Reigniting Identity: Rediscovering My Teaching, Lifelong Learning, And Myself, Rachel Griffith

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

A culmination of two years of work and self-discovery represented through three different types of writing, two academic and one creative. The academic works explore communication and autism in the English classroom, as well as teaching technical writing in practice ways. The creative work is a poetry portfolio that is one of the author's proudest works from their degree track, covering a variety of topics from love to nostalgia to inner turmoil. Together, they narrate three reasons why the author writes, teaches, and lives.

Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

The search for knowledge across languages and languages beyond knowledge leads to questions of completeness, control, and understanding. One of these poems was written in response to an omnipoetics class, where the problems and promise of anthologizing across time, languages, and cultures took center stage. Another poem came from the experience of co-teaching a translation group. The third was born from a paired writing relationship; poetic language for communication is always a leap of trust. Together, these poems reflect the lived experiences of the author; a multilingual poet who studies multilingual poets.

The Agora

An entry from a collection of short poems written over the summer of 2023. This collection recalls the island of Ireland: the history, the nature, the people, from an outsider’s perspective. Written on location across the varied landscapes of the emerald isle, this collection centers the melancholy of travel, and the resiliance of the Irish people. The titular poem recalls the Lyreen River, which runs through the town of Maynooth.

Remain is an interdisciplinary poetry project by L. Renee, the West Virginia University Libraries' 2.02.6 Mountain Artist in Resident. Developed in collaboration with the West Virginia & Regional History Center (WVRHC), this exhibit serves as a poetic activation of archival records concerning mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia. The title of this collection, Totality: An Eclipse, and the titles of each of its three sections (“First Contact,” “Second Contact,” and “Third Contact”) combine to help illustrate my experience with grief as a solar eclipse: totality is the maximum phase of a total solar eclipse; first contact is when the sun just begins to disappear in the sky; second contact is when there is complete darkness in the sky; and third contact is when daylight finally returns. Honors Projects

Poetry collection and reflective essay that consists of a traumatic event (sexual assault) and shows the healing journey. The emphasized themes are resiliency, processing, and community-building. Healing is not linear, nor is it always beautiful. The reflective essay explains the academic and theoretical context that the collection is built on. From the invisible frameworks of patriarchy and gender roles to Audre Lorde, whose rhetoric served as an incredible inspiration to this project. The poetry collection sits at an intersection of the writers academic, professional, and creative work, with additional inspiration being derived from her volunteer work with sexual assault survivors.
