I am interested that the Association for Documentary Editing would have a panel on the solo editor, because since reading Don Higginbotham's piece in the March issue of the ADE Newsletter the idea of the solo editor as a particular species of the genus of historical editor has intrigued me. As the single, sole, solo editor of the Papers of David Hartley, and as the associate editor of The Papers . of Philip Mazzei, I am presently both a solo editor and a team editor. Documentary editing has achieved unprecedented importance in American historical scholarship since the publication in 1950 of the first volume of Julian P. Boyd's edition of The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. Thanks to the support of state and federal government, foundations, and universities and to the labors of a generation of editors, scores of letterpress and microfilm editions have been completed or are in progress. These editions are noteworthy for their comprehensiveness and high standards of scholarship as well as for their cost. Donor Establishes Award To Honor Boyd

The Association for Documentary Editing recently received $500 to establish the Julian P. Boyd Award . This is intended to serve as a memorial to Boyd that will reflect both the breadth of his interests and his concern for excellence. The award will be given every three years to honor a distinguished contribution to knowledge of American history and culture. The donor, who prefers to be anonymous, intends to make further contributions to the award fund but not necessarily to support it single-handedly.

The nature of the editor's task frequently forces her to acquire greater knowledge of book production than the normal author, who gladly relinquishes technical worries to the publisher's staff. Necessity is frequently the chief motivating factor and osmosis the method in the editor's acquisition of this esoteric knowledge. Not surprisingly, given the financial resources involved, editors in the commercial sector have been quicker to adopt the latest technology to their tasks than have editors in the low-budget, subsidized, money-losing academic sector. Mazzei Honored By Italy And U.S.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The year 1980 marks the two-hundred-fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Philip Mazzei (1730-1816), the forgotten patriot who emigrated to Virginia in 1773 and joined Jefferson, Henry, and other colonial patriots in the growing independence movement. A United States Airmail Stamp commemorating the anniversary will be issued on 13 October, in Washington, D.C. The stamp has the same design as an Italian stamp to be issued at Poggio a Caiano, Italy, Mazzei's birthplace.

I'd like to offer two preliminary comments about the general topic of this session, the "perfect" text, and another about the aspect of that topic which I've been asked to discuss. On the general topic, our presentations may - indeed should - overlap; no aspect of textual scholarship, theoretical or practical, can be sensibly isolated from the others. Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Book reviews in many ways are more important for the documentary publication than the monograph. In the latter case the book is published, reviewed, and in a sense forgotten. Multiple volume documentary editions, published over a long period, should receive and, indeed, require constant review, each new volume being compared with the preceding ones. The importance of reviews is no less for smaller selective editions of only a few volumes or on microforms. For the documentary edition, much more a reference book than the monograph, reviews should inform potential users of its utility and help to maintain quality.

Mellon Foundation Makes Large Editing Grant

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York City has granted $425,000 to the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in support of historical editing projects of five Founding Fathers: John Adams (and his family), Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington. The grant is intended to give the editors and sponsoring institutions a three-year period in which to develop other bases of financial support, as funds from federal grant-making agencies, such as the NHPRC are not expected to keep pace with rising editorial and production costs. Freeman III, took office after a distinguished operational and administrative career in the Navy, including a recent "college presidency" as commandant of the Defense Systems Management College at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He has assembled the facts of life concerning NARS with the aid of detailed memoranda from the acting archivist, who has unobtrusively injected between the lines some much-needed advice.
