Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Eco-feminism, cultural study and the environment coalesce in the form of poetic cultural commentary, originally fieldnotes. I draw exclusively from my years in the Alaskan Arctic among the Iñupiat Eskimo, who call themselves "the People of the Whale." The striking and severe natural environment, a landscape of endless ice, is central to the poetry, which richly portrays a vision of the Arctic absent from tourist travel guides, National Geographic and anthropological volumes. These magazines vend the Far North's beautiful austerity, including at times the physical beauty of its animal inhabitants, including humans, while disregarding human specificity and violence …

Dream Driving, Don Russ
Dream Driving, Don Russ
KSU Press Legacy Project
In Don Russ's collection of poetry, Dream Driving, life is a journey. It has dream-like stages, apparitions, visions, and revelations. The journey itself is in some ways a dream, a sleep-wandering among the labyrinths of the mind, of the imagined world, of even the "real" world. What can we finally know for sure? Do we not at least partly create what we see in the act of seeing it?
Section I includes the poems:
- Here
- In the Driveway
- At the End of the Woods
- Fauns
- Metamorphosis
- Easter Biddies
- Walk on Water
- A Little Visit

Fractures, Elizabeth Hastings
Fractures, Elizabeth Hastings
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A stoplight at night. A dim bedroom. The smell of smoke and loss in summer. In winter, the crackle of snow underfoot, the city cold as a lavender planet. These are the settings within Fractures, and it is to these backdrops that the conflicts of the poems' speakers bare themselves. In the glow of these places, the truth of fractures, the gaps and slivers within us all, are illuminated. Below the visible wholeness of life lies a masked truth, the truth of a world that exists as a collection of fragments, of lives, of stories that connect, intersect, and sometimes …

Neck Of The World, Daniel F. Rzicznek
Swenson Poetry Award Winners
May Swenson Poetry Award Volume 11, with foreward by Alice Quinn. Neck of the World is the eleventh volume in the prestigious May Swenson Poetry Award series. In it, Daniel Rzicznek offers poems that, in quick angular language, capture the natural world and at the same time extend it into a surreal vision, sometimes dream-like, sometimes dark. Alice Quinn, judge for the 2007 Swenson Award, says this of Rzicznek's work: "Throughout, the language pulsates, always vigorous, by turns knotty and crystalline. . . . In Neck of the World, we have a poet with a striking new vision--challenging, rewarding, and …

The Fine Art Of Monsters In Literature, Charles Garvin
The Fine Art Of Monsters In Literature, Charles Garvin
Theses
This thesis will focus on the assimilation of my life experiences that ultimately result in the creation literary monsters. The following introduction defines my development as a writer through explorations of poetry and fiction. Traumatic life experiences as both a child and as an adult, coupled with an excellent education, has augmented my writing style towards literary horror.
A section of poetry comes after the introduction, which is a serious experiment by me to delve into the finer arts of pattern making. The fictional piece, Beyond Road's End, which follows the poetry, is primarily the object of my focus, which …

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
For an author who likes to cross borders Guillermo Gómez-Peña (1955) has certainly reached audiences in both the U.S. and Mexican artistic, literary, theoretical, and political arenas. Now, with the advent of more technological mediums such as the Internet, the borderless artist makes use of the global fetish that, in theory, reaches a global community. As a prelude to his performances, workshops, conferences and lectures, Gómez-Peña’s collaborative webiste engages his readers in video-poetic selections, and hypertext poetic medley with topics that are sure to catch their interest with poems such as "Apocalypse," "Sexo," "Militias," and the video-poems "Apocalypse" and "Califas." …
