This study examines the current demographic crisis in Japan, namely the lack of eligible adults in the workforce, a lack of relationships and marriages, and an aging population, which has led to a declining population. Speaking a language involves more than just knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation: It also requires the abilities to interpret what your interlocutor is saying, to formulate a relevant response, and to deliver it in a timely manner. Evidentials are one of the language codes that convey the speaker's beliefs in terms of the degree of reliability of information and how the speaker obtained information (Chafe, 1986; Ishida, 2006; McCready and Ogata, 2007). Evidentials play an important role in communication since they also function to show the speaker's attitude toward the interlocutors by making a sentence softer (Trent 1998). In his theory of territory of information, Kamio (1990, 1997, 2002) proposed that pragmatic rules of evidentials are different in Japanese than in English. Kobayashi Takiji's (1903-1933) Kanikōsen (The Crab Cannery Ship, 1929), the outstanding work from the proletarian literary movement, experienced an influx of new adaptations into various mediums during the years that preceded and followed the "Kanikōsen boom" of 2008. This thesis focuses on two manga adaptations that provide readers with starkly different takes on the original story. Using theories by Scott McCloud and Azuma Hiroki, I first attempt to draw parallels between the form of manga and that of the novel. Efficacy of a leadership approach may be highly dependent upon cultural factors, making additional research in foreign contexts necessary. A methodology was developed to investigate the relationship between Confucian values and leadership preferences. Responses on the Chinese Values Survey (CVS) were compared to those of the Vannsimpco Leadership Survey (VLS) for both Korean (N = 48) and American (N = 47) university respondents. Correlations for both groups revealed a link between Confucian values and hybrid leadership styles. "不響"裏的當代史 : 《繁花》裏的兩個時代及其美學, Xiaoming Chen

《繁花》以單雙章交替的形式展開敘事，分别講述60 年代與90 年代以來的故事。小説實際上是使用二種不同的敘事方法，60 年代的故事以個人記憶爲依據的現實主義手法；90 年代的生活則以説書人的文體表現爲各表一枝的格局。前者因爲歷史的激進變革與困苦，對人的生存構成强大的壓抑，但小説卻因此寫出了歷史中生存的人們的堅忍不拔；後者因爲繁華盛世浮華亂象，生活顯現爲虚空和無意義，作者尋求做舊筆法，賦予傳統與歷史做底色，從美學與文化的層面重新給予其韻致。這裏面顯然貫穿著作者對兩個時代的判斷，對人類生活之正當性的理解。在歷史與人的生活之間，在政治、文化與美學之間，《繁花》終究以美學或寫作的倫理學化解了那些矛盾。因此，這就要從歷史感的角度解釋這部作品，纔能呈現它的豐富性與複雜性。

架空穿越 : 第三種虛構歷史的文學方法, Zidong Xu

“歷史演義”、“故事新編”和“穿越架空”，可以説是現當代中文文學虚構歷史的三種基本方法。“歷史演義”把故事説成歷史，隱藏“古爲今用”目的，雖然在“五四”文學成就不大，卻影響了50 年代的“革命歷史小説”。“故事新編”是作家有意顛覆經典文本，比如香港文學改編中國傳統故事，以及80 年代中國的“革命故事新編”（新歷史小説）。“穿越”與“架空”雖是不同文學技巧，但都與中國文學／ 文化生産機制的變化有關。本文將以《琅琊榜》現象爲例，探討“架空歷史小説”和國家意識形態及民衆社會心理之間的複雜關係。

從"傳奇文" 溯源看魯迅、陳寅格的"小說"概念, Lihua Zhang

魯迅的《中國小説史略》奠定了20 世紀關於中國小説史的主流論述。然而，在這部經典著作中，以“小説”之名串聯起來的對象，如六朝鬼神志怪書、《世説新語》、唐傳奇以及宋元話本之間，其文體的異質性其實極大。陳寅恪在《韓愈與唐代小説》、《元白詩箋證稿》等論著中對唐傳奇與古文運動之關係的發覆，在觀念和方法上皆與魯迅的《中國小説史略》構成了重要的學術對話。本文擬從魯迅與陳寅恪對唐傳奇文體淵源的論述爲切入點，來探討他們在“小説”觀念上的差異及其文學史方法的内在對話關係。

香港另類奇迹 : 董啟章的書寫/行動和《學習年代》, Der Wei, David Wang

董啓章是當代香港最重要的小説家。本文介紹董啓章在新世紀的《自然史三部曲》，並以最後一部《學習年代》爲重點。《自然史三部曲》描述香港進入現代的發生史和發展時史；《學習年代》側重青年學生面對香港歷史變化的思與行。本文討論此書的三項特色：董啓章對青春與香港在地啓蒙論述的思考；董與西方學者、作家從歌德到阿倫特的對話；教育成長小説與社會行動的關聯。

