The archival text Dictée by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha spans many genres, making it a highly hybrid text. Cha uses personal letters, official government documents, images, prose, dictation exercises, translations, and poetry to create a composite identity of women neglected through history. Dictée’s hybrid form allows it to experiment with the lyric and epic traditions, challenging their forms to adequately reflect the lived experience of oppressed women. Some of those stories include John M. Though she is principally known for her works on China, some scholars, while acknowledging that her novels were principally for an American female audience, gave little attention to her significant body of non-fictional works on a variety of subjects on America and East Asia. Analyzing examples from the Decameron (1349-51), De mulieribus claris (1361), and the Corbaccio (1365), I argue that Boccaccio (1313-75) demonstrates an awareness of theological, legal and medical opinions on abortion and contraception at the time. However, he is more attuned to the practical concerns of pregnancy than are many of his contemporaries. Acknowledging the variety of situations facing pregnant people and some parts of their lived experience that were ignored by many religious and legal authorities, Boccaccio highlights a disconnection between theory and practice, and thereby raises questions about the limits of abstract knowledge in the face of practical concerns.

My thesis has two primary goals. First, it provides an overview of the history of manga as a medium, and manga studies as a field. In doing so, I observe a lack of terminological and methodological specificity. As a result, I provide a formalist approach to thematic criticism in order to address the above issues. Second, my thesis primarily centers on shōnen power systems and their narrative functions. Power systems are "magic rules" that determine how superhuman abilities mechanically function. I identify two main power systems in shōnen manga: spiritual manipulation and transformations. My thesis posits that shōnen manga authors …

Rich oral language practices, including the opportunity and ability to participate in cognitively and linguistically challenging extended discourse, are foundational to early literacy development. To meet children’s needs in their first exposure to the languages of schooling, educators may engage students in extended discourse multilingually. The current study focuses on student-centered translanguaging conversations to examine strategies that preschool teachers employ to support young children’s emerging bilingual and biliteracy development in a Mandarin immersion preschool serving primarily nonheritage learners of Mandarin in the United States. The visual images in Dictee are famously captionless. They resist straightforward explanation. In writing image descriptions of the images in Dictee, I have tried to preserve the "captionlessness" of the original. The point here is not to explain the pictures—an image description is not identical to a caption—but to make Dictee more accessible to readers who are blind and visually impaired. I realize, of course, that in trying to make Dictee's captionless images more "legible," I have inevitably "mistranslated" Dictee as it was originally designed to be experienced. งานวิจัยนี้ศึกษาการตั้งชื่อท่าไม้ตายที่พบในหนังสือการ์ตูนหรือมังงะทั้งในฉบับภาษาญี่ปุ่นและฉบับแปลภาษาไทยว่ามีขนบการตั้งชื่ออย่างไร และเมื่อแปลเป็นภาษาไทยแล้วจะมีการใช้ขนบหรือมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างไรบ้าง ผู้วิจัยรวบรวมกับศึกษาท่าไม้ตายในมังงะภาษาญี่ปุ่นจำนวน 16 เรื่อง และศึกษาฉบับแปลภาษาไทยจำนวน 10 เรื่อง รวมทั้งหมด 1,435 ท่าในฉบับภาษาญี่ปุ่น และ 636 ท่าในฉบับภาษาไทย และได้ทำการวิเคราะห์ประเด็นหลักทั้งสองภาษาโดยรวมจำนวน 8 ประเด็นได้แก่ 1) จำนวนคำ 2) วลีชื่อเฉพาะ 3) หน่วยเสียงพยางค์ 4) รูปเขียนตัวอักษร 5) ตัวอักษรรูบิ (ルビ) 6) ภาพพื้นหลังกับเครื่องหมาย 7) การใช้ภาษาบาลี - สันสกฤตในชื่อภาษาไทย 8) กลวิธีการแปลชื่อท่าไม้ตาย นอกจากนี้ผู้วิจัยศึกษาว่าขนบการตั้งชื่อท่าไม้ตายมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงตามกาลเวลาหรือไม่ด้วย ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 1) จำนวนคำในท่าไม้ตายภาษาญี่ปุ่นจะนิยมการใช้ 2 คำ เพื่อความกระชับ ในขณะที่ชื่อภาษาไทยจะมีการใช้จำนวนคำที่ยาวกว่า 2) วลีชื่อเฉพาะในท่าไม้ตายภาษาญี่ปุ่นนิยมใช้คำนามกับคำนาม ในขณะที่ภาษาไทยนิยมใช้คำกริยากับคำนามมากกว่าเพื่อขายความให้คนไทยเข้าใจ 3) หน่วยเสียงพยางค์ของทั้งสองภาษานิยมการใช้ 10 พยางค์ขึ้นไป แต่ฉบับภาษาไทยจะนิยมการใช้ 5-6 พยางค์ในแต่ละเรื่องมากกว่า 4) ชื่อท่าไม้ตายภาษาญี่ปุ่นนิยมตัวอักษรคันจิมากที่สุด รองลงมาคือคาตากานะและฮิรางานะกับคันจิ 5) ตัวอักษรรูบินิยมการใช้ตัวอักษรฮิรางานะเพื่อบอกวิธีอ่านทั่วไปมากกว่า 6) ภาพพื้นหลังกับเครื่องหมายมีความสัมพันธ์กับชื่อท่าไม้ตาย และการใช้เครื่องหมายก็มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงตามกาลเวลาด้วย 7) ภาษาบาลี-สันสกฤตพบการนิยมใช้ในชื่อของท่าไม้ตายฉบับแปล และการเลือกใช้จะขึ้นกับรูปแบบการแปลของผู้แปลแต่ละคนหรือสำนักพิมพ์นั้นๆ 8) กลวิธีการแปลนิยมการแปลแบบตรงตัวมากที่สุด นอกจากนี้ยังพบการแปลที่สร้างคำศัพท์ใหม่โดยอิงจากภาพพื้นหลังหรือบริบทของเนื้อเรื่องด้วย 9) ท่าไม้ตายในช่วงยุคค.ศ. 1980 จะเน้นรูปภาพที่แสดงถึงการตะโกนเสียงดังมากกว่า และท่าไม้ตายที่มีขนาดสั้น อย่างไรก็ตามท่าไม้ตายในยุคค.ศ. 2000 นั้นนิยมการใช้คำบรรยายมากกว่า และชื่อท่าไม้ตายมีความยาวมากขึ้นด้วย

