesia through discriminatory policies, Chinese-Indonesians suffered an enormous loss in the 1998 riots that signified the end of Suharto’s regime. Many Chinese-Indonesians were killed, raped, and displaced. A few years later, the new government abolished the discriminatory policies against Chinese-Indonesians, and they started to enjoy equality as citizens of Indonesia. However, negativities that resulted from the traumatic experiences cannot be diminished easily. Comparative Philosophy
This paper focuses on Meng Zi’s idea of yi (義) as a virtue. In it, I first briefly examine two influential interpretations of yi – the “appropriateness” approach that views yi as a disposition to do what is fitting in a given situation and the shame-centered approach that understands yi as a disposition to avoid what is shameful in the moral life. The first approach is too thin to distinguish yi from acting properly in general and the second reading confines the definitive feeling involved in yi to a too moralized understanding of shame.