留學生魯迅關於中國道路的思考, Nong Gu

魯迅留學日本期間確立了此後的發展方向，也對中國未來的道路作出了深刻的思考。他認爲，中國應通過革命推翻帝制而驟列於共和，從此發展科學和工業，走向繁榮富强，同時要改造國民性，建設好精神文明。中國是一文明古國，又是深受列强侵略的弱國，因此不可能走西方的老路，而應堅持反對帝國主義的鬥争，也不去照搬西方式的議會民主，以便建立起具有中國特色的高度文明的“人國”。魯迅的設想中有著某種難以説明白的理想主義，他當時寄希望於超人式的“精神界之戰士”，則明顯受到無政府主義思潮的一些影響。他在成長的過程中還有很長的路要走。

陳三立與同光體贛派, Yingjian Hu

同光體詩派是晚清民國以來形成的一個影響最大的詩歌流派。下分閩派、贛派、浙派。其中贛派主要承宋代江西詩派。贛派首領陳三立，獨辟詩境，表現在如下方面：擅長寫荒寒之景；抒極哀慟之情；比喻、借代、擬人手法生動；意象新穎；通感手法之妙；煉字奇警；句法拗峭奇崛。其詩學淵源承傳黄庭堅而又有創新，其内容深廣，萬象紛呈，境界闊大蒼莽，風格沉雄，則又爲黄所不及。此派中遠承宋代江西詩派而近受陳三立影響的有：江西籍詩人華焯、王浩、胡梓方等；江西籍學者詩人辛際周、汪辟疆、胡先驌、王易等；陳三立之子衡恪、隆恪、寅恪、方恪。在南京還有一批並非贛籍而可歸爲贛派的學人，如王瀣、胡翔冬、胡光煒，均或多或少受陳三立影響。陳三立以其鮮明的詩風，沾溉後學衆多，可謂廣大教化主。

從"誨盜之書" 到 "祖國第一政法小說" : 晚清的"新評《水滸傳》", Xiaohong Xia

受西方與日本明治小説觀念與作品引進的啟發，晚清“小説界革命”蓬勃興起。對傳統小説的價值重估，也成爲其中一道搶眼的風景，而尤以《水滸傳》的“新評”最爲熱鬧。從認可傳統的“誨盜之書”起步，經歷日本《世界百傑傳》爲施耐庵立傳的刺激，在晚清多種小説雜誌上展開的《水滸傳》新論，總體上呈現出由讚賞文學意趣向揭示政治寄托轉移的趨勢。評論者貼近時代思潮與政局動向的現實激情，致使這部古典小説竟與自由意境、獨立精神、民權思想、民族主義、武德風範、無政府理想、立憲政治直至女權意識奇妙地掛上鉤。諸種最新學説的交匯，在以“祖國第一政治小説”相推許的《新評水滸傳》中達到高潮。由此，晚清的“新評《水滸傳》”也爲後人留下了值得深入探究的豐富遺産。

佛教婦女對於張愛玲《色戒》寫作影響之淺探, Chunhong Wang

張愛玲《色戒》寫作具有觀念先行的特點，她好讀《紅樓夢》、《金瓶梅》等中國古典小説，裏面的佛教思想對她有很深的影響，包括佛教對女性的看法，譬如認爲女性貪戀珠寶飾物，淫欲無度，好嫉妒，等等，在刻畫抗日女義士王佳芝的時候，她把這些佛教所認爲的女性弱點全强加於其人之身，將她寫成一個大義泯滅，在情欲、物欲陷阱裏不可自拔的可憐女子，這是對有民族氣節的抗日勇士的歪曲，這也反映了張愛玲寫作中的重大誤區。

現代性與古典性的交融 : 郭沫若歷史悲劇的特色之一 : 以《屈原》為例, Wenying Wang

郭沫若的歷史劇多爲悲劇，其題材選擇、構想的出發點首先是時代的需要，有其鮮明現代性和當代意識，《屈原》在這方面十分典型。本文重點論述《屈原》作爲歷史悲劇承續傳統中華文化血脈的古典性的兩個特點：1. 詩言志、緣情的傳統。《女神》極其强烈地既繼承又突破這一傳統，即繼承了詩歌以抒情爲主的傳統，同時又吸收了《離騷》熱烈表現詩人理想、情愫的楚騷風格和西方狂飆突進的浪漫主義詩風，突破了抒情止於禮的中和、含蓄、有節制的主流傳統。《屈原》的話劇體裁是自西方移植進來的現代新劇種，没有戲曲的唱（詩歌因素），但是《屈原》在某種意義上是“詩劇”或者“劇詩”，一則接續了詩言志、緣情的傳統，並實際上對現代話劇體裁作了詩化的處理，從而與傳統戲曲有了某種契合；二則《女神》那種大膽、奔放、火山爆發式的强烈激情，在《屈原》中以新的詩劇形式得到了新的表現。2. 對中國悲劇傳統的古典性也有繼承、有突破。古典悲劇儘管可以包含悲劇性矛盾和衝突，但多以“大團圓”即好人最後戰勝壞人的圓滿結局收場。《屈原》雖然没有直接寫屈原投江自盡的悲劇結局，但是，嬋娟替屈原被毒死，及彌漫全劇的悲劇氛圍卻打破了“大團圓”的傳統結局。更重要的，中國古代並非没有悲劇意識，《史記·屈原賈生列傳》記敘了屈原高尚人格、美好人生被無情毁滅的來龍去脈，特别是心靈的歷程，是典型的悲劇意識，而且屈原的悲劇屬於傳統悲劇中由於君王支持，忠奸之争以忠遭打擊而奸獲勝的模式。《屈原》就是這個傳統模式的現代演繹。

