This study discusses Louis Jean Marie Feber’s (1885–1964) colonial views on Islam as written in In de schaduw der waringins (1922), focusing on the sub-chapter ‘De Mislukte Mekkagang’ as the main corpus. L.J.M. Feber was an engineer and the founder of the Catholic Party in the Dutch East Indies. Feber visited the Dutch East Indies in 1909 and worked in Java until 1920. He wrote In de schaduw der waringins (1922) based on his observations and experiences whilst in Java. Feber’s views on Islam on Java differed from previous Dutch missionaries. Onrust Island is one of the islands in Kepulauan Seribu and served as a quarantine facility for Hajj pilgrims in the early 20th century. This study examines the conflict between Islamic norms regarding the practice of Hajj (the mahram and muhrim principle) and gender-neutral colonial health policies towards female Hajj pilgrims in quarantine on Onrust Island in 1912. The primary data used consists of Dutch colonial government reports from the archive Vervoer van personen en goederen over zee. Penelitian ini mengkaji representasi kehidupan sosial remaja queer dalam film tersebut dan relevansinya dengan realitas sosial remaja queer di Belanda, menggunakan teori representasi Stuart Hall dengan pendekatan konstruksionis serta konsep congruence Carl Rogers, melalui metode deskriptif kualitatif. The dissolution of the Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger (KNIL) following the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty created serious problems for KNIL soldiers from Ambon, particularly with regard to their legal status, security, and place of demobilization. The unstable political and security situation in Eastern Indonesia in the early 1950s, combined with tensions between the Netherlands and the Republik Indonesia Serikat, further intensified the uncertainty surrounding the fate of former Ambonese KNIL soldiers. The current study investigates the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu (G 22). The study focuses on two objectives: the first objective is to describe the plant folk taxonomy in Chasu and the second objective is to determine the relationship between noun classes and plant folk taxonomy in Chasu. Data were collected from rural villages in Same and Mwanga districts by using free listing, field interviews (jungle-walk-and-identify), and written texts containing Chasu plant names. This study analyzes the occurrence of taboo expressions and their translation strategies into Dutch in the movie The Big 4. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The analysis in this study uses theories related to the category of taboo expressions from Wardhaugh (2006) and Allan & Burridge (2006), then the theory of translation strategies of taboo expressions from Davoodi (2009). The objective of this research is to analyze and describe the roles of visual and verbal elements in STIVORO’s campaigns in conveying anti-smoking messages to the Dutch public. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach and applies the theory of multimodality developed by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006). The Middle Dutch sister-books and The Book of Margery Kempe are fifteenth-century vernacular texts by women chronicling their female subjects’ conversion and arduous attempts at a holy life. Mapping Colonial Interdependencies In Dutch Brazil: European Linen & Brasilianen Identity, Carrie Anderson

In Dutch Brazil, the Brasilianen were essential allies to the West India Company. To maintain this critical alliance, the Dutch presented them with gifts of linen, a fabric in high demand. Representations of Brasilianen wearing linen garments were pervasive and include an image on Joan Blaeu’s 1647 map of the Brazilian Captaincies of Rio Grande and Paraíba. Traditional interpretations of these linen-clad Brasilianen prioritize a center/periphery model; in contrast, I argue that these pictured linens document the interdependencies between the WIC and the Brasilianen, a position supported by digital maps plotting Dutch/indigenous exchanges.

Network visualizations have the potential to translate messy archival work into clouds of connection, powerful maps of relations that can reveal hidden agents or nodes of production. But network visualizations must also be understood as artifacts of our own visual culture, laden with the biases and limits of both past and present knowledge systems. Rather than seeing networks as uniform webs of connection, social network analysis must productively interrogate how biopolitical, cultural and social power are manifested within these visualizations, reinforcing the biases and lacunae of the archive.

The Dutch landscape is an authored landscape documenting human reaction to geological, economic, and cultural changes. As a consequence of Dutch globalization, landscape painting arose as a new form of painting, documenting these changes and reactions to them. In his article "Conscience's De Leeuw van Vlaanderen (The Lion of Flanders) and Its Adaptation to Film by Claus" Gertjan Willems discusses Hugo Claus's 1984 filmic adaptation of Hendrik Conscience's 1838 historical novel, a landmark in the history of the Flemish Movement. Willems's analysis is executed by means of a textual film analysis and archival research. Willems pays special attention to the Flemish-Dutch coproduction's complex relations with the national question.
