Through class observations and interviews, this study identified eight types of writing errors that American beginners of Chinese calligraphy. These errors include: (1) failure to apply the Chinese philosophical mindset when producing a real work of calligraphy, (2) dropping some stroke(s) or stroke part(s), (3) misplaced strokes, (4) improperly connected strokes, (5) misshapen curved strokes, (6) disproportionate component size, (7) incorrect thickness and character size, and (8) angled vertical strokes. These errors reflect the students’ lack of knowledge of Chinese characters, the writing skills, and the application of Yin and Yang philosophy. In his article "China and the Politics of Cross–Cultural Representation in Interwar European Fiction" Carles Prado-Fonts analyzes Joan Crespi's La ciutat de la por (The City of Fear, 1930) to illustrate the varied representations of China in interwar Europe. In the 1920s and 1930s, a plurality of views on China and the Chinese people became widespread across different parts of Europe, mainly shaped by English, French, and German representations. Contradictory images of China coexisted in literature, thought, and popular culture. 本論文從新詩和古典詩關係的角度切入，探討1917 年至1937 年的新詩作家怎樣借用古典詩歌的文化資源，並結合時代環境因素和個人因素，探索和發展新詩的形式和語言，並以具體創作加以實踐。論文以個案形式展開論述，重點考察對象，包括：聞一多(1899－1946)、卞之琳(1910－2000)、林庚(1910－2006)和郭沫若(1892－1978)。這些作家有共同的背景：他們具有深厚的古典文學素養，同時寫作新詩和舊體詩，創作經歷是從舊體詩的沉浸中而來，並漸漸對新詩創作產生興趣，因而自覺地繼承古典詩歌的文化資源，再轉化成新詩的形式和語言，表達屬於現代的思想，對往後新詩的形式和語言發展有重要的影響力。中國古典詩歌的文化資源影響中國新詩的形成，促成中國詩歌的現代轉型。本論文重點探討以下問題：第一，探討詩人如何繼承和轉化古典詩傳統，發展成新詩的傳統。第二，分析詩人如何從古典詩歌汲取養份，建構新詩的形式和語言範式。第三，檢討在中國詩歌的現代轉型過程中，傳統民族文學因素在新詩建構工程中的位置。

透過各章節的分析，本論文進一步釐清新詩人如何借助古典詩的文化資源，作為新詩創作的參考理論。傳統民族文學因素在新詩建構工程中的位置十分重要，古典詩所確立的詩學觀、形式句法、意象系統和語言系統，在聞一多、林庚、卞之琳和郭沫若的新詩中，有不同的承繼和轉化。這四位詩人對「新詩特質」有不同理解，這與時代因素、文學觀念的取態和創作目的有密切關係。「新詩特質」的理解影響他們接受古典詩文化資源的方針，從中可見中國現代文學史的新詩和古典詩關係，遠比很多人想像中複雜。

