This study discusses Louis Jean Marie Feber’s (1885–1964) colonial views on Islam as written in In de schaduw der waringins (1922), focusing on the sub-chapter ‘De Mislukte Mekkagang’ as the main corpus. L.J.M. Feber was an engineer and the founder of the Catholic Party in the Dutch East Indies. Feber visited the Dutch East Indies in 1909 and worked in Java until 1920. He wrote In de schaduw der waringins (1922) based on his observations and experiences whilst in Java. Feber’s views on Islam on Java differed from previous Dutch missionaries. Onrust Island is one of the islands in Kepulauan Seribu and served as a quarantine facility for Hajj pilgrims in the early 20th century. This study examines the conflict between Islamic norms regarding the practice of Hajj (the mahram and muhrim principle) and gender-neutral colonial health policies towards female Hajj pilgrims in quarantine on Onrust Island in 1912. The primary data used consists of Dutch colonial government reports from the archive Vervoer van personen en goederen over zee. Belanda dikenal relatif terbuka terhadap homoseksualitas, kondisi yang tercermin dalam film Out (2024) karya Dennis Alink tentang dua remaja queer, Ajani dan Tom, yang menjalani kehidupan baru di Amsterdam. Penelitian ini mengkaji representasi kehidupan sosial remaja queer dalam film tersebut dan relevansinya dengan realitas sosial remaja queer di Belanda, menggunakan teori representasi Stuart Hall dengan pendekatan konstruksionis serta konsep congruence Carl Rogers, melalui metode deskriptif kualitatif. Animated films convey stories through visuals, music, and song lyrics, all of which play an essential role in constructing meaning and evoking emotion. The Dutch-language soundtrack of Moana 2 employs nature-related metaphors to depict the characters' journeys, inner conflicts, and the relationship between humans and nature. This study aims to identify the types of metaphors, based on Rozemarijn van Leeuwen’s (2002) classification, found in the song lyrics “Terug,” “Verder Gaan,” “Wordt het nog beter dan dit?,” “Hoor ik daar een chee hoo?,” and “Ga Los,” which were obtained from the official Genius website. The dissolution of the Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger (KNIL) following the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty created serious problems for KNIL soldiers from Ambon, particularly with regard to their legal status, security, and place of demobilization. The unstable political and security situation in Eastern Indonesia in the early 1950s, combined with tensions between the Netherlands and the Republik Indonesia Serikat, further intensified the uncertainty surrounding the fate of former Ambonese KNIL soldiers. Snouck Hurgronje was an Orientalist who had a different view from the colonial government regarding Indonesian independence. Snouck Hurgronje was always outspoken about the situation and dared to take action. This study discusses the views of Dutch and Flemish newspapers, namely Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant, Algemeen Handelsblad, and De Standaard, in their December 7 and 8, 1928 editions, regarding Snouck Hurgronje's criticism of Koloniale Vraagstukken Van Heden En Morgen (1928) by Hendrikus Colijn, an anti-revolutionary official. This study analyzes the occurrence of taboo expressions and their translation strategies into Dutch in the movie The Big 4. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The analysis in this study uses theories related to the category of taboo expressions from Wardhaugh (2006) and Allan & Burridge (2006), then the theory of translation strategies of taboo expressions from Davoodi (2009). The results show that the categories of taboo expressions that appear the most from 129 data found in The Big 4 movie are animal names (45.7%), body parts (16.3%), sex (10.9%), mental abnormality (9.3%), death …

This study examines the use of straattaal vocabulary in the television series De Tatta’s (2024), along with language attitudes and linguistic accommodation among youth in the Randstad region of the Netherlands. Straattaal is a form of street language that has developed within the Netherlands’ multicultural urban environments and is primarily used by young people as a means of social expression and identity. This study examines the multimodal elements in the campaigns of STIVORO (Stichting Volksgezondheid en Roken), the Netherlands' first national organization dedicated specifically to tobacco control. The objective of this research is to analyze and describe the roles of visual and verbal elements in STIVORO’s campaigns in conveying anti-smoking messages to the Dutch public. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach and applies the theory of multimodality developed by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006).