近代報刊小說轉載編年史, Dakang Chen

自梁啟超宣導“小説界革命”後，小説的地位驟然上升，報刊這一新傳播方式的出現，更有力地推動了小説的發展，人們的閲讀熱情也相應高漲。刊載小説可擴大報刊銷量，但當創作落後於傳播的發展時，許多報刊都面臨稿源不足的問題，轉載其他報刊上作品的現象由此而産生。本文以編年體展現了報刊小説轉載現象的萌生與逐步蔓延，其中涉及轉載的作品、報刊、各種廣告與告白，以及與之相關的各種事件。由於是按時序排列，轉載現象發展態勢顯示得較爲清晰，可供近代報刊小説研究者參考。

神理與妙悟, Jing Zhang

詩歌創作中“理”的價值如何？應該是什麽樣的形態？本文主張，詩中不惟可以言理，而且詩中之理應該有著獨特的本質特徵和審美規律。王夫之提出的“神理”，似乎可以作爲詩中之“理”的理想形態。“神理”的内涵，當然不同於一般的邏輯概念，不同於理論形式，甚至與錢鍾書在《談藝録》中所描述的“理趣”也並非完全相同。“神理”主要不是指其在詩歌篇什中的實體性質，而是指詩人與物象“心目相取”的意向性活動。從主體角度而言，“妙悟”是詩人獲致“神理”的基本思維方式。“妙悟”源於佛學，指參證佛教終極真理的直覺思維。而終極真理的特徵即是不可分性。後來詩論家嚴羽以“妙悟”爲詩學思維的根本，同時認爲詩歌創作是不能通過“理路”即邏輯思維方式進行的。至王夫之、葉燮則正面揭示了“理”在詩歌中存在的合理性，在詩中不僅可以有“理”，而且有最爲重要的價值。“神理”是“妙悟”的内涵與對象，“妙悟”是“神理”的思維方式。

《嶺南學報》復刊，已經第八輯。這是第一次較集中地刊載現當代文學研究的論文。我們是在2015 年春開始策劃相關專輯的。最初我和系内教現代文學的同事商議，開一個“故事新編與穿越”的會。不久我在港大開會碰到王德威談起這個設想，我們覺得這個題目必然關涉現當代，也必然與古典有關。“穿越”課題既是熱點又是“禁區”，卻鮮有嚴肅的學術討論。我們想請些行内的專家來，平心静氣地討論。王教授很感興趣，答應一定會來。同年秋天，學報主編蔡宗齊教授建議把會議題目改爲“現代與古典文學的相互穿越：故事新編與理論重建”，話題從現當代創作擴展到理論，時間跨度則涵蓋古典和現當代。事實上，後來在會上宣讀的論文，的確可分兩類，一是研討現當代創作的“穿越”現象，二是理論研究中的“跨學科”實踐。

追摹、混搭與穿越 : 晚清畫報中的古今對話, Pingyuan Chen

Above, On, Or Shang (上)? Language And Spatial Representations Among English–Mandarin Bilinguals, Wei Xing Toh, Lidia Suãrez

This study investigated if exposure to spatial language could affect spatial cognition in English-Mandarin bilinguals by focusing on contact/noncontact distinctions, an area that has been a source of contention in the language-and-thought literature. Sixty-three participants were first primed with sentences containing spatial terms (e.g., above, on) before performing a spatial decision task. Approximately half of the participants (n = 33) were primed in English; for the remaining participants (n = 30), primes comprising Mandarin spatial terms―which mark spatial distinctions differently than in English (e.g., shang in Mandarin signifies both above and on in English)―were employed instead. The purpose of this research is to explore behavioral, normative, and control beliefs in the discussion of advance care planning (ACP) among older and younger Chinese Americans. Ethnic minority groups have been identified as less engaged in ACP and this represents an ethnic and cultural gap. Older Chinese American adults often have different beliefs and values compared to the younger generation who are more acculturated to American mainstream culture. These differences may hinder the discussion of ACP with Chinese older adults.