Between 1875 and 1890, Japanese academics, writers, legal experts, and intellectuals discussed and debated a host of new ideas and programs in the rapidly-expanding national media. Of great consequence were the 1890 Imperial Rescript on Education and the Meiji Constitution. The first sought to establish a strong nativist basis for a Japanese identity under the aegis of an imperial hegemon. The second sought to create a structure for modern citizenship based on Western notions of law and social contract. This research examines the emergence and evolution of the concept of the “Ideal Home” in colonial Korea (1910–1945). In particular, I show that the newly appeared instruments including expositions, department stores and mass media enabled political power to disseminate the concept of the ideal home that homogenized people’s lifestyle. In the first chapter, I argue that the Home Exposition in 1915 was a political event that the state displayed a model of private spaces in public, and thereby attempting to induce people to behave productively in their home. As time passes, the number of survivors from major world tragedies like the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki grows fewer and fewer. These survivors are a powerful resource for educating students of all ages about the importance of world peace. Drawing on the writing of Richard Moody and Frans Doppen, as well as Paul Ham, and Herbert Feis respectively, I outline the important role of hibakusha, or a-bomb survivors, in peace education at the secondary and collegiate levels. 馬其昶(1855-1930)，字通白(又作通伯)，晚年號抱潤翁，安徽桐城人，清末民初著名學者。早年以古文名，晚歲殫治群經子史，旁及內典，有桐城派「殿軍」之稱。其著《毛詩學》因晚清經學衰微，加之珠玉在前，以往較少學者研究，然不失為一部《毛詩》學的總成之作。本文以此書作為研究對象，內容計有以下數端：一、通伯著書或有異名，或有異卷。本文先考《毛詩學》版本，繼而剖析體例，簡介成書背景及撰寫架構。二、歷來《詩》說紛紜，馬氏既以《毛詩》為宗，其於《詩經》學的重要問題必有傾向。本文擇取並析述書中部分觀點，窺探通伯對於《詩經》學部分問題的基本立場。三、陳漢章(1864-1938)謂「蓋此書出而經學可息爭矣」，此書實有功於《毛詩》學。筆者先比較《毛詩學》與清代《詩經》新疏三大家之撰述理念，從而了解《毛詩學》對同朝《毛詩》學派的繼承和相異之處。次而略舉《毛詩學》說詩條例，尤重比對此書與清代新疏之說法，考察此書釋《詩》具體方式和特點，並從徵引、釋詞、辨音、明句，以至撰述理念等角度，評述其按語獨到、可取，或誤解之處。四、由其書至其人，延伸馬氏著成此書的學術淵源。試從《毛詩學》具體思想傾向與特點，推論背後形成因素，論及此書與桐城派學術觀之關係。

Academic freedom is the ability to explore, research, and analyze any topic without prohibitions or repercussions. In the Anglo-American tradition, it is both a fundamental aspect of academia and, as this thesis argues, a fundamental human right. Although the United States embraces this core principle of academia within American universities, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) seeks to suppress the acquisition of knowledge through restrictions on topics deemed politically-sensitive to the Chinese government. Although human rights abuses pervade the PRC and academic freedom is suppressed, PRC-funded entities known as Confucius Institutes (CIs) are widely embraced at universities in liberal democracies. …

This study tests the salience/prominence of Chinese ethnic identity by applying identity theory, social identity theory, and social network analysis. Using survey data of Chinese graduate students in two universities in the United States, I show how Chinese ethnic identity salience varies with the percentage of Chinese in an individual’s ego network revolving around him or her. In addition, among newcomers to the United States, as the percentage Chinese in ego networks increases, the decline of Chinese identity salience/prominence declines, but for old timers in the United States, as the percentage Chinese increases, the decline of Chinese identity salience/prominence is …

During the early twentieth century, Japan was modernizing in all areas of science and art, including children’s literature. Ogawa Mimei (1882-1961) was a prolific writer who advanced various literary forms such as short stories, poems, essays, children’s stories, and children’s songs. As a writer, he was most active during the late Meiji (1868-1912) to Taishō (1912-1926) periods when he was a socialist. The secularization thesis, rooted in the idea that “modernity” brings with it the destruction—or, at least, the ruthless privatization—of religion, is clearly grounded in specific, often oversimplified, interpretations of Western historical developments since the eighteenth century. In this article, I use the case of the New Buddhist Fellowship (Shin Bukkyō Dōshikai 新仏教同志会) of the Meiji period (1868–1911) to query the category of the secular in the context of Japanese modernity. I argue that the New Buddhists, drawing on elements of classical and East Asian Buddhism as well as modern Western thought, promoted a resolutely social and this-worldly Buddhism that …

This is the full-paper version of the 338th Si-Mian Lecture delivered at ECNU on March 17, 2017, which focuses on the "shameless" act of intellectual collaboration committed by Ch'oe Chaes ô (崔載瑞), an eminent scholar of English literature and criticism as well as a prominent "pro-Japanese" intellectual in Colonial Korea, who encouraged Korean writers to contribute to Japanese "kokumin bungaku" [national literature] by writing in the Japanese language.