This paper presents the results of a psychodiagnostic case study of Nobel laureate Pearl Buck, 1938 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature “for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces.” Guided by the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon, psychodiagnostically relevant data about Buck were collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC). State charter school policy is influenced through a collaboration between advocacy groups and state legislators. Charter school advocacy groups have an inherent bias toward deregulation and autonomy. Two advocacy groups, the Center for Education Reform (CER) and the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools (NAPCS), each conduct annual analyses on state charter school laws using their own model charter law as the comparator. Each group has developed a rubric of indicators with sub-scores which combine to form an overall state score. Higher scores indicate a closer adherence to the advocacy group’s model charter law. This chapter analyzes the postcolonial discourse in Italy, through the voice of the novelist and playwright Enrico Pea (1881–1958). Living outside of Italy, Pea gained a unique awareness of the notion of multi-ethnic societies, of the concepts of nationality, borders, and boundaries. Alexandria, Egypt, is Pea’s referential space. It is a center, and at the same time, a marginal place. Alexandrea ad Egyptum, that is, the door to Egypt, as it was known in antiquity, this city brought together Arab and European artistic experiences that converged on, and were triggered by, its multicultural profile. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาภาษากะเทย (おネエことば) ที่ปรากฏในสื่อหนังสือการ์ตูนญี่ปุ่นหรือ “มังงะ” และรวบรวมทำเป็นฐานข้อมูล ผู้วิจัยศึกษาภาษากะเทยจากมังงะที่มีตัวละครกะเทยปรากฏและพูดด้วยภาษากะเทยจำนวน 48 ตัวละคร รวมจำนวนประโยคตัวอย่างทั้งหมด 886 ตัวอย่าง มาทำการวิเคราะห์การแสดงอัตลักษณ์โดยวิเคราะห์ใน 4 ประเด็นดังนี้ 1) การใช้สรรพนามของตัวละคร 2) ส่วนลงท้ายประโยค 3) คำไพเราะ (美化語) 4) คำศัพท์ที่แสดงความเป็นภาษากะเทย และเสริมประเด็นการวิเคราะห์อื่นที่ตัวผู้วิจัยสนใจอีก 2 ประเด็นได้แก่ 1) การใช้สัญลักษณ์ เครื่องหมายวรรคตอน และอีโมจิ 2) รูปเขียนฮิรางานะ คาตากานะ และคันจิ นอกจากนี้ก็ยังสอดแทรกการเปรียบเทียบความแตกต่างของการแสดงอัตลักษณ์โดยแยกประเภทมังงะตามกลุ่มผู้อ่านของเรื่องผลการวิจัยพบว่า โดยภาพรวมภาษากะเทยในภาษาญี่ปุ่นเป็นภาษาที่ใช้ภาษาผู้หญิงเป็นพื้นฐานแล้วเพิ่มเติมลักษณะพิเศษบางอย่างลงไปทำให้เกิดความแตกต่างจากภาษาผู้หญิงทั่วไป การแสดงอัตลักษณ์มีความโน้มเอียงไปทางภาษาผู้หญิงเป็นส่วนใหญ่ จึงนำเสนอความเป็นผู้หญิงผ่านสรรพนาม ส่วนลงท้ายประโยค คำไพเราะ คำศัพท์ การใช้สัญลักษณ์ เครื่องหมายวรรคตอนและอีโมจิ อย่างไรก็ตามก็มีการแฝงความแข็งกร้าวโน้มเอียงไปทางผู้ชายในรูปแบบภาษาเหล่านี้ด้วย ทั้งนี้ ในกรณีรูปเขียนค้นพบว่ามีความโน้มเอียงไปทางผู้ชายผ่านการใช้คาตากานะและคันจิ ทำให้ภาษากะเทยมีลักษณะการแสดงอัตลักษณ์ที่อยู่กึ่งกลางระหว่างสองเพศ สำหรับการศึกษาความแตกต่างแยกตามกลุ่มผู้อ่านของเรื่องพบว่าภาษากะเทยในมังงะเด็กผู้ชายและมังงะเด็กผู้หญิงไม่ค่อยมีความแตกต่างกัน ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นถึงการแสดงอัตลักษณ์ของภาษากะเทยที่มีแบบแผนที่ชัดเจน ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามเพศของผู้อ่าน
