Within the past several years, best-seller lists have witnessed a growth in popularity of memoirs or creative non-fiction writing. Being an avid bookstore wanderer, I noticed this influx and wondered about the reasons behind it. What is so appealing about this genre to readers, and why do people write these kinds of books? What sort of mental processes within the author’s mind are expressed on the page, and how do those processes reflect or interact with the reader? Is it all merely cathartic writing/reading? Although working class issues are not invisible in academia, it seems less common to hear them from the members of the working class themselves. There are many scholars who speak for them, but not exactly with them. This project allows five blue collar employees of the Holiday Inn located inLiverpool,NY to speak for themselves about the work they do and the union in which they participate. Liverpool’s Holiday Inn is the only union hotel in theSyracuse area, so this project also explores what it means to have unions in the hotel industry. Nexus Literary Journal
Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.
